1) The number of schools within the AAC and MWC that are ready to go P5 candidates. There are quite a few of them.

2) Service academies and BYU are brands that you want along for the ride.

3) The promotion regulation function the G5 has served. Rice sliding down to a lower rated CUSA over time while UCF has moved up to the AAC. The G5 is a good developmental tier for the P5.

4) The size of universities in the G5 and the crossover fans for P5 games it brings.

They believe if the P5 sheds the G5 there will be more money and better recruiting for their programs. It’s funny, but when you read the loudest advocates for the end of the G5 it often comes from schools whose football teams are middle to bottom tier.

The second point I make, people are a lot more snobbish about football than hoops. Generally speaking, people love to see it when a school like Evansville best Kentucky last year. In football? Absolutely not. G5 schools, to them, don’t deserve to trade helmet paint with the regal groups of schools.

.

With 7 non-P5 teams in the Top 25, it ain't no jive - "the G5 is the G Thrive!"

I agree with this strongly. Well put, C-Ave.

RE: Looking at G5s deep into the future
The G5 is benefiting from the fact that there simply aren’t that many G5 vs P5 games this season with the PAC 12, Big Ten, and SEC not playing any and the ACC and Big 12 only playing 1 apiece.

Normally, there would be dozens of these type of games but this year there are only 15 at the max.

That is a(n) hypothesis, but it overlooks the fact that there were seven non-P5 teams in the Final AP top 25 last season.

What we're seeing in week 9 of 2020 is exactly that - - seven non-P5 teams in the AP top 25.

That's a fairly consistent pattern, wouldn't you agree?

I would think we need a few more seasons of this type performance to call it a consistent pattern, Jed. But it is encouraging for the G5.

I can gladly go along with that description.

Yet, one could say, at least, that the pattern is not inconsistent...
