RE: 2021-2022 Men's Basketball
Hawks still need 1 more big to feel good about having the roster covered. The freshman big McGriff will likely need to put on some weight. Hopefully he’s doing that. Kelly is ready to play now but ideally you need to be able to have 3 bigs. I do like it that they both like to block shots!

Agree. Luckily we have a lot of seniors on this team, so next year will be wide open for the younger guys to get some PT this year, and earn a starting spot next year. Siddle has also shown that you must earn your PT on his team, so this will bring out the best in our guys, or it will reveal the ones who aren't up playing up to his standards.
Here are our players by class:
Fr. McCracken, Thomas, McGriff, White
So. Oglesby, Harvey
Jr. - Phillips, Kelly
Sr. - Fornes, Baker, Okauru, Sims
Not sure how the eligibility rules work. I would guess Sims and Baker have another year, while Okauru and Fornes would be done after this year. I would imagine Siddle will give Fornes and Okauru as much PT as possible to help them in their quest to get paid to play after college.
I’ll be honest. This entire post slightly confused me.
“Siddle has shown you must earn your playing time on this team...” - Agree, and that’s a great thing.
“...or it will reveal the ones who aren’t up playing up to his standards.” - They better be. This is his team now. These are all his guys. I know a few are McGrath holdovers but these are the ones he’s essentially told us in other words he was okay with sticking around because of his system fit.
“I would imagine Siddle will give Fornes and Okauru as much PT as possible to help them in their quest to get paid to play after college.” - This contradicts your first statement that all PT is earned. I agree that those two will get a good chunk of it, but the reasoning is different from your first statement so I’m confused.
I don’t care if someone is a true freshman or a redshirt senior, earn the PT and get the team wins. I’m all for these guys having successful post-college careers but it should be earned not just given because of their connection to Siddle past and/or present.

Especially true in the transfer portal era. Nothing will discourage a player more than playing behind a guy that he's better than just because he's younger.
I think Siddle proved last year that he'll make guys earn PT, so I'm not talking about UNCW specifically, just that mindset.

I can see your point. But Siddle didn't have to keep Okauru around, and he did. And he has a prior relationship with Fornes, so he knows what he's getting from him as well. He didn't bring them on to have them sit the bench as seniors. With the exception of Sims, Harvey and Phillips, the rest of the players are unknowns and will have to earn PT. And the 4/5 spots are pretty much up for grabs.
I guess my point is that Phillips, Okauru, Fornes, Harvey and Sims have an advantage when it come to PT. Someone will have to go far and above what they bring to the court to take their PT.
Luckily, most of the incoming recruits won't be playing the same positions.

RE: 2021-2022 Men's Basketball
I'm excited for Craig Ponder to join the staff and I see that Sanders is not listed any longer, but I never saw where he is going.
Also, I know 82 brought up that Estime was still listed on the roster. There was a picture of the team doing Spring drills and Estime was participating, so I think there is a chance he returns next year. Brant tweeted about it last week

If he returns, am I right that there are no scholarships available to recruit another big man?

No, I think we have two. Okauru is a COVID scholarship and is being granted an extra year, but he doesn't count against the scholarship limit. Distributing the minutes is the challenge, but I think we still have a scholarship available.
I probably have the COVID explanation wrong. Not sure about my explanation, but fairly confident we do have two available scholarships open (Estime +1).

Just looked on VC, and we offered another class of 22 Wing

I saw that last night. Noah Ross out of Trinity Academy in Raleigh (same HS as Isaiah Todd). I'll have to check him out this year assuming I'm allowed.

We are going to be loaded at the two and three guard spots if Estime stays. I always liked his game, but he hasn't had an injury free year I can remember. He's got to be 24 years old by now....

We are already loaded there, even without him.

RE: 2021-2022 Men's Basketball
Looks like our roster is set for 2021-2022. Seven new faces on the roster, with five returning from last year and Fornes with his comeback return. If Siddle can use the depth and athleticism on this roster, we could finally see Run/Defend/Win part Deux in full action this fall. Can't wait.
Phillps (PG) -Soph 6'0" 170 lbs
Thomas (PG) Fr 6'0" 185 lbs
Okauru(SG) - Sr 6'3" 185 lbs.
Fornes(SG) - Sr 6'3" 210 lb
McCracken(SG) -Fr 6'4" 175 lbs.
Harvey(SG) - Fr 6'5" 175 lbs.
Estime(SG) - Sr 6'5" 185 lbs.
Sims(SG/4) -Jr 6'6" 195 lbs.
White(4) - So 6'6" 195 lbs
Baker(SG/4) - Sr 6'6" 205 lbs.
McGriff - Fr 6'8" 190 lbs
Kelly © - So 6'9" 230 lbs
Samb © Jr. 6'8" 200 lbs.

RE: 2021-2022 Men's Basketball
With so much depth from the 1-4 spot i'm not really worried about who will play there, but it will be really interesting to see who ends up starting and getting the most minutes at the 5. I really liked what I saw from Samb in the videos linked here. I could see him grabbing a defensive board, then getting the ball up quickly with his dribble and actually leading the break. Then following up if the fast break shot is missed. He's also got the size and length to defend when we press.

RE: 2021-2022 Men's Basketball
Anyone hearing anything on the schedule?
Looking at the previous year's agreements here is what it is looking like to me
HOME
vs. ECU?? - I think last year's ECU game in Greenville was a buy game but not certain
vs. Campbell
vs. Norfolk State
AWAY
@Delaware State
@Charlotte
For that @UNC?? game UNC has released their non conference schedule and the 2nd UNC home game is not on it.
Since this was a McGrath era deal I doubt it will be made up

Now that’s a quality mid major game to schedule! Two schools who have traditions of winning and both have passionate college basketball fan bases. Hope there is a return game in the contract in Wilmington next year.
