RE: Other games (like we have one), 9/26
I am seeing a lot of Liberty, G South & UMass on ESPN II while at the gym today. Some solid brand building, especially LU defeating an ACC team.
A little at a time, LU seems in place playing JMU's peers.

Not sure I’d call the Umass decision to not play then to play and get trounced brand building. They should have known they stood no chance because they wouldn’t have in a normal season with training camp and games leading up to Georgia Southern. I guess they either needed some money or gave in to some alumni pressure to participate in Fall football.

Don't disagree with your well informed sports fan technical points....but, many avg joe sport fans that did not watch or care about the score did see the UMass logo on national television on a TV next to the Auburn-USC-SEC game and that is branding.

I respectfully disagree. They were playing Georgia southern not Georgia so for average Joe Fan the game had little cache and if average fan watched or saw the final it was an embarrassing 41-0 loss for the Minutemen. They even showed a highlight at the end of the 1AA championship game when Umass beat Georgia Southern and the announcer said it was the biggest win in school history. Average joe fan probably couldn’t discern that the two teams are now FBS one with the Sun Belt and one Independent.

You may be right.
My wife does not understand the rules of football and does not know the difference between d1aa and 1a. She did notice and comment yesterday that she saw "LU playing on TV against a team that UVa plays,"...positive surface perception.
This is the opposite of when she makes comments like, "who are they playing, Harrisonburg High School" when I ask if she wants to go to a JMU game with me...not so good surface perception.
I think this board gets caught up in whether or not good fcs teams are on par with average g5 teams. That is probably true...
Branding is about perception. Kroger brand rice chex are as good as Kellogg Rice Chex but a lot of people buy the Kellogg brand based on perception.

Do you believe UMass and Liberty have a better brand than JMU?

Are we isolating football brand?
LU's brand is trending up, nobody remembets LU did not win much at the 1aa level
UMass, struggling because in NE, nobody remembers or offets creditfor a 1aa NC.
JMU can't trend up even by winning NCs

Liberty will probably be ranked in the AP top 25 today, something we’ve never done. Their football brand is absolutely better than ours.

From what I hear, south west va is jumping on the LU band wagon. I see LU's brand growing. Having a stated goal does not ensure success but it sure beats the nebulous crap we get like "winning" and "excellence" is our goal.

Ok I was wrong, but they are receiving votes. Coastal Carolina made their first top 25 appearance. Our peers have long passed us.

Liberty is doing a nice job with their flagship sports- football men’s basketball. I was really commenting on Umass- dumpster fire.
JMU is different- I’m an FBS guy. I just understand both sides of it and I think it makes sense to point out when a team who is FBS probably made the wrong decisions for them and when their brand is dog poo the same way it’s important to point to the few schools who have done it right. I have no doubt JMU would be among those few but I’m not going to have people make us feel inferior to crappy or non existent programs no matter what division or conference they play in. JMU is better than those programs and it isn’t debatable. Getting trounced on National tv is damaging to someone’s brand. It’s one thing to have an opportunity but if you don’t show up or don’t capitalize on it you quickly become a punchline.

We have simply not monitored the situation long enough. We need another decade or two of monitoring before making the jump.
What are the odds that Bridgewater will be playing Clemson before we finally don a pair of big boy britches?

I laughed at that. The Liberty at VA Tech game in 2 weeks will be big, especially if Liberty beats Southern Miss on Saturday as expected and is undefeated and in the Top 25 or just about there.
If Liberty can do this, there is no doubt that we can do it too. Will be interesting to see if they build off this for the next few years and if they get into the Sun Belt.
They just beat ACC Syracuse easily.
The poll that I saw today had them ranked about 30.

Dukester said it and Dukester was was right, JMU will never be 1A under the KBA admin. Elon is our rival, at least until Elon jumps to 1A without JMU having seen it coming a la GMU, ODU, VCU and Richmond.

I want JMU to go FBS as much as anyone, but Liberty really sold its soul when it hired Hugh Freeze. Clearly, he knows football. But he brings some serious off field baggage and I am not sure even a top 25 ranking is worth that.

I personally thought the person they hired as AD was far worse. He helped cover up some terrible things at Baylor...but hey, top 25 votes and exposure!!!

All 5 of Liberty's together have a combined record of 2-17. Yes it is nice that they are getting some notoriety, but they arent exactly world beaters this year

ESPN put Liberty into their Power 25 ranking for week 7:
https://www.espn.com/college-football/st...ngs-week-7
25. Liberty Flames (5-0)
BYU isn't the only school playing as an independent this season making some noise. Hugh Freeze's Flames are 5-0 after winning 38-21 at Syracuse on Saturday, the first win over an ACC opponent in Liberty school history. Freeze led Liberty to eight wins a year ago in his first season as head coach, and the Flames could be on their way to matching or even surpassing that total this season. They still have some of their most challenging games upcoming against Virginia Tech, North Carolina State and Coastal Carolina, all on the road.
Up next: vs. Southern Miss (Saturday, 1 p.m. ET, ESPN3)
