Baseball vs Louisiana
1-1 after 1. Neither pitcher all that sharp in the 1st. Rice scores on back to back doubles by Cruz and Bulman.

So far, we look like a better fielding team than last year.

Rickett has settled down after the 1st. Still 1-1 going to B4. Owls offense has only the 2 doubles in B1 to show.

Larzabal comes in for Rickett to start T5 and promptly gives up 1B, sac bunt, E4, 1B, 1B. 3-1 for now with 1 out, 2 on.

RE: Baseball vs Louisiana
My comment about better fielding was... way off base.
2 errors and poor Rice pitching leads to a 6-1 Louisiana lead in T5. The Cajuns still
At bat.

4 Owl errors and 6 unearned runs. 11-1 after T7. Going from bad to worse to worser.

Wondering how a Lance Berkman hire could have been worse.

One positive: a nice inning from Caleb Burgess in his Rice debut. I think he’s coming back from arm surgery.

I was wondering how much better it could have been.

But let’s see if Bragga can get this team to be play better the rest of this season and how much stronger the Owls may be after the arrival of next year’s reportedly strong recruiting class.

We just don't have the talent level that we are accustomed to. A decade with a $20,000 net price differential versus TCU and Baylor will do that to you. Wayne covered it up with coaching for as long as he could. If next year's class turns out to be as strong as rumored, and the one after that does too, then we could be back in business by 2023. But it's not going to be pretty until then.

A question that I asked before, but do not believe that I received an answer, is what objective measurement( ranking of recruiting classes etc) do we have re the upcoming classes

thx

Im not sure what you're getting at? Sure Stanford is off to a slow start, but they seem to be waking up. They even beat No 16 Michigan, just tonight. While the scheduling has been tough and did throw us right into the fire, thats not an excuse for how we've been playing.

There are no good metrics to measure a recruiting class, especially in baseball. But I do believe that the new financial aid structure will play a big role in making Rice competitive with the top schools in Texas, from a recruiting standpoint. Also, the players we have now are a reflection of the recruiting done 2-3 years ago by Pope, it has nothing to do with Bragga or the current staff. I don't think we can measure Bragga's recruits for another 2-3 years. But hopefully by 2023 Rice will return to being one of the best programs in the country.

IIRC, the consensus 2-3 years ago was that Pope was doing pretty much as well as could be done with the financial aid structure then in place.

Pope was doing a good job. Bragga decided he wasn’t. Hence the recall of offers and the release of Pope.

It’s worked out swimmingly so far.....

Pope was doing a bad job, just goes to show how much this message board actually knows. Unless y’all really know what’s going on you shouldn’t just state things as facts. He was a bad judge of talent.
