WAC might be a larger geographic league, and lost a little shine bc of UT/OU ripples, but it's still miles ahead of the Southland when it comes to meeting teams like SFA, ACU, & Tarleton's goals.

McMurphy reported that Tarleton and EKU met with C-USA in March they could be the next to leave and UIW is having second thoughts about leaving Southland now.

That's why I question if UTRGV should have that strong commitment to the WAC. If Tarleton goes to CUSA and IWU backs out you're left with SFA and ACU plus non football UTA along with maybe football UTRGV.

I am not a Southland Conference fan (though I'd watch them before any other FCS conference), nor a fan of any team in the conference. But are there no entrance or exit fees in Division 1 FCS? Is ESPN+ not paying the conference anything to broadcast their games? Are there are no travel expenses to Utah, Arizona, California and Washington involved? Is there not new leadership in the Southland Conference now? These are both Division 1 conferences, one emphasizes football, the other emphasizes basketball (and are football wannabes). Which one would be best for UIW, whose football program is far more competitive than their basketball program? They may not be ready or able to upgrade their basketball yet, and the WAC has no football powerhouses any more, so why move?

There is no chance that a whole conference will become FBS. A few individual schools will make it such as Jacksonville State and Sam Houston State. But the future for the WAC-ASUN looks bleak. If I were one of their individual schools, I would be cutting my losses and looking for a permanent home right now. Or settling for football independence like Liberty and New Mexico State. A Utah to Georgia alliance likely will not last long in FCS.

What you say is true. That is why what UIW decides to do is so important. Also whether C-USA is at all interested in Tarleton State and/or Eastern Kentucky. A conference has more authority than a scheduling alliance.

That is true. Lamar got a new president and AD and the other schools have not. But if Incarnate Word decides to stay in the Southland (which we should know before July 1), then ACU, SFA, UTRGV, and Tarleton will be all that is left in the Southwest Division of the WAC.

The WAC will have 7 teams once Tarleton State and Utah Tech complete their transition and UTRGV starts their football program.

The WAC had sought a waiver for 2022-23 when they will have 7 teams (including two transitioning). This was turned down at a May 12, 2022 meeting of the Football Oversight Committee. At that time they said they would defer action on an 11th AQ. At the May 26 meeting they approved an AQ for the ASUN based on 10 teams.

The WAC and ASUN initiated a new agreement after the WAC was turned down. They might come up with a different agreement for 2023.

I don't think D1 wants conferences with less football schools, and may give a waiver to help conferences like the ASUN, WAC, OVC and MEAC to get schools to move up to D1. The hangup is the long wait before a school can play in post season. Once that goes away? We might see schools moving up like Central Oklahoma, Angelo State, West Texas A&M, colorado Mesa, etc.
