RE: Best Rebounders
You gotta throw Tre Scott in there.

It's much harder these days for one person to grab 10 boards a game. With more 3-point attempts, there's more long rebounds that are essentially 50-50 balls. And everyone is athletic, so there's more competition for each board.

Scott is the first Bearcat to average 10 boards a game since Ed Badger was coach.

Have find some way to move Hicks up. He did man's work always giving up 3-5" to whom he was guarding in the incredibly deep Big East.

RE: Best Rebounders
I remember on the telecast of the NCAA game against UK (Huggins' last game) that Bilas went out of his way to comment that Erik Hicks was "just relentless on the boards".

I also remember the commentators in the '93 NCAA game against UNC being impressed with the yeoman efforts being turned in underneath against Montross by Eric Martin and Curtis Bostic.

So more so than the numbers guys, I like the effort guys.

RE: Best Rebounders
The best rebounders of the past 20-30 years can be compared by the # of rebounds they got. But before that, it was much easier for top rebounders to get higher rebounding totals:

Average rebounds/game by NCAA rebounding leaders, 2020:
13.3 - Kevin Marfo
12.7 - John Mooney
12 - Willie Jackson
11.9 - Cletrell Pope
11.7 - James Butler

Average rebounds/game by NCAA rebounding leaders, 2010:
13.4 - Artsiom Parakhouski
13 - Kenneth Faried
12 - Daniel Emerson
11.8 - Kevin Thompson
11.4 - Chris Gaston

Average rebounds/game by NCAA rebounding leaders, 2000:
14 - Darren Phillip
11.9 - Josh Sankes
11.8 - Larry Abney
11.7 - Shaun Stonerook
10.5 - Jarrett Stephens

Average rebounds/game by NCAA rebounding leaders, 1990:
13.8 - Anthony Bonner
13 - Eric McArthur
12.6 - LaPhonso Ellis
12.6 - Tyrone Hill
12.5 - Lee Campbell

Average rebounds/game by NCAA rebounding leaders, 1980:
15.1 - Larry Smith
15 - Lewis Lloyd
14.4 - Rickey Brown
13.3 - Monti Davis
12.3 - Gary Hooker

Average rebounds/game by NCAA rebounding leaders, 1978: (before 1980, the only years wikipedia lists the top-5 rebounders are 1978 and 1952)
16.2 - Monti Davis
15.7 - Bill Cartwright
15.5 - Lionel Garrett
14.9 - Larry Bird
14.3 - Larry Knight

Average rebounds/game by NCAA rebounding leaders, 1952:
20.9 - Bill Hannon
19.7 - Walter Dukes
19 - Ernie Beck
18.9 - Elston Tuttle
18.2 - Bill Chambers

Hard to compare modern stats vs stats from the 50s and 60s. I have no idea why, but for some reason those old time guys racked up the boards big time. I am not sure why it has changed so much.

It looks like you used to be able to intentionally miss a free throw to one side for an easy rebound, offensive rebounds must have been much much easier in 1952, both on free throws, and lane size. A 7 footer could park himself 3 feet from the basket.

Rule changes history all affecting dominating rebounders:

1955-1956
The two shot penalty in existence for the last 3 minutes of each half is eliminated; the one-and-one free throw exists for the whole game.
1956-1957
The free throw lane is increased from 6 feet to 12 feet.
1956-1957
On the lineup for a free throw, the two spaces adjacent to the end line must be occupied by opponents of the free thrower. In the past, one space was marked 'H' for the home team, and one 'V' for the visitors.

Best Huggins era and beyond rebounders are....in no particular order.....

Kenyon Martin
Eric Hicks
Tre Scott
Dontonio Wingfield
Danny Fortson
Gary Clark

Honorable mention to: Herb Jones, Eric Martin and John Williamson for all averaging in the 7-8 rebound range despite being in the 6'4" range.

I probably put Corie Blount as #2 on that list behind Fortson and just ahead of Kenyon. It was hard for him to get a ton of numbers though because UC limited the number of shot other teams took so well, we turned teams over so much.

Kenyon's senior year opponents averaged 58.8 FGA / game, Blounts senior year opponents averaged 50.1 FGA. Blount also played less minutes than most of those guys do to the pressing. The funny thing is the 92/93 team took more shots than Kenyon's senior year too. Martin and Mickeal were just so good at getting to the foul line it offset a lot of that.

RE: Best Rebounders
Danny Fortson was the best rebounder I saw at UC. You just couldn't move him. If Huggins had needed to play him more minutes he probably gets to double digit rebounds. He never averaged 30 minutes a game.

There were a lot more shots put up in that era and shooting percentage were low.

Fortson's college numbers are kind of insane. He averaged 21.3 points per game his junior year and only took 11.9 shots per game. He shot 62% from the floor and 77% from the line.

Fortson was deadly 8-10 feet from the basket. His junior year, he was our offensive plan... get Fortson the ball.

Connie Dierking was one of UC’s all time great rebounders. He got rebounds out of his area better than any Bearcat in history.

I'm with ya man. He was listed at 6'7" but I'd bet the farm he was a few notches short of 6'6". That guy was an imposing beast. He averaged 9 boards per game his junior year [CUSA] and 9.7 as a Senior [Big East]. Loved that dude under the basket.

i'm going modern era, as caveated on a different list:

1) Danny: Second favorite Bearcat of all time
2) Ken: Able to rebound out of his area really well
3) Corie and Art are neck and neck for me
4) Tre: Have him over Gary because he had less help than Gary
5) Gary Clark: Consistent rebounder year in and year out
6) Max/Hicks: Can't differentiate between the two.

Didn’t Fortson lead the NBA in rebounding for a couple of years? The guy was a force.
