Epic! You know, I wonder if they could get a high school game or 2 in Sep to work out any kinks. Would be excellent recruiting, too (if there aren’t TOO many kinks)
But can you really have too many Kinks?

The local high schools have been wanting out of Legion Field longer than UAB. It is too expensive for their crowds and too big. I believe they would be delighted to play at Protective Field if the money issues were right. How many B'ham city high schools have their own comparable stadiums today like most suburban high schools do?

I believe except for Ramsay all city schools have their own game stadiums.

Lawson Field has an interesting history. The original bond issue was voted by the City Commission but stated that none of the money could be used for buying land (it had to be public park land) or for land prep, like grading. (Where would Protective Stadium be built if its bonds had the same restrictions?) The bond money just sat there for decades waiting for the right circumstances.
Lawson was a public spirited Vice President at USX. He arranged for USX to donate the land near Oporto-Madrid and to have the land graded for the stadium so it was named for him when finally built. He also arranged for the donation of USX land in west Jeffco for a JUCO which is also named for him. [Triivia -- One Lawson administrator was Barbara Green who invited her brother in law to speak there. That is how Gen Colin Powell (married to Alma, Barbara's sister) came to speak there.]
