In other threads, people were asking about what WAC team could leave to get the WAC down to 12 members. I didn't really want to comment on it because I am not a conference-realignment enthusiast. But CBU looks to be the best positioned to leave, if the opportunity arose. They are in a large metro. Great facilities. Appear to have some money in the coffers. Have been super successful in their short time at D1. They just check a lot of boxes.
GCU has the for-profit stigma. UVU is one of 7 D1 schools in Utah and was formerly a community college. Seattle has poor facilities and so-so success in sports. CBU was such a great addition to the WAC.

Wouldn't surprise me. The WAC keeps spinning their wheels on D2 schools who keep bolting. Dixie seems different. I hope. The trajectory of CBU is off the charts. It was barely 10 years ago they were NAIA, winning the all sports title. A quick rise through D2 where they were winning the all sports title. Wouldn't shock me to see them in the WCC.

I agree that CBU was a great match for both parties.

CBU falls behind GCU & UVU in cup standings after WVB is added. https://www.wacsports.com/commissionercup/2020-21
Based on remaining sports, it looks like GCU should take the cup. They are currently first in men's soccer, men's & women's tennis, and softball. If memory serves GCU has also been either first or second in track ever since they joined the WAC.

CBU = 33
8 sports remaining: Golf (men's & women's); Tennis (men's & women's); track & field (men's & women's), softball and baseball.

If it is of any interest, Stephen F Austin (126) and Sam Houston State (116) are 1-2 in the Southland Commissioners Cup with three sports remaining (SB, BSB. Abilene (104.5) is a half-point behind Southeastern (105.0) for third. Lamar is seventh. In total, the five SLC schools (four Texas schools & Central Arkansas) leaving are 5 of top 7 which is not unusual.

RE: Commissioners Cup standings
GCU has clinched another Commissioner's Cup (3rd in 4 years) as they are way ahead of the pack with only baseball left to calculate.
GCU took home first place finishes in tennis (men & women), track & field (men & women), soccer (men only), basketball (men only) and perhaps baseball. It was a good year to be a Lope.
Current Standings
GCU = 74
NMSU = 56
UVU = 52
CBU = 42
UTRGV = 34
SU = 33
Tarleton = 17.5
DSU = 15.5
CSU = 10.5

RE: Commissioners Cup standings
Next year should be interesting with football added to the equation and more schools, meaning the point total(s) for sports will be increased across the board.
GCU does have some sort of advantage with teams in three sports in which SFA, SHSU (MSOC, MSW&D, WSW&D) though Sam & SFA do compete in football too.

The WAC Commissioner's Cup is back home.
For the third time in four years and the third consecutive full athletic year, Grand Canyon claimed the Commissioner's Cup this year as the WAC's most successful athletic program.
The Lopes also won for 2017-18 and 2018-19, but this GCU Athletics victory marked the most emphatic in conference history. The Lopes claimed 77.5 points for a record-setting 21.5-point gap over runner-up New Mexico State.
2020-21 WAC Commissioner's Cup standings
Place Member Points
1. GCU 77.5

3. Utah Valley 53
4. California Baptist 47.5
5. UT Rio Grande Valley 36

Grand Canyon competes in every official WAC sport. NMSU does not compete in Men's Soccer, Men's Diving & Swimming, and Men's Outdoor Track because NMSU supports FBS football which takes up a lions share of the men's scholarships. GCU probably would have won the Commissioner's Cup regardless but the lack of points collected in those three sports is what creates the large margin of victory. The only two schools who compete is every WAC sport are GCU and Seattle. It will be interesting to see if the WAC adds sports to the Commissioner's Cup competition to accommodate the addition of the Texas schools (Football and maybe Women's Beach Volleyball.)

take out the sports NMSU doesn't compete in and GCU still wins it by 6.5...
Also from a friends of mine they did dug deeper and found that GCU averaged 4.5 points per varsity team (17), while NMSU only averaged 4.0 points per team (14).
So can we stop with this NMSU doesn't compete in every WAC sport offered fall back response?

Ha!! Cubano, you are too much!! And for the record, "coach" was always the first to post whenever NMSU won the cup. Now he's the first to tell us why GCU winning doesn't matter.

NAU averaged 6 points per WAC Sport
Nice, lol. The WAC's original Lumberjacks:)

1. GCU 77.5
2. New Mexico State 56
3. Utah Valley 53
4. California Baptist 47.5
5. UT Rio Grande Valley 36
6. Seattle U 33
7. Dixie State 18.5
7. Tarleton 18.5
9. Chicago State 10.5
Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon competes in every official WAC sport. NMSU does not compete in Men's Soccer, Men's Diving & Swimming, and Men's Outdoor Track because NMSU supports FBS football which takes up a lions share of the men's scholarships. RE: Commissioners Cup standings
I wonder if new WAC members will realign their sports offerings to become more competitive in the all sports trophy chase, or if the WAC will rethink the sports it sponsors in light of NCAA sports that are rapidly growing?
In either case it’s difficult to imagine football schools adding new men’s sports. It would reek havoc with Title IX compliance.
