RE: What if????
If they get paid, they are professionals. They can then pay for their own college. And if college sports are supposed to be amateur, they cant have it both ways. Go to the NFL, NBA, MLB, MLS, WNBA etc and get paid. Otherwise, enjoy your time playing a sport you love, getting a free college education, the experience of a lifetime, and now... a COA stipend too.

Until the NFL gets rid of the 3 year rule, college is the minor leagues for the NFL.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but there is one thing that bugs me. Colleges need to stop just paying lip service to amateurism/STUDENT Athlete portion of this arrangement. It makes it much harder for them to make their argument when there are situations like what took place at UNC, or when athletes are being funneled into degree programs that seemingly only exist as a pathway to keep athletes on the field. Further, they need to only accept athletes that are willing and able to actually be students at their university. Once you accomplish that, it is a heck of a lot easier to argue that you are providing an educational scholarship that has a value beyond anything that would be paid to these athletes. As things stand now, many elite athletes don't think they are students. They think they are part of a sports academy that they are required to attend based on pro league rules. They are bitter about that, because they aren't there for an education. We need to purge college athletics of the kids who are only using college sports as a farm league. If colleges stop providing that, the pro sports leagues will figure out how to handle those elite talents.

I fully support getting rid of the rule. If a kid has what it takes to go pro in tenth grade and a team is willing to pay them enough to entice them to sign up. Go ahead. We shouldn't stop anyone from an opportunity to go pro. If a team wants to sign them, more power to them. One of the things that was better about FCS was you didnt have to deal with this semi-pro mess and most of the teams were in the same realm budget wise.

That's pretty ******* rich for message board that has quarterly meltdowns when our sports teams don't achieve our pre-conceived notions.
For context (and hypocrisy) consider this post stating that when competing for elite athletes, last place is unacceptable.

BIG FACTS
Which might not be great for us, but is great for the conference. We need to lock CUSA in as the third best G5 conference. Lately we've been the worst. Thats unacceptable.

What does success on the court have to do with the NCAA as a whole honoring its mission of fostering the educational and athletic growth of its student athletes? Do you disagree with my take? Do you think that athletes should not go to class, and we should only pretend that they are student athletes? Do you think universities should continue to fail so many of these kids?
I didn't insinuate this should be about participation trophies and just enjoying watching kids get a chance to have some fun. It can be highly competitive and still be done in a way that honors the missions of an educational institution, and when it is, there will be real value for both the student athletes and the institutions. As a result, I imagine all this bickering over compensation would disappear as well.

On a sports message board? Everything. Consider the number of posts bemoaning ODU dropping in the USNWR rankings vs those calling for JJ's head for losing in the first round of the NCAAs.

I think most athletes at ODU attend class, and the few who don't uphold that obligation are let go when they fail their classes. In following players over years on twitter I see those that go on to sports careers, those that work within their major fields, and those that do very little. We all make choices, and often we can't lay those choices at the feet of others.

We can all have white-picket fences and our stay-at-home wives will have dinner on the table promptly at six, and we'll cheer when Gene Hackman leads our Hoosiers to victory.

Not a word of this makes sense. Did you start the Northam 10pm challenge early today?
And let me clarify, since you took it upon yourself to put words into my mouth. I am not referring to ODU level athletes. I am pretty sure that was obvious, but I believe the kids who play at ODU are student athletes. It is the one and dones, and the ones who think they are that I am referring to.

The dichotomy between the "haves and have-nots" at FCS was/is fairly large.
It was better for us certainly at FCS because we were at the top of the heap budget wise. In fact I believe that JMU and ODU were at or near 1 and 2 in all of FCS every year.
JMU now leads FCS going away, and only a handfull of FCS programs have even close to the budget of JMU.
https://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/finances/
Although some of these numbers may be questionable, take a look at the the difference of just the top 25 football revenues at FCS. There is a substantial gap between the top and bottom of this list, and there are a total of 127 FCS football programs.

I may have conflated Wood's comments with an expectation of a CUSA announcement from Judy.
