RE: Rockets in the NFL/CFL/AFL: 2021
NFL Pre-season starts tonight with the Steelers & Cowboys playing in the Hall of Fame Game. Don't expect Johnson will play very much.

Yep, and here's another article maybe finally coming around to the fact that Woodside keeps beating out all these supposedly supposedly superior QBs. Although, it still makes a few snide remarks about him.

I enjoyed that article, thanks. I think those snide remarks (average QB, average background) were meant tongue in cheek and a bit self deprecating on the writer's part.
Quote:but I do think it’s probably time that we stop trying to write off the Titans current QB2 every time a new passer is brought into the fold (I’m not pointing fingers, I’ve been guilty of it as well).

Woodside showed some leadership organziing those throwing sessions. Always good to have the receivers on your side!

Meet Jon’Vea Johnson. The Bears’ Emerging Training Camp Hero

https://www.sportsmockery.com/chicago-be...camp-hero/

Twitter has a bit of a buzz as apparently he and Justin Fields have been clicking in camp. Of course, a similar thing happened when he was in camp in Dallas, and then he had a number of drops in pre-season, and then a shoulder injury. Hopefully he can make it this time.

Blade this morning said the Titans released DeShone Kizer on Thursday. That really improves Woodside's chance at being the #2 in Tennessee.

But they brought in another guy.

They keep signing other QBs and Woodside keeps beating them out. Hopefully he will do it again.

2019 they cut Austin Davis and Blaine Gabbert before having room to sign Woodside
2019 Woodside made the practice squad, but ended up injured.
2020 they drafted Cole McDonald and the scuttlebutt was that he was so much more talented then Woodside, and they wouldn't waste a draft pick on a QB if they didn't expect to keep him. Woodside beat him out.
2020 then they brought in former NFL starter Trevor Siemian and everyone said Woodside's NFL career was over as there is no way he could compete with him. Woodside ended up on the roster, and Siemian on the practice squad. Beat him too.
2020 Siemian got signed away by NO, so they brought in Kizer, and again all the talk was about how he is soooo much more talented than Woodside - I mean he played at Notre Dame for gosh sake. Woodside stayed on the roster and Kizer became the "covid emergency QB".
2021 they brought back Kizer in the off season, and everyone was all, well last season was an anomaly, and Kizer is a shoe-in to beat out Woodside this year, 'cause, well 'cause he went to freakin' Notre Dame. Kizer gets cut.
2021 Former NFL starter Matt Barkley is the latest competition. People again saying this is for certain, no fooling, the end of the road for Woodside.

Now interestingly Barkley was in camp at Cinci when Woodside was drafted there, but got injured in pre-season. Woodside was cut later, so Barkley didn't beat him out then either, and Woodside is reportedly a much better QB now than he was then. Barkley has a career QB rating of 66. That's pretty darn bad. 11 TDs to 22 INTs. Hard to see how he would be an upgrade, especially with a higher veterans salary. Don't know what will happen but I would not write Woodside off yet.

WR Jon'vea Johnson making push for roster spot

(See item #4).

Also, I didn't realize Rodney Adams was trying to get back in the NFL, after he had retired a couple years ago. So, another Rocket trying to find a spot.

3 games and 2 receptions at Toledo, then 3 years at USF
not really too much of a Rocket.

Well, if we make those kinds of judgements, maybe Emlen Tunnell wasn't much of a Rocket either, but we have no trouble claiming him. Adams left UT to go back south after his mother died, so he could be closer to his family. Didn't leave because he wanted out of Toledo. I still consider anyone who played at all at UT to be a Rocket.

Show me one article that claimed Kizer was "soo much more talanted than Woodside." Or says anything about him being better than a fruit fly, "because he went to Notre Dame."
Kizer is one of the biggest QB busts of my lifetime, and Woodside has held steady thru few upsets as the #2 in Tennessee. The coaches like him and it seems like fans do too. His AAF campaign really showed off his skillset. Your assessment comes off like a little UT fanboy.

RE: Rockets in the NFL/CFL/AFL: 2021
I get the feeling someone is having high school rivalry issues. Just a feeling.

Kizer is hardly a bust. Most QB's do not have any pro career, let alone long pro careers. Kizer is a contributer and will continue to be in life.

Woodside got that rare second chance. That was talent recognized, now hopefully with time to develop. He's still #2 and I imagine that any team is always going to try and strengthen that position even more than #1. It's a contract issue. 2 is easier to swap out than 1. Woodside probably hasn't had to fend off this many challenges since middle school. Got to be kind of fun for someone like him. Now if he can keep the pressure from sending him into a dark place again....

you mean like this one from back in May after just a couple days of OTAs (workouts in shorts):
https://titanswire.usatoday.com/2021/05/...p-qb-2021/

Almost every article I saw about the two of them talked about Kizer's great size, cannon arm and overall athletic ability. Meanwhile Woodside was a hard worker, studied the playbook, was liked by the coaches. Almost never talk about his ability. Also you see people talk about Kizer having a better pedigree than Woodside, which could refer to him having some NFL experience, but most often seems to allude to an ND QB having a better chance than a UT QB.

Before the season some Titan's insiders reported that the supposed reason they didn't try to sign a veteran QB in the off-season was not because they liked Woodside, but because they liked Kizer. And then there was the trope you hear sometimes from folks on social media that Kizer just played on bad teams in the NFL, and people remember the bad teams and not his great ability. If he had been on a good team he would have been great.

Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against DeShone. I wish him luck finding a career in the game. Just tired of everyone downplaying Woodside.

Oh, I even left off one QB competitor in my list, when the Titans invited Brady White for a tryout. Some folks in internet land were sure he would have a path two the number 2 cause, you know, better than Woodside. He didn't get signed.

From your post, it seems to me they were talking about Kizer's measurables, not his pedigree. I don't know who these people are you refer to but any experts on NFL are well aware the number of smaller college elites at the position. They're not going to be enamored because one is from ND and honestly, I think it makes us look small to harp on it.

These are pros. Woodside will stand or fall on his own qualifications, not his pedigree.
