Heck, the women's team doesn't have a problem in the same sport.
I'd say it says something about the leadership of the program, but really more about the rudderlessness of men's basketball
I'm not sure if its NIU specifically or Men's basketball but the NCAA has pockets of teams that have either not played or gone stretches of missed games.
Just from a quick look (listing # of conference games played):
Saint Louis - 3 games
South Florida - 6 games
Cincinnati - 7 games
Michigan - 9 games but they've canceled a few lately
Nebraska - 7 games (just played #7 last night)
Long Beach State - 4 games
UC Davis - 4 games
UC San Diego - 5 games
Elon - 5 games
The entire Ivy League shut down for the season (but this was a choice they made in advance)
Iona - 4 games
Canisius - 6 games
North Carolina A&T - 4 games
North Carolina Central - 3 games
Bethune-Cookman - 0 games
Maryland-Eastern Shore - 0 games
Howard - 0 games
South Carolina State - 5 games
American - 4 games
Georgia State - 5 games
Texas-Rio Grande Valley - 2 games
Chicago State - 0 games
Seattle - 3 games
New Mexico State 4 games
These teams stuck out to me because they've all played about half as many games as their conference foes. But there are more that are either currently shut down and will be missing games or miss games here and there.
There's a lot more travel with basketball as opposed to football (and probably more close contact with the other team) but the women don't seem to have the same problem although, admittedly, I'm not looking through all the women's teams to see discrepancies in games played.
Nevertheless, the boys probably don't follow the rules like the girls do so...that's probably a thing.
