We are weeks behind where we should be on this crisis. If the president had listened to his own intelligence resources and the scientific community, we could've been far ahead on the availability of testing and limited the spread of the virus through early detection and limited quarantining. Perhaps if he had kept the pandemic response office as part of the NSC that would've happened. It is possible to be a supporter of Trump and yet be able to admit that he's made a mistake.

What's amazing to me is that "seemingly" intelligence people, who are Trump supporters, don't believe he can do wrong. He did tell us he could shoot someone in the middle of 5th Avenue and his supporters wouldn't care. I now believe he was right when he made that claim.

We’ve probably got 3-4 weeks at best before restrictions will need to be eased. A few scientists think we should lock down for 3 months but that’s really not doable given the way our economy works here

Let's see what the next couple of weeks hold. If it's anywhere close to what the more pessimistic scenarios have predicted, I don't think there will be much debate that the social distancing has to go on longer.

Every step in fighting a pandemic can be second guessed and with hindsight are easy to spot. I didn’t think the ban on travel from China early on was warranted, i was wrong.

RE: The CORONAVIRUS thread
They didn't start testing here in Corpus Christi (Nueces County) until last Thursday.
They have tested <100 people altogether. Tests have to go to Austin. (+/- 200 miles away)

Saturday we had 1 positive.
At noon Tuesday we had 5.
At 6 PM we had 8.
We stand at 10 as of the 10PM news.
Corpus is a Spring Break destination and that was 2 weeks ago.
All are travel related. 7/10 are male. Only 4 are over 40

You don’t have daily briefings with intelligence officials or maybe you wouldn’t have disagreed with the travel ban. It’s pretty obvious that the most important decision makers in our country had their fingers in their ears and were yelling “lalalalala” while they were being warned in January.

Look, I don't care for the guy, but we've got much bigger structural problems than a tiny pandemic response office.

As much as people like to say that all nations are in this together, everyone is in it for themselves in procuring their own critical medical equipment and supplies. Do you think since the CCP covered the virus up and allowed infected people to travel the world they'll be nice and give us some of the respirators that they produce? Hell, no.

Also, our health care system as a whole needs broad and systemic changes to the health care system and I'll just say they're not going to happen whether the next president is the 45th or the 46th.

The good news from China, Japan, South Korea and Singapore is all because they have MASSIVE pandemic response plans and resources ready and waiting. Western countries and especially the US thought that it was too expensive but building useless fighter jets and even navy ships at billions each that didn't work as intended is a necessity.

Trump cut the agency, whose job it was to prepare for pandemics, in 2017- "Hey they didn't do anything anyway. Just a waste of money".

except, he didn't. You really should get your news & opinions from different sources than CNN, Mother Jones and Common Dreams

This is from a "fact-checking" group (I'm sure you would lump them with the all the people pushing "the Democratic hoax");

It’s thus true that the Trump administration axed the executive branch team responsible for coordinating a response to a pandemic and did not replace it, eliminating Ziemer’s position and reassigning others, although Bolton was the executive at the top of the National Security Council chain of command at the time.

Dude, even the Washington Post disagrees with your anonymous “fact checking group”. But at least you’re admitting it’s from a leftist group. You’re a fan of The Squad, aren’t you?

The Truth From Someone Who Was There

Even MSNBC stopped spreading this falsehood after the truth about NSC reorganization and consolidation of duplicating roles came to light. BTW, Trump didn’t “cut” anything. Funding actually increased.

Should you ever want to know what actually happens in DC, I’ll be happy to fill you in. You ain’t getting honesty from your current sources of information.

RE: The CORONAVIRUS thread
The number of cases being reported in this country is totally meaningless. Arkansas has reported 230+ cases. However, according to today's paper the medical center in Little Rock was hoping to do 700 tests a day. However, they no longer have the reagents to do the testing. They got a call yesterday that a vendor could deliver enough reagents to test 60 people. How could the greatest country in the world get to this point?

Just saw an article in the NYT trying to explain how the world's richest country could run out of 75 cent face masks. The incompetence, from those we count on to keep us safe, is simply mind-boggling.

General rule of thumb is we are not diagnosing 90 percent of cases. The good news is almost all of those are likely non serious because Someone would eventually seek medical attention

Side note if I see one more mathematical expert show support for a 3 month lockdown I’m going to scream. This is the United States. You can’t just lock everyone down for months on end like China did.

A complete lockdown is one thing. Many jobs allow some degree of social distancing. But, how long before we are okay with filling 20K basketball and 80K football stadiums?

Even social distancing is killing the economy. Most small businesses are not set up for telework and are hemorrhaging money.

We can try to go as long as we can but by May 1 you’re going to have a hard time not reopening things. Including sports

As an aside there was an article a couple weeks ago about how a lack of FBS football could nearly bankrupt some P5 schools

That's still a long time for things to be stopped- 5 weeks or so. At least, if we hold off until May schools and colleges can delay opening until late August which will give them plenty of time to work out the details. I really have no predictions on this thing, but it sounds like the next 3 weeks will be really bad and then we will, at least, be over the initial hump. My physician son still believes this thing won't be over until we have a vaccine.

like someone said, the actual # of cases are likely very much higher than the confirmed #. Not enough tests to go around.
