20 rebounds??? Yes please.

Naquan Tomlin is also 6"9 and rated the #3 JUCO recruit. Would love to get a package deal.

I thought that too and looked him up and I would say that's a low likelihood of happening lol

I like the addition of Fields to the team. He has decent size at 6'-9" and seems to be pretty athletic. Wish he was about 25 pounds heavier (muscle), but I imagine he will put on some weight in the weight room at ODU. It will be interesting to see if these two junior college guys both end up being regular contributors this season.

I liked Fields' size in his CC video and with 4 years to develop, he could be a solid player.

I don't know. Listed as 6-9...might be an inch too short to play in center. But what if he's really 6-8 and has to play small forward?

100% agree. hopefully these JC guys really translate to the next level and stay committed to the program as well.

Some of ODU's best ever centers were 6'-9". Two of them have had their jersey retired.

Wilson Washington
Odell Hodge
Alex Laughton

I think there was some sarcasm in the preceding statement about being an inch or two short. Apparently size matters. but in basketball the difference between 6'9" and 6'10" meh

Odell Hodge lacked a neck - - which is a good thing in a basketball center.

Trey Porter (as one example) was a legitimate 6'10", but at least 3-4 inches of that was his impressive neck. The neck and head of course have no role in above-the-rim play, since arms extend from the shoulders.

I would venture to stay that, if we measure from the shoulders, Odell Hodge was among the very tallest of our centers.

Unless you start using your head to block shots, wingspan is way more important.

Generally speaking, the taller a person is, the longer their arms tend to be. Also, their shoulders are higher above the floor than a shorter person's shoulders are which gives them am advantage when reaching up to block shots or rebounding.

So, one slot left. What kind of player you think we bring in next? Another big or the best player we can get regardless of position?

I think we're in "best player left on the board" mode. Hasn't Jones kept a scholly on hand sometimes just incase someone falls into our lap? I think that's happened before.

He has, but the program cannot afford that right now. We need all hands (and scholarships) on deck.

Granted, I don't want to use a scholarship just for the sake of using it. It's time for the staff to show that they can recruit championship quality talent. So far, no dice.

Speaking of two Juco’s coming, we have so many new players now I’m having trouble keeping up! Can someone compile a list of the new guys?

New Guys:

Grayson
Jenkins
Baker
Williams
Stanley
Fields

If it were me, I would look to add in another point guard. The ideal one would probably be one that fits the system, aka good defender that can knock down mid range shots.

I think we see Essien as the primary ball handler right now. Grayson will probably do a lot of that as well.

Jenkins/Stines/Johnson/Smith on the wings with Baker as developmental wing (I have no idea if he's going to play as a freshman)

I think Long and Stanley will primarily be the 4 guy with Long occasionally sliding to the 3 and Stanley occasionally playing the small ball 5.

Williams and Fields being the primary post players.

The team will be a different type of team than in the past. I don't think our bigs are anywhere close to Kalu/Trice in terms of general post play. Those guys could create on their own, I'm not sure how much the new guys can do. Stanley is probably the best of the group at that and he can also play outside of the paint.

This team is way more athletic than teams in the past, hopefully that translates defensively.

We are going to need Stines/Johnson/Grayson/Smith to provide outside shooting. I think Johnson and Stines have talent but its still questionable if they are ready to play right now.

Im also not sure Essien is ready to play 30 minutes a game as PG.

It will be interesting to see the lineups we go with. There is more flexibility in the lineup than we have had in the past. I'd be curious to see how we fit in Long/Stanley and the bigs. If we go with Long at the 3, shooting will always be an issue. If its Essien/(wing)/Long, we won't be able to shoot a lick.

Unless we have a couple players on the wings step up into double digit scores (Grayson likely will), I'm not sure what our ceiling is. The first order of business should be to fix the defense though.
