I think the administration needs to give Kenny Payne a look.

I've been seeing the coach at UNCAsheville listed by several media members. I like his ties to the region, but his record is rough.

I say all in on Darrin Horn from NKU. If not, then I wouldn’t mind seeing Shay get his shot.

He has been a head coach two years, (was with Smart at both VCU and Texas)
He went 4-27 first year and 15-16 2nd year.
He took over a program that had 3 straight 20+ win seasons
and got the former coach the Middle Tennessee State Job.
I don't know what happened but it looks like he had almost
complete roster turnover. I looked at a Box score from each season
and only saw 1 name in both.

I know I tossed his name out earlier but if we move away from Shay I would rather have a bigger splash.

I hadn't heard that name before, so I thought I would look him up. He is 53 and makes $900,000 a year at UK and apparently is highly considered at for his ability to coach up bigs. It seems unlikely that he would be considered or that he would be interested.

SoCon John with a few candidates inside a well written article here:

soconhoopsreport.blogspot.com/

I like the SEC assistants mentioned while adding a couple more in Kim English and Rob Lanier. Also current NMSU HC Chris Jans is another name I've seen mentioned in a few locations

Pat Kelsey would be a huge get, not sure why he wouldn't hold out for a P-5 job, but ETSU could increase his salary and the SoCon is a better conference than the Big South.. Excellent fan engagement and his up-tempo style of play would be fun to watch, and he's proven he can recruit.

Agree Mountaineer, Kelsey is a proven coach who could get it done here.

Got to love Kelsey's energy for sure

Jans and Forbes had overlap in Idaho in the early 2000's I'd love to get his take on who it should be.

RE: New Head Coaching Search/Hire Thread
Kelsey had the weird situation with the UMass job a few years ago. He could’ve made a lot more money there than we could give him. He’s probably one or two good seasons away at Winthrop from bumping up into the next level. Coming to ETSU wouldn’t be a big enough step up to justify the move in my opinion. I would also be concerned that he’d be gone in 2 years and we’d end up right where we are now.

But, really, aren’t we always going to be in this position? ETSU is not a destination job. It is proving ground and will likely remain that for the foreseeable future. I understand we had Forbes for 5 years and really feel like we were pretty lucky. When he arrived I had him pegged for about 3 years.
As for Kelsey in particular, I do agree that we are not a big enough step up from his current position...a step up to be sure, but not a big enough one to make a change at this point. He has already been in discussions for other, bigger jobs. I would think he would ride this Covid-19 thing out, have a successful next season and move on from where he is now.

I think Forbes would still stick with Shay. Jans' career and success sure does resemble Forbes' though. But Jans comes with some old baggage, far worse than Forbes' show cause. If it is seriously down to these two, for me Shay is the one.

Interesting, this isn't even a discussion thread on the New Mexico State forum. No mention at all that I could find.

That is the reality. I just think Kelsey is primed and ready for a big jump more than a P5 assistant would be. We would hopefully expect to get more mileage out of a new hire than 2 seasons.

Interesting, this isn't even a discussion thread on the New Mexico State forum. No mention at all that I could find.

Likewise there is zero discussion on Volnation (other than Forbes being hired by WF), and those people love to talk. Thinking maybe no UT assistants are in play. Or this whole search is being very well tight-lipped and leak free.

RE: New Head Coaching Search/Hire Thread
It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Best case is Shay gets the job, keeps the team (mostly) together
we have another great year and he is able to reload like Forbes did.

It comes down to how well Shay can recruit, if he can't might as well teardown it down now and let a new coach
start rebuilding now.

A lot of the fanbase is going to get mad if they take a step back next year no matter who the coach is, need to worry about the long term.

Wow this is tough waiting for our new coach. All the names mentioned above have a lot of positives. I do not know who I support right now but have to trust Noland, Carter and Sander. Hopefully they will get us a great one. Does anyone know the timetable we are on to hire?
