GCU goes 2-1 against #22 Oklahoma State with their main slugger, Cuba Bess, only playing a pitch hitting role due to a hamstring pull.
The team looks to be well rounded with superb pitching and above average defense. Should be a great season.
Up next the Oregon Ducks on Tuesday.

GCU takes down Oregon Ducks 4-3 in 12 innings. Controversial call at first base gave GCU the win. Perhaps the 1st base ump had a plane to catch.
Glad the call went in our favor though. I am sure the Ducks are livid.

I was watching the live stream and am not sure what was controversial about the play. First baseman's stretch for the ball pulled his heel off the bag. The first base ump was in perfect position to see he was off the bag and called it right away. Yeah, the Ducks HC lost his mind and got tossed, but their dugout is also on the opposite side of first base. There is no way they could have seen the small gap between the first baseman's heel and the bag.
It also wasn't a surprise that their true freshman reliever spiked the very next pitch in the dirt immediately after that with two outs and bases loaded to plate GCU's winning run. I can't imagine the adrenaline he had going after thinking they got the out, then seeing his coach lose it and get run. The recipe for a wild pitch was so obvious that I called it to my wife as he was entering the wind up.
Nice start for GCU. Hard to tell if the foot came off from the replay but the ump was right on top of the play so hard to argue against the call. Interesting note, former Sac State pitching coach Jake Angier is now at Oregon.
Hornets started the season 1-2 against UCSB. Won the opener 6-1, lost game 2 1-0 in 11, and lost game 3 4-2. Similar game to many we had last season, well pitched game but just couldn't get runners across. We host UW-Milwaukee for a 4 game series starting Thursday night.

Yeah, there were multiple references in interviews to Angier now being at Oregon, particularly by GCU's starting LHP Jack Schneider. Kid said he figured he'd see a lot of lefties in the lineup based on his previous outings against Sac St when he relied heavily on change ups and didn't really have a breaking ball. He's since developed that pitch and rose to the challenge of throwing it better and consistently in this contest.
It's outside of opening weekend, but HUGE game for Aggies Baseball at ASU today. Nick Gonzo versus Tork Bomb. Should be an offense packed night. Good luck, Aggies!

#8 ASU gets by us 6-5 in extra innings. WAC baseball seems very solid this year. Could be one of the best years ever.

NMSU had bases full with 1 out in the 1st, all on walks, but then had two strikeouts. If they managed to push one over, could have been a very different game. But, I was pleased with the result.
Hornets swept a 4 game home series against UW Milwaukee 2 weekends ago, and just split a 4 game home series against Santa Clara this past weekend. Santa Clara has a weekday win over Stanford and a win over 5th ranked Georgia.
Hornet pitching has looked to continue where it left off last season. Hornet bats still need to be a bit better, but we are scraping out wins nonetheless.
After a home game against Pacific tomorrow night, the Hornet are on the road until the last week of March.
Edit: Christiansen picked up his 300th win during the Santa Clara series.
