RE: So, What Exactly Would It Take To Make The ACC Competitive In Revenue?
It seems to me that if the ACC were to go to 16 by adding the Texahoma Four and ceding Va Tech and NC State to the SEC, that wouldn't change Notre Dame's existing contractual obligation to join the ACC for football before considering any other conference. They are, after all, a member for all other sports. In that event, I would imagine the ACC and ESPN would agree to taking the ACC to 18 with ND and someone like West Virginia, Cincinnati or UCF.

But ND would only do this if the CFP stays at four teams but goes to P4 champs only, which I personally doubt would happen. And if they went to eight teams, ND would surely stay independent.

The Texahoma 4 to the ACC is a non-starter in the playoff football world. It leaves no value to move to the PAC.
Now if you really wanted to move a block of 4 schools. The Texas 4 to the SEC while shifting Kentucky and Tennessee to the ACC would do the trick.
Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas and Kansas would give the PAC a blue blood in football and basketball in the central time zone which should boost them by a large margin.
B1G could have Iowa State and Notre Dame, but in this scenario it is the leprechaun that gets to keep the pot of gold.

Texas/Oklahoma moving to any conference would be enough for the CFP to consider P4 champs only. The rest of the Big 12 would just be screwed unless other conferences throw them lifelines. The SEC and Big Ten don't "need" Texas/Oklahoma and the networks can certainly lowball the Big 12 if they really want Texas/Oklahoma in the SEC or Big Ten (which would make more sense/CENTS) for them. If I'm FOX, I'd rather overpay the Pac 12 to take Texas/Oklahoma than keep overpaying for Texas Tech, Kansas State, West Virginia, etc. At least people live in California. But of course Big Ten+Texas+Oklahoma is the best situation for FOX.

Feels like they will continue to over pay UT/ou to keep the Big12 going. I just can't see UT despite whatever money Fox offers them to bolt to the BiG.. just doesn't fit the model

Agree. P4 champs only CFP is plausible if the B12 and PAC merge. The P4 conferences need to be relatively equal in football strength for a champs only format to be preferred by the P4. If a Texahoma group (led by UT and OU) joins the ACC, then both the ACC and SEC are better-off with the current CFP structure. UT and OU help ACC payouts, but ND’s priority is not media payouts...ND prefers football independence.

ESPN is not giving Texas up to the PAC or the B1G, at least not while the 'Horns are under contract to the Mouse (which is about another 10 years).

Nobody needs to do anything to keep the PAC as a legitimate player in a P4. Which is good, because nobody who would join them would help them. Let them stay just the way they are. Their value to the CFP is that they make it a coast to coast affair, with all four continental time zones involved. Without them, just the way they are, you could lose the interest of 40% of your potential audience.

We just have to accept that there are some things we can't fix, and geography is one of them.

If ESPN could tear up the Longhorn Network contract, they would. That contract is great for UT and ESPN is overpaying. Now would ESPN want no rights to UT at all is debatable but they also want the rights to the Big Ten as well, it's a matter of money as well as available space.

ESPN made its bed with the SEC and FOX loves the Big Ten. Certainly the Big Ten could split their first tier rights like they do now but could FOX want all of the Big Ten's first tier rights? Could CBS want in? It's not impossible that ESPN could get all of the Pac 12+UT+UO or Big 10+UT+UO although I'd be shocked if FOX was completely shut out of the Big 10. If FOX gets full tier Big 10 rights without TexOklahoma, I can believe ESPN could go for Pac 12 + TexOklahoma if FOX and CBS have no interest.

RE: So, What Exactly Would It Take To Make The ACC Competitive In Revenue?
I'm perfectly OK with leaving the CFP at four schools, with no requirement that they all be conference champions (the way it is now). If that leaves Notre Dame as an independent, so be it.

In my dream scenario, I have Virginia Tech and NC State moving to the SEC, Kansas and Iowa State to the B1G, and all six B12 schools from Texas and Oklahoma going to the ACC as one of three 6 team divisions.

Kansas State and West Virginia are left out of the P4, but not out of an AQ5. That is, they would move to the AAC, which would be guaranteed a spot in an NY6 bowl. Navy becomes a partial football member of the AAC, playing half its members one year and the other half the next.

The path to either the CFP or the NY6 becomes slightly more difficult for the G4 than it already is. They lose their guaranteed spot (which now goes to the AAC). Their best champ would probably need to be ranked in the Top Ten to get an NY6 invitation, or Top Four for the CFP (as is the current case).

The ACC would gain significant financial ground on the B1G and SEC, and would outpace the PAC. Independents, including Notre Dame and BYU, have a theoretical path to the CFP, just like any other FBS school, but should they get invited to either the CFP or NY6 their payout would not exceed what a member of a P4 conference would get as their share from their conference.

What's the point of improving the ACC and moving your school out of it? That would be like me wanting to add Notre Dame and Texas to the Big Ten but also moving out Penn State and Illinois.

What is there to know? ESPN didn't sign the LHN deal until 2031 and give them an average of 15 million a year because they were stupid. They did it to tie down the top College Football product until they could figure out how to land them fully.

Now what happens to the Big 12 depends on if ESPN decides to buy all of their rights or not. If they do they'll be fine. If they don't ESPN will try hard to place Texas, Oklahoma, possibly Kansas and anyone else they have to place to make it happen.

It was all about keeping UT away from FOX and the Big 10. It doesn't mean they are bound for the SEC or ACC but it doesn't rule it out either.

RE: So, What Exactly Would It Take To Make The ACC Competitive In Revenue?
I may talk about FOX and the Big Ten as being a couple and FOX does part own BTN but at this point ESPN still has rights to the Big Ten so I don't see a real need for ESPN to keep Texas away from the Big 10. Right now, the only difference between the Big 10 and Big 12 is that FOX doesn't own any network rights to the Big 12 (but they do Oklahoma/Sooner Sports). FOX shares first tier rights with ESPN in both conferences. Now once the new Big 10 contract(s) are signed, everything could change. But the idea that the Big Ten and ESPN are enemies and ESPN has to keep UT away from them as opposed to the Big 12 doesn't make sense to me. Should the Big Ten go all in with FOX, I can see ESPN wanting to "keep" Texas but considering how much money they lose on LHN they also have their accountants to answer to.

If you don't believe my opinion that LHN was a disaster for ESPN, here's a few others (although they are a bit dated):

I don't have a favorite conference or a favorite school. I would like to see better competition all around, and am trying to find a solution that all the stakeholders benefit from. Frankly, I suspect if the SEC and ESPN want it badly enough they could put UT and OU into the SEC and let everybody else fight for second place. I don't think that's healthy for college football.

But reality says the SEC needs to get something it wants if it's going to let somebody else get what they want. And entry into population rich (and talent at least well to do) North Carolina and Virginia is something I believe they would like to have, and I doubt UNC and UVa are going to agree to go to the SEC by themselves.

One thing several conferences might want is a four team Conference Championship Tournament for which they don't have to share revenue with any other conference. Taking the B1G, SEC and ACC to 16 teams (or to 18 in the ACC's case) would enable that.

The reason to take the ACC to 18 is to give Texahoma a division of their own, because regional recruiting and scheduling is crucial to Texas and Oklahoma. They may have enough semi-regional foes in an SEC West, but not enough OOC games to schedule many Texas teams left behind.

At the end of the day, ESPN has to be happy with the outcome or none of this, or anything else, is going to happen in the absence of game changing legislation.

You do realize that the LHN is now making a profit.

So, despite a losing football team, Kagan projects the network will achieve its first profit in 2016, at roughly $2 million on net revenue of $32 million. Don't laugh too hard: The LHN still represents a nice financial windfall for the Longhorns, and ESPN appears to be steering the project out of the reeds.

They need to revamp the network.. they should add Texas high school sports.. the whole recruiting advantage was overblown and gave certain schools excuses to justify leaving.

the all access shows are terrific. Like for them to make it weekly or every other week during the offseason.

But back to the topic of expansion or realignment.. LHN has value to be added to a conference network.. Since it's owned by ESPN, it could easily be made to a SEC West/ACC west/Big12 network channel and keep it moving

Report: Longhorn Network bleeding money in first 5 yearshttps://www.saturdaydownsouth.com › SEC Football

Maybe the rules have changed but the NCAA said no to Texas high school sports on the LHN before.

Overall the LHN has value and is becoming more and more profitable.
Texas' annual take continues to grow and will until the end of the contract. I think someone posted the other day that they are now receiving over $17 million per year (the LHN contract, like most media contracts, is back end loaded).

RE: So, What Exactly Would It Take To Make The ACC Competitive In Revenue?
There won't be a P4 champs only model.

For 3 reasons.

1. The SEC would never agree to it. They have proven they can get 2 teams in the CFP and that has serious branding power. They have no reason to give up this advantage. As we have seen in the news recently, any structural changes to the CFP have to be unanimous.

2. Which brings me to my second point. The G5 would never agree to being locked out. The only way around this one is a total separation between the two groups...total.

3. Texas and Oklahoma have little motivation to move the ball in this direction. Right now, they have CFP access by getting through the Big 12. They have just as good a chance as anyone. If you reduce the opportunity to get in by limiting it to one per league then UT and OU will have to fight the powers of another league for access. The odds of entry are reduced because someone somewhere will have a better conference than someone else.

If all the conferences were equal then it wouldn't matter, but that is not the case and never will be.

(05-24-2021 10:51 AM)ken d Wrote:  I'm perfectly OK with leaving the CFP at four schools, with no requirement that they all be conference champions (the way it is now).

That move would disentangle a lot of complicated internal problems with respect to alignment, since the two programs you have leaving would stay well-placed in the region. I would shift Miami to be with the other former Big East programs, reviving both BC-Miami and Syracuse-Miami as annuals to generate more interest in the region. Also, no longer any need to separate Clemson and UNC.

Texas
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
TCU
Baylor
Texas Tech

Louisville
Pittsburgh
Syracuse
Boston College
Miami
Wake Forest

North Carolina
Duke
Virginia
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Florida State

The major question is how much Disney would have to pay the Big Ten to take in KU and ISU, because we're not going to pick them up just to pick them up.
