the good news is that the collaboration between the NBA, the players association and Yale Medical has produced a new test that only requires saliva and little to no chemicals to process. this test is far easier to administer, much cheaper and less reliant on chemicals. it could greatly expand testing capacity and access. so, if (and it's a frustratingly big if) there's resources in place to track and trace positives it will become much easier to identify carriers and control spread. Since, we may need to live with COVID for a while longer, it's crucial to have functioning systems to track where it is, and isn't, spreading through the population. with that, you can resume some careful group and social functions.

Problem at UNC was off campus parties that the University had no control over. Now everybody there

lots of college cases traced to frats so far. people don't seem to get that this is disease that spreads by close contact. outdoor activities are pretty safe. people widely spread out in large indoor spaces is pretty safe. singing in church without a mask is not safe. eating in a crowded restaurant is not safe. sitting in a full classroom is not safe. working in tight quarters is not safe. living in crowded housing is not safe. unfortunately, the national response seems to be only partially based on real risk. where i live restaurants are open, churches are having indoor services, planes fly in and out, people are working inside around co-workers without masks (even at the Dept of Health), but hiking trails are closed. parks are off limits, cops are giving $1000 citations to poor people sitting around drinking beer with a couple friends outside while people with money gather in big groups unmasked inside restaurants. there's a short term financial interest clouding the short term health and long term financial reality.

Michigan State University will conduct the fall semester as online-only instruction, its president announced Tuesday afternoon, days before students were set to move in for the fall.

"Given the current status of the virus in our country — particularly what we are seeing at other institutions as they repopulate their campus communities — it has become evident to me that, despite our best efforts and strong planning, it is unlikely we can prevent widespread transmission of COVID-19 between students if our undergraduates return to campus," President Samuel Stanley said in a letter to students. Miami-Dade all indoor dining is closed. Beaches, parks are opened. Church services are online. Open container laws in effect. Restaurants violating outdoor and alcohol restrictions get $15,000 fine and
24 hour shutdown. People with money have private chefs.

We now RV full-time and spend a vast majority of our time enjoying the great outdoors (as the Unicat only has ~125 sq ft of living space — think cabin fever). It is absolutely ludicrous to require people to wear masks outdoors under those circumstances, not that common sense prevails in most circumstances that the government sticks their (mask-covered) noses into.

Thanks for taking the time (and no, I didn't subject myself to the whole thing). Biden did indeed say that every American should be mandated to wear a mask every time he or she goes outside. I support precautions, but that proposal is ridiculously broad.
