Kenny Hawkins mentioned Jason Shay, Chris Jans, Mike Morrell, and Barclay Radebaugh as candidates. Shay seems to be front runner.

I know Radebaugh is an ETSU guy but his career record is 207-256. If we’re honestly considering him as an option they should just call up Murry to see when he can get back to JC.. No Morrell please. Let’s just send Shay the paperwork to sign right now if those are the options. I still think Jans’ agent is just trying to get him a raise but if he wants to bring his talents to JC that would be just fine.

Again, no idea where people are getting their info. Which is why I mostly think it's just rumors.

Didn’t realize the WAC was in such shambles with NMSU Athletics caught up in a mess.

I have to agree with this 100%. Surely a top 40 mid major program can attract better candidates than that. I realize Jans is a long shot but we have to aim higher than the other two besides Shay. If all we have are those three then of course it is Shay. But surely some fine coaches out there have to be interested in the job. Surely.

Well I gave the money back. What is up with this? Am I looking at this wrong? Jans fired. Barker fired. Is there a pattern here?

As he should be in that group. Not an impressive pool of candidates, actually not an acceptable pool of candidates.

Is the pressure to follow Forbes winning tradition here a turn off for applicants? Seat too hot on arrival in Johnson City?

I don't think Morell and Raudebaugh are actual candidates. They are just digging up old candidates from last time. I'd Chris Jans rumors are pretty solid considering Hoop Dirt reported on them.

Yes those CANNOT be all the candidates. Just assistants from P-6 schools should make for a fairly impressive list.

Why are no Power 5 assistants being mentioned? Micheal Schwatz, Kim English, Greg Heiar, Luke Murray, Mike Miller? All make in the $300,000-350,000 range aside from Miller, so he's probably a stretch. I'd love to see Murray's name in connection with the job, he was the #3 recruiter in 2019 according to 24/7 sports, he's coached under Sean Miller, Dan Hurley, and Chris Mack, plus Bill Murray would be coming to ETSU games..

NMSU's Chris Jans receiving interest from East Tennessee State
Justin Martinez, Las Cruces Sun-NewsPublished 6:41 p.m. MT May 4, 2020 | Updated 6:43 p.m. MT May 4, 2020

LAS CRUCES – Sources within New Mexico State confirmed to the Las Cruces Sun-News on Monday that Aggies head coach Chris Jans is receiving interest for the head coaching position at East Tennessee State.

The Buccaneers are in search of a new man to take the helm after Steve Forbes accepted the head coaching spot at Wake Forest last Thursday. ETSU's interim coach, Jason Shay, is also said to be in contention for the position.

Hero Sports initially listed Jans as a candidate, while KTSM's Colin Deaver was the first local reporter to receive confirmation.

Jans is entering his fourth season as New Mexico State's shot caller. He boasts an 83-17 record during that stretch and is the three-time WAC Coach of the Year.

The Fairbank, Iowa, native is currently on a contract that runs through the 2022-2023 season with an annual base salary of $290,000 and a yearly retention bonus of $216,000.

ETSU is in a position to offer a significant raise for Jans' services. For context, Forbes agreed to a deal with the Buccaneers in 2018 that featured an annual base salary of $400,000 and a yearly retention bonus of $200,000.

The team went 30-4 (16-2 Southern Conference) last season and booked its ticket to the NCAA tournament for the second time in the last four years.

Have been wondering the same thing. Of course it's obvious who my 1st choice would be.

I like how multiple media sources that are linked to New Mexico St/WAC conference are confirming that Chris Jans is in the mix at ETSU... Meanwhile the ETSU beat writer is keeping us informed on his 2-year old bloodhound

How do the media sources that have been here for 10+ years not have any contacts within the administration. It's just like when Bartow was fired, a national journalist broke the story instead of anyone local.
