Would they consider trying again if the MEAC reached out to them to replace A&T? There aren't any other ever remotely viable alternatives in North Carolina (unless Fayetteville State is a stronger contender than I imagine they are)
Unless money is still an issue, I doubt they would say no.

MEAC should double invite Virginia St and Winston-Salem St. Both in the geographical core. At least give the membership a perception of stability.

They ought to go down to Division II and invite them.
There's no stability when their schools are in bad financial positions.
I would think Florida A&M and Howard would be looking for other options now.

Albany State, Clark Atlanta and Bowie State seemed to have their financials are in order. The other D2 HBCUs are struggling except for Tuskegee.

I'm just going to paste this reply from about 80 posts ago in this thread. David, join us in the real world and pay attention because the following would not be happening if their financials were in order.
"Albany State is dropping two men's teams at the end of the current school year leaving them with only four men's teams. They are making budget cuts and will barely have enough teams for D2 in addition to being on probation for infractions involving eight teams; Albany State is nowhere close to even thinking about a D1 move, if ever."

I got the impression that while Howard was part of the group stiffing Hampton for its departure, they, too, have put themselves out there. I think both have wanted CAA.

I was never worried about Florida A&M, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, Howard, or Hampton. To a lesser extent, South Carolina St and Delaware St. The rest of the MEAC gave me pause.
I can see:
North Carolina Central joining the Big South
Florida A&M joining the OVC or SOCON (A-Sun seems like a poor fit IMO)
Howard joining the CAA or Patriot (a bit of stretch)
South Carolina St and Delaware St to the A-Sun with football in Big South

Delaware St. is tiny. South Carolina St. is having financial problems as a university.

Athletically SC State is on decent financial footing. The University itself is having some budget cuts due to a decline in out of state enrollment, but has a new student recruitment staff and actual leaders in the admin and on the BOT so that should just be a minor hiccup going forward. They've created bridge programs with the different regional technical colleges that should help increase in-state enrollment, and they finally have staff dedicated to recruiting out of state students. They were in serious trouble a few years back, but the worst seems to be over now and things are looking better in Orangeburg.

Chicago State is not an HBCU.
It is considered one even when they are not.
NO
You can't just say **** and it becomes true.
Chicago State was founded in 1867 and did not have a majority black student enrollment until more than a century later.
The H in HBCU is for Historically.
Chicago State was majority white when Brown was handed down by the Supreme Court and when the 1965 Higher Education Act was passed to provide added funds to HBCU's.

Yeah, I've heard some schools in the Philly area toss out the "historical or predominantly" thing (one was from a high ranking administrator at Cheyney)...yeah, that's not a thing?
In the same way, though, when HBCU's started to diversify their enrollment profiles even a little. It's odd.
A lot of gatekeeping either way, but, I thought this was always about your original charter and mission.

Nobody wants Chicago State in their conference. The are only in the WAC because the WAC needed them.

Now more than ever, it seems.

The MEAC might need Chicago State eventually just to have enough numbers for D1 viability. A predominantly African-American school in a predominantly African-American area of the 3rd largest city in the country hits the student recruitment jackpot for those HBCU's.

What’s stopping them from recruiting those students now? The typical student at Chicago State isn’t getting into Howard.

That does not make them a HBCU. Chicago State is a predominately black university which is why they are getting this scholarship funding from a sorority.
Quote:Because of a new fund from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., more students like Topps who attend predominantly or historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) will receive scholarships to help them pay for tuition, books and other school supplies.
...
Scott said her college is Illinois’ only predominantly black university and a majority of its students have financial needs that are not fully met by federal and state grants. Additional scholarships from the endowment, she said, can help the school close that gap for students and remove economic barriers that stand in the way of college completion.

What makes a school an HBCU?
The designation of HBCU was created by the Higher Education Act of 1965. This law defines these schools as “any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans.”

Conversely, Bluefield State is a HBCU even though it's current enrollment is over 80% white due to its previous history.
