The article says four figures. Even if it is $9999, then that is remarkably cheap and the (maybe, someday) Guardians will easily pay more in legal fees.

The team should’ve dotted every I and crossed every T prior to moving on with their big unveiling with Tom Hanks narrating the video. And this practically nonexistent roller derby team deserves to get paid, but if they dig and hold it ransom for an ungodly sum then shame on them. Thousands in cash, thousands in merchandise and maybe some season tickets should’ve been enough to get it done.

Maybe I’ll prove wrong but I doubt this is a big deal. It’s a roller derby team!! What judge would rule that people would confuse the MLB with a roller derby team from Parma. Remember the St.Louis football Cardinals and the New York football Giants.

That's how I feel. If anything this helps the roller derby team because people actually know they exist now. Remember Guardians was one of the top purposed names for months. You know what you never saw a writer say? Or a fan in the comments section say? "What about the roller derby team!?'

Burden, I had mentioned the Cardinals and Giants earlier, as they are two of the more recent and well-known examples. But, earlier in the century there were even more. There were Senators, Yankees and even Indians football and baseball teams operating at the same time in the city. There may have been even more. The point is that teams in the same city with the same name is not unprecedented at all.

Yeah, but this was before big merchandising dollars and major strides in trademark law that has taken place since the 1920s where Babe Ruth couldn't get money off of Baby Ruth, a candy developed to make money off of Babe's fame.

RE: OT: New Name for Indians
I think you guys are under estimating the might of the Cleveland Guardians. As of this posting they have a staggering 3473 followers on Facebook. Which is probably 3000 more than they had at this time last year. But they do have such big brand power that if you search for Cleveland Guardians on Facebook they don't pop up. You have to specify Cleveland Guardians roller derby.
I don't see how this benefits the derby team. They haven't played the last two years and dont play again until potentially next summer. So it's not drumming up publicity for their games/meets/races whatever it is called.

$$$.
IMO, the Indians were stupid for not making a reasonable low 6 digit offer because now they'll spend that kind of dough on lawyers. The Guardians will probably get that, but a large chunk will be sucked off by lawyers. The only winners here are lawyers.

The baseball team did make an offer but neither side has said how much. If I was the baseball team I would come out and say how much the offer was. Well as long as it was a fair offer. I'd agree with you on the low six figure side. That would be a huge boon for a nonprofit that runs off of donations.

The article said it was four digits, so between $1000 and $9999. Too low. Now the lawyers will make money.

The Cardinals moved from Chicago to St Louis in 1960 and were there until 1987. That’s well after the Babe Ruth era. I kind of thing the Indians lawyers feel giving a roller derby team a 100,000+ dollars would be unnecessary. Spend it on an outfielder. Speaking of which I happened to get teamed up with the San Francisco Giant co-hitting coach on the golf course in Phoenix yesterday. He said the Guardians (or whatever) asked to interview him for their hitting coach opening but the Giants refused since it was a lateral move. Too bad, the Giants won 107 last year. If the Guardians need anything it’s a hitting coach. In April it was Danny Granger and now in October the Giants hitting coach. I’m on a roll on the golf course.

My guess would be that an organization the size of an MLB team already has lawyers on the payroll.

My point is that merchandising has gotten more important and I was using the Babe Ruth time as an example, not a clear point in time when the law changed. This mostly has to do with listening to a Babe Ruth book on the long commute last month.
The Indians need better hitters. I really don’t think there are position players that aren’t meeting their potential; they just aren’t necessarily all that great (except for Jose Rameriz).

Sure, I guess it becomes a make-work project to keep them busy during the lockout that is coming after the World Series.

I would bet that, a day before the announcement, the entire Cleveland Guardians Roller Derby team could have been bought for $5,000. No matches schedule, no ticket sales, no arena, no employees. The day after the announcement, any lawyer wouldn't let the name go for less than $100,000

No Court or arbitrator would award the roller derby team any real money.

For everybody that loves to dump on the Guardians I just want to let you know when they opened their team shop this morning to sell the first Guardian paraphernalia a sign fell and almost hit a customer. Nobody got hurt but have some fun.

I bet no retail store has never been happier that there wasn't a line of people waiting to get in...

Yeah, if a tree falls in a forest, does someone hear it? Honestly, I'm getting past the name, but I don't see much in the merchandise that I would want to own. The frickin logo looks like something from an 80s Marvel TV movie and most of the rest looks like any Indians merch I might already own.
I'd rather buy some new Kent T-shirts or sweatshirts. Both my Kent Sweatshirts are getting a little beat up.
