Coronavirus canceling college basketball games
Huge credit to Chicago St for being college basketball’s trailblazer by becoming the first school to put safety first. Proud fan tonight.

I will be more impressed when they cancel a home game.

Call me cynical - but I suspect their primary motivation is really to save a few $$$.

I'm sure they'll show up to Vegas for the WAC tourney though. The odds are about 1000000:1 given how bad they are, but they might win it and make the NCAA! And that would mean $$$.

Not sure it's trailblazing when they wouldn't be around the outbreak of coronavirus when playing Seattle and to my knowledge there isn't any reported cases of it in Utah. So this seems to smell of trying to save a few bucks were they can under the cover of coronavirus.... WAC better tell them to stay home for WACT in Vegas then too. Ppl from Seattle and Utah will be showing up...

Hopefully they get booted from the WAC soon. Sorry excuse for a team.

“The cancellations are believed to be the first by a major sport in the United States due to the virus.“

ESPN is being VERY generous in their description of Chicago State athletics.

There would be no point in that. The idea is to avoid crowds, and I don't think that 391 people in an arena that seats 7,000 qualifies as a crowd. You go to a Chicago State home game to avoid close contact with other humans.

We don’t test for virus

Why now. Because of the hyped fear

Is this a problem? Of course. But the reaction is why over the top

I'll be more impressed when they cancel their sports program.

Chicago canceled a humongous housewares show at McCormick next week that would've brought people from 130 countries and booked 47,000 hotel rooms. Chicago State made this decision because they're pioneers in player health and I expect other leagues to follow their lead shortly.

At least some conferences have stout fines for forfeiting a game. Not sure it's been updated, but used to be the Sun Belt fine worked out to roughly 150% of what it would cost the typical visiting team to make the typical league road trip in that in sport.

Will be interesting to see how the WAC handles it.

I thought I read somewhere that almost all of coronavirus deaths in Washington were at a nursing home 15 miles outside of Seattle. Was Chicago State planning on visiting that nursing home?

Huh? Seattle is pretty much the epicenter of the virus in the US. All 9 deaths related to the virus have been in the Seattle area. 1 confirmed case in Utah, there are 4 in Illinois so that might be overreaction.

"major sport", not "major sports program"... there's a difference.

As other posters have mentioned, there is no doubt this is an attempt by CSU to avoid travel costs under the guise of concerns about the virus in an attempt to mitigate any fines. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to be cancelling games at this point, and honestly, most of the reaction to this virus has been way overblown.

They're probably doing to save money. They're barely D-I at this point.

9th deaths all had underlying health issues 7 came from a retirement home in a town 15/20 miles from Seattle on the other side of Lake Washington...

Exactly. The WAC basketball tournament will be played in Las Vegas, which is a far more likely place for the virus to spread, given that Vegas hosts vacationers from all over the world every day all year round. Any honest assessment of risk would conclude that traveling to Seattle for a game is a much lower risk.

It would help if the WAC/Seattle supported Chicago St putting safety first and didn't leave CSU on an island but they'll come around.

If they want people to believe that they are putting safety first, and not just trying to eliminate the expenses of a long road trip, Chicago State should announce that they are cancelling all intercollegiate athletic events until further notice.
