Ayanna Pressley: 'Roots of policing' linked to slave patrols
Quote:Ayanna Pressley said the "roots of policing" are "inextricably linked" to the slave patrols of the pre-Civil War United States.
“The roots of policing are inextricably linked to the antebellum slave patrols of the South that led to the establishment of all-white police departments, and since the Fugitive Slave Act, criminal law enforcement has meant the subjugation and dehumanization of black lives," the freshman congresswoman said at a House hearing.
The hearing, held by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, was meant to address "the presence of white supremacists in local police departments."
"After the Civil War, police departments and local governments throughout the country were saturated with Klu Klux Klan members and sympathizers who refused to intervene in their campaign of terror, and by the early 20th century, the KKK had over 1 million members," Pressley told the committee.
The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 made the federal government responsible for locating and returning fugitive slaves, required local law enforcement to assist in the capture of slaves, and made assisting fugitive slaves a crime.
Pressley supports defunding police and has said the movement is "about true reparations."
“Why are we deploying the police when there is an individual who’s battling mental illness? We should be deploying a mental health clinician,” Pressley told Time magazine. “Why are our police officers administering Narcan, when we should be investing in on-demand treatment, substance use, and culturally competent care?”
Link
Yes, just look how people like Dr. Ben Carson and other blacks that worked hard to get where they are have been subjugated and dehumanized. Liberal blacks are at the front of and perpetuate the idea of victim-hood to control their own people. It's as disgusting as Rep. Pressley is.

RE: Ayanna Pressley: 'Roots of policing' linked to slave patrols
What happens when someone with mental illness (not in a facility) goes bananas on a mental health clinician in broad public? Police will be needed.
This is not negating any argument to police reform. This is an argument against defunding police.
Idk what the origins of police are, but I do know police today do one hell of a job keeping 99.99999% of every single person in this country safe.
Also, I don't understand one bit what point is trying to be made with use of Narcan by police. I'm surprised we offer it as much as we do TBH, but hey they are saving lives. What is on-demand treatment? Put a needle back in their arm? Dear lord. Some people want to change and some don't.

Civilization has had individuals who task it was to enforce laws for centuries before the US was founded. Her education sucked if she really believes this.

Lol policing is as old as civilization, 3000 BC in Egypt had police, same for ancient Rome and Greece.

This. There was no police force before the 19th century?
The Chinese, the Greeks, the Romans, and the Ancient Egyptians (what continent is that?) had a police force thousands of years ago. Heck, there is evidence the pre-colonial Native American Indians had law enforcement, particularly the Incas and the Aztecs, who were notoriously brutal.
These people are narcissists who think everything revolves around their ideas and perceptions, with the belief that they are the only ones in the world who have ever suffered, been exploited or harmed in anyway.

So a racist offers a hateful opinion on history and everyone seems surprised. Don’t be...
Contrary to what the news media and today’s PC culture tries to sell, white folks are not the only ones that can be racist.

What does this wiki piece have to do with current law enforcement?
This is the last sentence in that wiki piece. "During the post-Civil War Reconstruction period of 1865–1877, old-style patrol methods resurfaced and were enforced by postwar Southern police officers and also by organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan".

Provide a solution. You cry foul and then provide zero solutions. Low resolution thinking and a waste of time.
If there are enough mental health clinicians to accompany police on calls go for it. Probably not, so sounds like a possible solution is to provide more funding to train police in these areas. If you can argue against that then do so and maybe we can find a real solution.
If a law is being broken, a law is being broken. Some looney is in a hotel/mall/school/public space stabbing people. Send in the mental health clinicians?
Provide relevant solutions to a problem or stop talking. Defunding police is not a solution to anything.

I know that wasn't directed at me; however, I was thinking that since EVERYTHING these days is blamed on mental issues, maybe reopening some Psychiatric hospitals may help? I know they had their issues back in the day but maybe we would have learned from that going forward. Just a thought......

I'm not talking about education, I'm talking full blown psychiatric insitutions. IMO, there needs to be a place for these people. They went away apparently due to misdeeds, new drugs, and budget cuts.

I haven't studied enough to be for or against psychiatric institutions.
They seem to generally have a bad rep mostly due to some disgusting practices throughout history. Mental health is a hardline to draw as well.
IMO, everyone could technically be considered to have a mental health issue weather is a bit of social anxiety or over confidence/narcistic characteristics. Hell many people in jail today seem to suffer from more sever mental health disorders, but they broke the law.
I guess if we drew a clear line of those with mental health to identify those that endanger others it maybe something to look into. Definitely would need a lot of supervision of the practices at those institutions since many of the people are vulnerable to be taken advantage of. I really don't think I would be for gov't deciding any of this though. Even family members deciding for each other and private psychiatric institutions seems to be a risky proposition.
These are very complicated problems where "Defund the Police" plays no part in resolving issues. If I have gotten anything from the left, the police force needs on hands help either by mental health clinicians (this would be expanding the police force) or more training in that area. Sounds like the opposite of defund to me. The best I can think of now to appease both sides is increasing spending to add another unit to police, fire, and EMT. Police accompany fire and EMT in most situations to begin with anyway and could do the same with this new unit and vice versa.
@Dynamos...the reason "Defunding" plays no part is because many legitimately mean defund to the point where police are endangered or do not exist whatsoever.

The problem is that the same people who want to take away funding do not understand that they need to change the expectations of what they want from the policy - See Minneapolis City Council
