Yes, there is zero reason for Illinois to be getting out-recruited by MAC programs anywhere, much less in Illinois. That is nuts.

I thought North Texas had a really good signing day, but Cincinnati flat out killed it. Which coach is bringing in these top players for Cincy, and how is he doing it?

Luke Fickell, DC Marcus Freeman and QB Coach Gino Giudigli are the top recruiters. Fickell and Freeman have a lot of clout with HS coach in the region due to their Ohio State days. There is a lot of talent within a 200 mile radius of our campus.

So what? If ifs and buts were candies and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas. They are recruiting teenage boys, most of whom have been used to playing on mostly winning teams.

"Sure, you'll probably be a loser with us and quite possibly a winner with them, but you'll be a loser at a higher level, so consider the benefit to your future career as a car salesman after it turns out the NFL isn't actually interested in you" is not the strongest possible pitch.

We, ODU, are quietly getting optimistic with the new coaching staff.

UNLV had their best recruiting class in football ever under new head coach Marcus Arroyo. UNLV was ranked No. 1 in the MWC by Rivals and No. 2 in the conference by 247Sports. Arroyo was the offensive coordinator for Oregon in 2019. The new Allegiant Stadium has helped as well as the Fertitta football complex, their new on-campus state-of-the-art training center.

RE: National Signing Day Thread ...
I was looking at Texas HS recruiting. Now Texas A&M was rated 5th or 6th nationally. They got #2 and #4 in Texas. But then they only got 5 of the top 70 while Texas got 16 of the top 70 (247). They've shifted to a lot more out of state recruiting. Only 12 of their 26 were from Texas and only half of the remaining 14 were from SEC states. Jimbo obviously has a different philosophy.

The various Texas schools had the lowest number of the Texas top 100 I have seen in 6 or 7 years I have kept track of it. It was A&M, Baylor (new coach) and TCU who had the decline. Baylor only got 4. TCU got 2 (Rivals) or 4 (247). Both had regularly gotten more. Seems like Alabama, Georgia and Florida got players A&M might have previously gotten (8 between the 3 of them) while the players Baylor and TCU might have gotten scattered. ACC had 6 instead of their usual 0 to 3, between Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami, Duke and Virginia Tech.

I think Jimbo appreciates the value of that Texas talent. It's probably just that he and his staff haven't had time to build the relationships at the HS level that grease those skids. I'm sure he's working on that.

Jimbo does appreciate Texas talent but he said at coaches night he’s taking a more national approach with the idea being to focus on Texas, the Southeast and then the rest of the nation for talent with the idea being to focus about a third each though obviously taking premium talent wherever it comes from.

Seems to be paying dividends so far

Texas 12
Southeast 7
The Rest 7

Looks about right.

Have to agree with Quo that Fisher is working the Texas HS connections. Fisher was good at it in Florida. Just needed work to get the OL talent.

Well that's just everyone's approach, e.g., at LSU they try to "build a wall" around the state to keep the best Louisiana players, but then try to raid Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida for top talent their too. At Florida, Alabama, and Georgia, they do the same thing in reverse. USC does it with California, Ohio State does it with Ohio, Penn State with Pennsylvania, etc. etc.

If your school is located in a talent-rich state, you try to get as much of that as you can, then raid other states for good players too. If you aren't, then you build networks in neighboring states that are. E.g., Michigan takes pride in the long list of Ohio talent it has managed to lure to Michigan, Oklahoma the same with regard to Texas, etc.

Few schools recruit nationally. Notre Dame, Tennessee, Alabama under Saban.

Most stick to a few areas. An example, when Kentucky had Hal Mumme, he recruited Texas and Georgia where he had coached before. UK had about 25% Texans, 25% Georgians, 25% Kentuckians with the rest from surrounding states, mostly Ohio. Georgia under Mark Richt mostly got Georgia players, but also did the surrounding states-Florida, Alabama, South Carolina. Kirby Smart is adopting an approach more like Saban.

Texas mostly sticks with Texas and Louisiana. This year it was 18 Texas and 1 Arizona. Texas A&M before Jimbo was overwhelmingly Texas and Louisiana.
Randomly looked at Arizona St.-13 California, 2 Arizona, 5 others (OH, GA, MO, 2 FL).

One of these things just doesn't belong here.
