Slight correction: Other than Rick Minter, UC has been a revolving door of coaches since before I was born. Prior to CLF, the last great coach who had a chance to take UC to the promised land was Sid Gillman. His tenure was also relatively short. He was gone in ‘54 I believe.

I hope CLF stays here until he retires as a very old man. Given UC’s history with football coaches, if he leaves, I won’t be surprised in the least. It’s what I have come to expect.

Yep, Minter was our longest tenured coach ever. Fickell has coached 48 games at UC, which puts him only behind Minter (117), Gilman (64), Chuck Studley (60), George Blackburn (58), Dave Currey and Tim Murphy (55). After this fall Fickell will have coached UC for more games than all but Minter and Gillman (assuming he coaches a CCG or a bowl).

Thanks Q. Prayers are needed and I will do the same for you brother. My wife is scheduled for surgery on Feb 17th and it is anticipated to take about 12 hours followed potentially by a 10-12 day stay in the hospital to recover before she can come home. I don't know what the COVID protocols will be post surgery but I am allowed to be with her pre-surgery and stake out the waiting room during the procedure. This is the last hard thing we have to get through but coming out on the other side will help us put the past year-and-a-half in the rear view mirror. I don't hate many things but cancer is at the top of my list.

Q and Clifton - you guys are correct. I know a long tenured coach has not been a common occurrence going back a long time in UC's football history. I guess I always use Minter as the benchmark for what's happened moving forward since we had a longer term successful coach. Also, those coaches who left for the P5 [i.e., Dantonio, Kelly, Jones]. All I know is I'm going to enjoy the ride as long as it lasts with Big Fick. It's been a helluva ride so far gents.

It’s safe to say there’s no imminent reason to jump ship. Most coaches who end up making poor choices move on after a one off fluke season or when they’ve plateaued and they need to strike while the irons hot. Or when there’s scandals to get out ahead of.

He’s in a great spot to be as picky as he wants to be. Hopefully he waits many more years for a home run

Don't forget, these coaches are just like a player who is deciding to declare for the draft after their Junior year. One bad or mediocre season can lose you a ton of money (and opportunities). If someone came to me after my most productive year and offered to double my salary and all I had to do was relocate my family, but if I don't do as well next year I may not get that opportunity again, I probably wouldn't have to think too hard about it.

Also, don't underestimate the extra perks some of these bigger schools can offer that Fick or some of those other coaches may not have had at their disposal. For instance, use of a private plane.

You are absolutely correct about business opportunities and the MASSIVE risk turning them down.
I do believe Fickell has now sustained enough success to prove his value, that even if UC does backslide he’d continue to receive similar offers and interest to what he’s received so far.
