Just off the top of my head Marshall, UNC Charlotte, App State, Arkansas State, Middle Tennessee, WKU, UAB, USA, USM and Louisiana Tech all are in conferences that don't have in-state rivals.

U just named all the teams in our conference... that’s the point.

I should have said “except for our own crappy conference”. I thought that was understood. Arkansas State and App State have horrendous programs. So the point still stands.

The only team in the entire conference that has actually improved their Men’s Basketball program is probably Marshall.

So if the team has a bad bball program in the Sun Belt, they don't count? That's some new level logic right there.

Oh my god. You are right. Sorry. I was trying to say... Every good mid major program has local (usually in state) rivals. That’s the point right, to be worth a damn. Or are we just going to compare our situation with Arkansas State going forward.

They certainly have a lot more in common with us than most A10 schools since they actually have a G5 football program.

Who should we be comparing ourselves to if not CUSA and Sun Belt programs?

We don’t have local conference rivals. Period. Take that as literally as you’d like. If we played in the BIG EAST or the AAC we could live with that. But we don’t. I should have left it there. That’s our biggest problem and it’s a huge fundamental issue.

To me, if ODU thinks it is better than CUSA, we need to dominate it. Otherwise, I feel we are just trying to compete in our league like everyone else has to.

It’s not just about the competition level. We don’t play anyone that the alumni gives a crap about after December. Go ahead and show me another program that doesn’t have a state rival in conference. Especially at the mid major level. It’s one thing to be in a spread out Big East. Every team at our level has local rivals. All of them. Except CUSA. Well at least the Florida and Texas schools have each other. We have nothing.

AAC: Everyone except Houston/SMU and UCF/USF
Atlantic 10: Dayton, St. Louis, Rhode Island, UMass, Davidson (George Washington technically qualifies but their proximity to George Mason excuses them).
CAA: Charleston, Northeastern, Hofstra, Towson (Drexel and Delaware are in different states but the same metro so they won't count)
Missouri Valley: Missouri State
Sun Belt: Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina
West Coast: Portland

I'm not sure what you think our level is but by any standard ODU is definitely NOT the only team among its peers not to have local rivals.

And that's not going to change with a move up unless it's to the A10, and at 14 teams they aren't any more likely to expand than CUSA. I know some people here fantasize about returning to the CAA, but JMU and W&M are the only schools most people would give a crap about and we play them all the time anyway.

We would all love to be in the A10, the Big East or the AAC for obvious reasons. But we aren’t. We have to travel half the country to play nobody. Those teams you listed are playing good quality competition.

Portland, Appy St and Coastal Carolina all stink. MO State and Charleston and St Louis are probably the best examples. But at least the CAA is all on the east coast and the Missouri Valley is all Midwest. The A10 is mostly between New York and Richmond. Totally different than what we are dealing with. We are just the Junior Varsity squad to the AAC (The original CUSA). We are very similar to them geographically but at least those programs have name recognition and fans can get excited for the games.

We are fighting a losing battle and I don’t see it getting any better. Our only hope is for the football program to take off.

Well, we had playing time to offer, a former NBA forward to work with, and, with him, we would be pretty good next year. Made the tournament 2 years ago. We play in a nicer building, though probably not that much nicer than Prov Civic Center. So, what's the difference?

1. He's a Philly kid with a NE mindset. Maybe
2. Providence is Big East, means GU, Villanova, St. John's, Xavier and a whole bunch more. TV all the time, NY city. Way more exposure. We're stu-gotz, a total **** league with no traditional rivalries, a flight and 2 wagon-train rides to Bowling Green, KY or El Paso. No TV to speak of.

CUSA kills us. Why can't we get 1kid from the DC Catholic League? We have an alum coaching at DeMatha who hasn't sent one kid -- not one -- our way. Hell, Morgan Wooten sent us 2 in one year. A kid we offered from DC's Carroll HS, 6-11, just committed to LaSalle. It's disgusting.
Don't tell me this is all on Jones, cause I don't believe that. He may not be a great recruiter, may not play all the silly games with HS coaches and parents and AAU types, but we have a lot to offer and I am sure he does a good job selling the school.
I have heard from a very reliable source that the league kills us with the kids we most want to, and should be recruiting.\
My .02.

CUSA has definitely underachieved in basketball, but if it were that much of a dealbreaker then we're not beating Seton Hall and St. John's to his final cut list.

If we want D.C. Catholic League kids then we should be in the Big East or Atlantic 10. Or maybe we shouldn't be hitting that league so hard. I mean, a kid in an I-95 Corridor Catholic high school chooses to play basketball at an I-95 Corridor Catholic college? This is news?

I don't know what the answer is, but for better or for worse CUSA is a Southern-based conference, so maybe the recruiting should focus there more than the megalopolis kids who are probably going to colleges similar in geography and makeup to their high schools.

I went to Bishop O'Connell. I am very aware and familiar with the WCAC. From DJO alone they have sent talent to Rice (Ako Adams - Rice's career 3pt leader in a few categories, score 21 against us this year and recorded a few season highs against us this year) and JMU (Matt Lewis - 21 points against us this year) in the last few years (those two are just off the top of my head, there could be more). We're not going to get the Melo Trimbles and Markelle Fultz's of the league but there is so much talent in that league it frustrates me that not a single WCAC player has come played for ODU since I started following my freshman year (09-10) while both CAA and CUSA teams are and have been getting their players. Literally every school in the conference (O'Connell has had an uncharacteristically bad year this past year but I trust Joe Wootten to turn it back around, and Ireton/Ryken are usually always trash) has ballers, even if they're not the top level recruits
