Frankly, I was glad to see so many people without masks. This ain't China!
Based on what I saw today, the people have decided the quarantine is over.

Serious question....
Why would you be glad to see so many people without masks?
Would you similarly be glad to see foodservice workers handling raw chicken without gloves or people sneezing without covering their mouths?
I'm not talking about quarantines or anything else and certainly not about laws..... I'm simply talking about people doing you the common courtesy of 'controlling' their bodily fluids?
There are perhaps some legitimate reasons for your happiness, if you live in a very low contagion area of a state that had mandated masks or something... but if this is just a general comment, I'm confused as to why it would make you glad?
What would make ME glad is to see a lot of people voluntarily doing such simple and 'optional' things so that it (or worse, a lockdown) never needed to be mandated.
Because, personally -- and this is just my opinion -- I think the statistics are out of whack. The chance of getting the disease is low. The chance of having adverse effects from the disease is even lower. The change of death is even lower than those.
I live in Memphis/Shelby County. We're battling it out with Nashville/Davidson County to see who has the most cases. As of now they're ahead by 151 cases, 3,580 to 3,429. So we're not in an area with low confirmed cases. But, we're sitting at 0.35%. That's not even one-half of one percent of the population.
We don't shut down our economy for other diseases. We don't run around wearing masks for prior contagious diseases.
People can control their body fluids on their own.
Wash your hands. But prior to this outbreak people either washed their hands or they didn't We survived the chicken problem.
As it turns out, I'm a (somewhat compulsive) hand-washer. Always have been. To the point that my wife used to joke about it.
USED to joke about. Not any more. :D
I've always used napkins to pick up the salt/pepper shakers at restaurants and paper towels to open the bathroom door. Stupid McDonald's makes me use toilet paper.
I've always turned away and covered my mouth when I sneeze or cough.
But even though I routinely do those things, not everyone else did. And we survived as a society.
Masks are overkill. Or they may not be as effective as some think they are. There are many people who say masks exacerbate the problem while there are others who swear by them.
I went along with shutting everything down and doing the self-quarantine for a bit -- not because I agreed with it, though.
I agree with this statement 110%. I have from day 1 and always have supported the idea that people make individual choices and that what might be a good practice in NYC is not necessary in most of the rest of the country...
I just never understood the 'complaints' about people who choose to be 'cleaner'. Your wife joking, okay... but people calling other people out as 'sheep' or whatever?
Your asides (the chicken problem) aren't real good comparisons to flu-like diseases in terms of the way they spread, but the idea is not wrong. Note however how many laws we have regarding the handling of chicken. If everyone were as careful as you, would we need so many laws to accomplish the same outcomes? I realize these laws currently only really apply to producers, distributors and chefs and not the average person... but it seems self evident that if there were a 'raw chicken pandemic' that they would either remove all the chicken (a shut-down for our safety) or somehow seek to apply those laws to everyone... just like they did here. If however, nobody was really at risk because say 30% of the population was like you anyway (using napkins for public salt shakers) and another 40% would willingly do so if told there was an active issue... maybe they wouldn't need any laws about it in the first place.
Japan is just as crowded as we are, but didn't have to do nearly what we did. Lots of reasons for that... some we would never do... but among them is a social acceptance of, rather than ridicule of, people wearing masks or using napkins to hold salt shakers or technology making things like public restrooms and food service 'cleaner'. That is quite literally all I've ever suggested.... and even if it doesn't work, I fail to see how that would make someone 'compliant' or 'less interested in freedom' or whatever other childish bull**** some people want to sling.

If anything they are liable to lead to more shutdowns in the future because the undeserved sense of safety people wearing them have causing them to be lax on other safety protocols that actually would keep us from being locked down again.
Besides, you and I both know that since the sheep went along so willingly and simply handed their rights away this time around, yourself included, there's going to be future lockdowns just like this regardless if you are wearing a mask that up until a couple weeks ago was a t-shirt you got from the Justin Bieber concert you went to two years ago or not.
If none of it matter, then what's the difference between me doing what I want, and you doing what you want? Isn't that your whole point? Individual liberty (though still under a government)? It certainly is mine. If the goal is to get out from underneath the government, well... I'd say that's much more worked up about it than I am.
I think I have a chance of turning some of that 40%.... because so many of them were hurt by this and won't want to see it again. You don't and that's fine. I've said 100 times, do what you want, and my only complaint has been about 'bullying' (or badmouthing or talking down to) people who choose to make a different decision from yours. How am I 'hurting' you? What's your alternative?
This WHOLE THING started because (I believe it was) Shere started talking about the precedent being set... and how wrong he thought that was, and I agreed, so I made a suggestion as to how to PERHAPS keep that from happening.
You guys talk about people like 'me' falling in line, yet you seem to be the ones accepting your fate (bitching about it, but not doing anything about it) or in some cases, crowing about some fantasy of armed revolution... or at least 'resistance'... which IMO, only makes the government want to come at you harder.
As I said, I don't see many more 'fight the system' candidates on the horizon.... but I DO see tons of 'expand the system' candidates. All I'm trying to do is offer a third option. Make the system less 'necessary' for the goals.
The idea that the government would ever just 'let herd immunity run its course' flies directly in the face of what we've seen... and what some very large portion of the community has accepted.
