Usually a good sign they are working off of raw numbers. That means certain institutions have built in advantages of overall numbers.

Are you saying that is why Tulsa is ranked next to last in the AAC? Just trying to understand your suspicion.....

My suspicion is that its raw numbers. Looking at how smaller enrollment schools are ranked and looking at the criteria, my suspicions are proven correct. That does not mean that Tulsa is not properly ranked. Just means that Tulsa is one of the schools that does not naturally benefit from the criteria. Something say looking at faculty to student ratio for the individual instruction would benefit Tulsa.

If I notice other schools who have similar profiles are ranked in similar positions I am fairly confident the measurement is "fair" but not necessarily reflective of overall positioning. How good this data is depends on how you use it, judging for a high end stem student interested in research this is an excellent ranking of where the action is and where you might get the best opportunity to advance. Perhaps in philosophy or communications majors this ranking isn't as effective.

My alma mater (Miami University) ranked 190 - 822. I guess all of that public Ivy stuff was a load of crap. I don't disagree though.

RE: World University Rankings 2020-2021
Cincinnati has done a TON of work in recent decades to improve academically, and it has paid off. If you're looking for real world experience and the highest chance of landing a job in your field, UC is very strong due to its co-op and internship programs. These rankings though are always subjective, and lean more heavily towards certain things. Overall, I think we compare pretty favorably to the other major conferences in terms of academics. The AAC is full of schools its graduates can be proud to put on their resumes.

They ranked just below Toledo which had a pretty bad academic reputation outside of a few select programs while I was there.

It is probably Top 10 for prettiest girls, and I won't hear arguments otherwise. The campus is really nice. It was cool to watch Ben Roethlisberger shred teams while I was there. Other than that, it seemed fine. I wasn't blown back by the instructors or anything like that. I heard the business school is a big deal. I got an engineering degree, so I wouldn't know. The ranking seems reasonable.

This is AAC talk, and not lowly MAC talk, so sorry for going off topic.

It's funny how posters on this board always ignore the university that makes the most sense to join the AAC. UAB is ranked higher than every school in the AAC (66 - 179).

Curious what they use to measure a universities quality.

Yeah---Navy is as rigorous and academically honorable as a school can be---but the specialization and uniqueness of its mission is always going to make it difficult to compare to other more typical universities. For instance, in US News and World Report---Navy is ranked with the national liberal arts schools---I dont know---lol---but that just doesnt sound right to me....

It's funny how fans of schools who aren't in the AAC always ignore the fact that posters on this board don't want to be told who they should or should not ignore when it comes to expansion. Our own opinions are ranked higher than the fans of every other school outside the AAC.

Eh, you can make a case that the service academies fit the classic definition of a "liberal arts education" -- as opposed to a modern definition of a liberal arts degree. Combining the sciences and the humanities, teaching one to think, and molding a student to be a good well-rounded citizen.
Mr. Jefferson would have liked our curriculum, I dare say.

I was an history major, but my degree says "Bachelor of Science" because it included mathematics through Calculus III and Differential Equations, chemistry, physics, electrical engineering, systems engineering, thermodynamics, and more as core curriculum. I daresay other core courses like leadership, law for the junior officer, and others fit the classic definition of a liberal arts education, too.

The case -- and I'm not saying it's ironclad -- is that we have a lot more specialization in higher education today.
How many humanities classes does an engineering major take at most schools?
And at most "liberal arts" schools, I would say that a BA can be gained with minimal STEM exposure.

I've got four daughters in school. Three at schools classed as small liberal arts schools. One finished undergrad with what we would have called a Communications degree, but it is Interactive Media these days - so checks the "tech" block, but very little science or math, and no engineering. (She's now in a one year Masters program, also in Interactive Media, at another "liberal arts school.")
Two have been in science/math majors at a small liberal arts school, so they're getting that well-rounded thing.
Youngest is at a recognizable name school, classified as a private research university, ...she's in an interdisciplinary program, so full marks for the current perception of liberal arts, but not the grounding in sciences for that "classic liberal arts education" definition.

The bigger point for Navy, again, is that there are really only two other schools like us -- I suppose you could add in Coast Guard and Merchant Marine Academies. For the point of the thread, we don't do research, so we suffer in rankings that are weighted for research.

I never heard of Differential Equations until my uncle who was an eye doctor told me that was a course he took (I was a kid).

Some notable schools for consideration to join the AAC, and schools that interest me personally. USA rankings.

262-Boise State
158-BYU
145-Georgia State
86-Colorado State
70-Uconn
168-Nevada
192-UNLV

287-TCU
242-Marquette
227-Villanova
132-Louisville
129-Alabama
185-Northern Illinois
17-Illinois
14-Northwestern
6-University of Chicago
1-Harvard

It's funny how posters on this board always ignore the university that makes the most sense to join the AAC. UAB is ranked higher than every school in the AAC (66 - 179).

UAB is under the thumb of Alabammmmer. That will never fly.

Yeah I caught that going through the list.

The majority of UAB students are BAMA fans.
