If FBS goes to a 12 team playoff, predict the format of the playoff.

5-1-6. I'd be shocked if it was anything but.

RE: 12 Team Playoff Format
This is college football we're talking about: Probably the 12 highest ranked teams w/ the biggest brand names. So Top 12 in final CFP rankings, I suppose.
Tho, hopefully it'd be 5-1-6. I voted that.

RE: 12 Team Playoff Format
I voted top 12 in final CFP rankings. I feel like the two highest options are final 12 in CFP rankings or a 5-1-6 format.

Agreed. It's totally set up to head down this road.

My preference would be "straight 12", but my prediction would be 5-1-6.

RE: 12 Team Playoff Format
I voted other, because I don't want to see a 12 team playoff. That was before I saw that the thread would say I have to assume a 12 team playoff. I would have said top 12 teams otherwise. If you aren't in the Top 12 you have no business in a playoff. Period.

Top 6 is what I want. Bye week for the top two.

RE: 12 Team Playoff Format
P5 conference champs should never be given an automatic slot unless all FBS champs get one. For that reason, it should be the top 12 teams and that’s that.

Top 4 champs should get the byes, even if 11-1 Alabama or 12-0 Notre Dame is #1.
I “expect“ a 7th champ to be given a spot if in the Top 20; but G5 should push for a guaranteed 7th and/or an 8th (if in Top 20).
Know this: a 12-team format is a half-step away from 16. If there are 6 or more at larges with 12, the G5 will never get all 10 champs in at 16.

The AAC has dominated the NY6 access bowl, it's in the best interest of the MWC, Sunbelt, CUSA & MAC to push for the AAC to be included in the autobids and get a G4 access spot.

The dirty secret here is that if 5-1-6 becomes reality, the AAC calls Boise or BYU and becomes a de facto power conference that monopolizes the "midmajor" bid.
If you're the AAC, this is actually a win condition for the conference. This is EXACTLY how you do P6. You can afford to give BYU favorable terms here, too - that's how important owning that bid becomes.

It's not much of a secret - I've been saying for a while that nothing could make "P6" a defacto reality faster than a G5 autobid, be it in an 8-team or now a 12-team playoff. The AAC stands by far the most to gain among *all* conferences, G5 or P5, in a 5-1-2 or 5-1-6 format.
Which is why if I am the rest of the "G" conferences, I would not support that autobid, unless there was a play-in game involving at least one other G5 conference champ.
Otherwise, they are just going to be sitting around twiddling their thumbs 4 out of 5 years while an AAC team goes to playoffs, by virtue of a "G5" autobid, while all the while Aresco is shouting even louder that the AAC doesn't belong in the very G5 whose bid is raising his profile so much.
The other "Gs" would be suckers to go along with that.

If the CFP goes to a 5-1-6 or 6-1-5 the AAC doesn't need to give BYU favorable terms in either scenario. With either one if BYU has CFP aspirations they will jump to the AAC the moment that scenario happens since it would provide them with actual access.

I voted the 5-1-6. That would seem the most likely if we ever have a 12-team playoff.

RE: 12 Team Playoff Format
6 highest ranked conference champions plus 6 highest ranked at large.
4 highest ranked conference champions receive a 1st round bye.
In order to be considered a conference champion, a conference must have at least 8 teams and each conference member must play at least 7 conference games, not counting the CCG.
After 12 teams are picked,, Seeds 5 through 12 will be based on overall ranking. Teams may drop a seed to avoid 1st or 2nd round rematch, or to avoid playing a team from same conference.
First round games will be the week after CCG at CFP pre-approved sites, usually the NFL stadium closest to the higher seed
2nd round games will be bowl games, 2 on NYD and 2 on Saturday close to NYD
Semi-finals will be 2 weeks after NYD
NCG will be the Saturday the week before the Super Bowl.

RE: 12 Team Playoff Format
I clicked 7 auto hide by accident. I thin 6 autobuses are more likely. My thoughts are as follows
4 top ranked conference champs get a first round bye and home field advantage in the quarterfinals. The remaining auto bids are given a first round home game regardless of rankings.
Bowl games held Tuesdays-Fridays. Tournament games are on Saturday.
First round 2 weeks after conference championship games and a week after army and navy game.
Quarterfinals are held a week after.
Semifinals are held in 2 NY6 bowls and championship game held the week after.

This raises an interesting point. What comes of the Army-Navy game?

Maybe make it a "exhibition" game. Though you have to make the Air Force games as a exhibition. The only thing I can think of the is NCAA forcing the game being played before the championship game. Maybe have it a week 0 kickoff game every year? Another possibility is have both Army and Navy ineligible for the playoff if the game is played after the championship game.
If Navy refuses to move the Army-Navy game and the NCAA rules them ineligible.(not going to happen) Would it be worth it for Navy to stay in the AAC? Would the AAC look attractive still to Boise State or/and Byu to get to 12? All they would need is another Olympic only school for 12 all.

RE: 12 Team Playoff Format
Any format that includes, or even makes likely, 2 or more G5 teams is DOA. We should all know that by now.
