RE: Best Rebounders
Anyone who doesn't have Hicks on their (post 1985) top 5 list is just plain wrong. That dude was an absolute beast. He averaged 9.0 his junior year and 9.7 his senior year despite being only 6'6".

His teammate his junior year, NBA player Jason Maxiel, only averaged 7.5.

Hick's senior year UC was a Top 50 rebounding team despite no one on the team being taller than 6'6" with the exception of Kirkland who was a perimeter player and only played half a year.

Thanks for pointing this out. Back in Fortson's days stats weren't nearly a easy to come by. Those are ridiculously insane numbers.

Maybe his conditioning was a problem but I can't believe Huggs never played more minutes and didn't get him more shot attempts.

In comparison, the NCAA's leading scorer took 19.3 shots per game and played 33.7 minutes per game. If you extrapolate Fortson's numbers out to equal that playing time and shots he would have averaged 35 points and 11 rebounds a game.

I consider Fortson to be the best Shoemaker era Bearcat by a pretty wide margin. If he had played as a senior he would have had around 2,500 points and a bunch of rebounds too. He wasn't a plus defender but was the most unstoppable offensive force I've seen. No other player has been on two All American teams 2nd team as a soph and 1st as a junior. People point to Kenyon's POY award but there were HOFers in Fortson's time like Duncan, Pierce. Danny's junior season would probably beat Kenyon's POY season.

He was so good at using his body and had a soft touch. It was very surprising that in the NBA he was used mainly to rebound, set picks, and be a tough guy. He was a bit short for a PF, but he should have been a good offensive pro.

You're the number 1 fortson advocate on here. It's hard to argue against you on this. He was incredible.

RE: Best Rebounders
Danny was so much more than rebounding. I don't know if there was ever a Bearcat better at positioning himself under/around the bucket to receive a pass. Granted, part of that was his body type and leg leverage but he was also athletic for a guy his size. That said, I don't put him up there with others we have mentioned for rebounding because that was complementary to his overall game - it was more of an added bonus IMO. I'll still take Hicks and Martin for imposing their will to grab a board or block a shot.

If we are talking pound for pound, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Bobby Brannen? At 6'7" he avg 8.1 rpg his senior year. I remember him being an absolute workhorse on the glass.

Honorable mention (pound for pound) was Jaquon Parker.

I now this has been discussed many times over, but Dontonio Wingfield could have been an all-time great had he stuck around a few years. He grabbed 260 boards as a true freshman (9 a game), which was the third most in the Great Midwest that year.

Fortson just put his rump into his man and backed him down and banked it in.

Yep, an amazing talent and a troubled life. He could have had his jersey retired had he stayed and developed his amazing natural abilities. And he would have had a long NBA career after that too.

Not to mention that UC would have had multiple years with Wingfield and Fortson on the same team. Add in Art Long. That's a +15 rebound differential team.
