However, a rivalry has to be a two way street. Maybe if USF started winning something then it could be considered.

UC and Memphis have been rivals in about 20 conferences since the days of the dinosaurs. Had two competitive, exciting games for the league title last year. When we hand their a$$es back to them this season, then that is what a big rivalry is.

No, I want to keep spanking that ass! Especially since were 1 win from evening up the series.

If UC keeps competing with us for divisional titles I can see a rivalry developing there. Memphis probably would be if they ever beat us.

6-5 USF in football, FYI

OK, when's the last time USF won?

Miami U still technically leads the series with UC, but they haven't beat us in about 35 years, so we don't even really consider it a rivalry anymore.

LOL 2016. You act like it's been a decade or something. The losing streak coincides perfectly with the Charlie Strong mistake era at USF.

That's right. I forgot about UCF's penchant for 0-12 seasons.

RE: Is UCF-usf the biggest rivalry in the conference?
There are long time rivals and rivals the evolve/move on. For example UCF had former rivalries with ECU and Tulsa in the C-USA days but neither has been really a rival in the AAC. I hear many say Tulsa-Houston but to me Houston vs Memphis is the biggest rivalry (in football) in the west division and second largest conference rivalry after UCF vs USF.

Given recent years I would say that UCF vs Memphis is another football rivalry... 4 games in 2 yrs, 3 of which were close and 2 were come from behind wins for UCF. If Memphis and Cincy can meet several years in a row it could become a rivalry too with conference/NY6 implications like it was in 2019. Speaking of Cincy with UCF and Cincy splitting 2018 and 2019, it has the makings of a bidding rivalry.

It takes more than just a couple games to make a rivalry. Football moves in cycles. The way that USC and Notre Dame play these days you wouldn't assume they were rivals, but back in 2004-2010 you would have said they were bitter foes. The thing that really makes rivalries is a long history of competitive match ups and shared recruiting territory. That's why, as much as I like the history with ECU / UCF that Tulsa has, I wouldn't call them 'rivals' like I would SMU, Houston, or even Navy. We recruit against them much more frequently.

Yeah it takes consistency and special circumstances. For instance, if Houston had continued to compete for the West, and Tulsa was their only division loss every year, even if if Tulsa stays bad that becomes a rivalry.

Give it time. If our conference stays together long enough, we'll develop some pretty solid hatred.

As someone said above, it’s not about just the games played, it’s about the pure hatred between teams/fanbases. Tulsa and Houston don’t hate each other or judge their seasons off of if they beat the other one. UCF-usf is the only nasty rivalry in the conference.

no one will mention this but ecu/ucf is likely number #2, ecu has gone completely trash in all sports, but ucf vs ecu used to be toxic when both were decent

Tulsa Wichita is likely #3

tulsa houston isnt a thing at all..houstons "maintained" match-ups as we go division-less is memphis and smu

memphis-cincy dont play enough in football--never good at the same time in basketball
houston-smu have never been good at the same time in any sport so not much fuel there
smu/navy is not a rivalry-- its a trophy game . i consider it more a tradition than rivalry

Houston/Navy is constantly put on rivalry week..the conference/network want it to be a rivaly because it draws numbers but its not

houston/cincy in basketball..houston/memphis in football is budding but to young to call it a rivalry
Thank you. I don’t understand how it’s so hard to grasp that UCF usf is really the only nationally relevant rivalry in the conference.

Do we even have any other nationally recognized rivalries. I’m trying my best not to be biased but it’s not even close to me. And the numbers back me up

RE: Is UCF-usf the biggest rivalry in the conference?
UCF vs USF wins hands down. I’d like the see the Cincinnati vs Memphis gain some intensity. UCF also has a decent rivalry with ECU.

It would be nice to see SMU vs Houston but this is a tricky one because despite the fact that they haven’t shared a conference since 2000, the Mustangs consider their biggest rival to be TCU.

The private schools need to get something going. Green Wave vs Golden Hurricane—can we create a Perfect Storm Trophy or something?

Navy vs SMU is a joke rivalry like the Civil Conflict—one side wants it to be a rivalry. Navy is just too polite to tell them they don’t care about the game or the trophy.

Proximity to could build a rivalry between Navy and Temple. The largest US wooden warship was the USS Pennsylvania—they could exchange a replica of the ship or something.

HEY! Don't disrespect the Civil ConFLiCT like that. We are replacing the game with the Bulls this season and playing UCONN during rivalry week. Finally a game worth our time

thats taking it a bit far..navy wants it just as much as smu...its not a rivalry but mutually beneficial

navy needs strong texas ties, as texas/southern recruits are more likely to be willing to join the military than the more liberal east (where navy is located)..thats why navy was in the west division. the smu/navy "rivalry" is a recruiting point for navy..

i noted earlier it more a tradition than a rivalry but it's definitely not one sided in their desire to keep it going
