CollegeAD: As the WAC Gets Back Into Football, Sources Detail Where UTRGV Stands
Did anyone read what CollegeAD put out yesterday?

(I am essentially cross posting from the UTRGV forum, my apologies)...

UTRGV football was a headline but alas, I do not subscribe. They had “sources” on the subject and certainly even this report would have not guessed the WAC having five football playing schools in Texas as we seem to be inching closer to

Anyone know what’s going on in the Valley?
Is the expansion to include four SLC football in Texas a driver in the conversation?
Where’s the money coming from?

RE: CollegeAD: As the WAC Gets Back Into Football, Sources Detail Where UTRGV Stands
Schools make moves, usually individually. This is an unusual situation where the long established Texas football schools have decided to leave the SLC. It is a decision driven by the ADs and Presidents, essentially to break with the SLC leadership (which they must have deep irrevocable differences with -- such that the SLC is trying to push them out this June with no lame duck year the Texas schools propose) and with the Louisiana schools, whom they have lost confidence with.

But for UTRGV to start football it requires additional constituencies to buy in and pony up significant money. UTRGV in fact had a study of D-I football where the conclusion was FBS possibly makes sense (i.e., the route Old Dominion, Charlotte and Texas-San Antonio went) but starting an FCS program does not -- when you figure in stadium and other facility requirements for a start up. To start an FCS program would need another study, a commitment from donors and a facilities plan and timeline. It seems a few bridges too far.

Where’s the money coming from?

Hmm, $17 to get a peek at it. I'd considering paying if it was guaranteed to be real news, but very likely it's just someone rediscovering or rehashing the old news that we did a study once.

"Where’s the money coming from?"

I'm glad you understand the issue. There is no money.

Yeah, I work there, which makes me the last to know. That study was posted somewhere. The first part of the summary people are giving here is pretty much correct: "FBS or nothing". Where they're wrong is not realizing that was just a face-saving way to say "nothing".

Chrisattsu says Big Citrus or HEB. I also worked in an orange grove when young and there's just not a lot of money in it. You people do not pay enough for citrus. As for HEB, my understanding is they're just a little bit sour on UTRGV. Not super sour, but their big donations seem to go elsewhere. Maybe if we changed our school colors to HEB red and renamed our team the "Stockers".

Yes, a grocery chain in the region.

HEB is a grocery chain, headquarters in San Antonio. If you grew up in the area they cover you don't even have the word "grocery" or "supermarket" in your vocabulary, you just say you're going to the HEB.

Even if you're an armed robber rather than a shopper:

As far as big citrus, he's using the term like big pharma. Then consider how much people spend on medicine versus how much they spend on our premier crop, red grapefruit. Scale our football aspirations in the same proportion.

Chris was joking that the citrus industy in the Valley and HEB, Texas' preeminent grocery chain, will financially prop up UTRGVs move to FBS.

Don't be silly. There is gobs and GOBS of money. Don't forget you are UTRGV. And a PUF institution, at that. $500 million in new construction and upgrades you've enjoyed over the past five years is just a drop in the bucket for the UT System. If they decide they want football in South Texas, they bring football fo South Texas. Simple as that. UTRGV is a juggernaut just waiting to happen. You just opened a new medical school and hospital, for Pete's sake. Virtually overnight. This is why I think we'll see a A&M Kingsville/Corpus merger as an effort to keep the Force in check in South Texas. With the #Texas5 now in the WAC with FBS on the brain, football could very well be in play for Los Vaqueros, but it damn sure won't be FCS.

The Bobcat is right, I was just joking.
Sarcasm doesn't translate without on here without the /s.

The Valley is known for citrus but I don't see them throwing coin just like I don't see Big Dairy (Tarletons regional industry) funding our athletics.

HEB is a beast in the region but there are too many people coming at them. They may be able to throw a few bones their way but not enough to run a football team.

HEB does own the rights to the local minor league soccer stadium (Houston Dynamo affiliate). Could be used for football in a pinch but has a capacity of 10k

I tend to agree, but there may be a joker in the deck. This is what I was thinking. I'm sure this is what is being talked about in UTRGV circles as well.

If there is such a plan no one appears to have seen it. I haven’t seen a single source who has reported that there’s there is any kind of plan realistic or otherwise in place to do anything other than sponsor FCS football.

I tend to agree, but there may be a joker in the deck. That is if there is a well-conceived, realistic plan to quickly (I would consider that to be within 5 years) make a move to FBS for the WAC, it would change the dynamics, and it would essentially be a move to FBS with a planned short stay in FCS for UTRGV.

If there is such a plan no one appears to have seen it. I haven’t seen a single source who has reported that there’s there is any kind of plan realistic or otherwise in place to do anything other than sponsor FCS football.

There has been talk of FBS in semi-official statements. Most notably, when Dixie State and Tarleton were added there were several comments about a long term goal of FBS. More recently, in an interview NMSU's AD made the statement that if FBS were a part of the plan, that would be good. He said that in the context that he could not talk about specifics. His history has been that he doesn't drop those kind of hints unless there is something in the works. It doesn't necessarily mean it will come to fruition, but it is pretty strong indication that there is at least some consideration of it.

Ok. I knew about the NMSU AD’s comment but I didn’t take it as anything more than his hope for the future.
