I've told my wife more times than she would care to remember that there are many, many smart individuals that frequent here. What we do for a living reinforces that. Dumba$$es don't hold the jobs listed above.

The other busier boards force one to try and filter out the ignorant. Here, even if on opposite sides of the political spectrum - mostly the members are intelligent........it's why I like it here.

I agree with you on that.

I worked several years at my work place in Virginia with a guy that graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue.

Typically it's just Boiler Up.
Sometimes it's "Boiler up, Hammer down, Hail Purdue."

I worked for a large food manufacturer in Columbus, Ohio for 17 years. Knew many Purdue alumni through the years as engineers were obviously a big part of the buisness.

RE: What Do You Do For a Living?
I'm amazed at how many of you have jobs where a lot of paperwork is concerned. THAT would drive me nuts. Even at home my wife deals with whatever paperwork comes in. It bores me to death. I tell her that I would rather dig a 100 ft ditch 2 feet deep then have to deal with paperwork to support myself. I'm not into details and even here on this board whenever someone is long winded I just scan the post but don't read it.

I've always liked to paint and I am awed by those that have intricate detail on their paintings, mine never have it as it drives me up the wall with boredom. I wish I could be like some of you that support yourselves with that line of work but unfortunately that's not me.

It's surprising that with so many college classes that I took and had to do research that I was able to do it. In one class alone we had to write 9 reports and one research paper...in one semester. That's A LOT of reading and writing. I was a Social Work major, hey I could have been president like Obama but I had one flaw, I've worked for a living. LOL

Sometimes these things can on the surface be misleading to some degree. While my job was indeed associated with lots of technical drawings, reports, memos, and associated tech manual updates .... it also involved significant amounts of travel (foreign and stateside), and lots of walking around, up, and down to the various levels of large ships to obtain the required data. For example an Aircraft Carrier has in the neighborhood of 20 decks (floors) and is over 3 football fields long. An 8 to 12 hour day going back and forth, up and down on the ships while carrying a stack of drawings and other work items can be physically tiring.

Hey ODU, this guy was telling me about two friends who graduated at the same time and went into the Navy together. After basic they left their separate ways. After serving their time they bumped into each other and in talking about their military service they found out that they were on the Enterprise at exactly the same time and never even knew it. Now, that's a BIG ship.

Aircraft Carriers (U.S. Navy at least) are sometimes referred to as "floating cities" for good reason. They have several kitchens, dining halls, barber shop, Navy Exchange, gymnasium, places to watch first run movies, church services in the Chapel, etc.

When out at sea on deployment with the Air Department on board, they can easily have 5,000 people on board. All that being said, it is still pretty odd that they never crossed paths in one of the passageways, or in the mess hall at some point assuming they shared a deployment together. It would be more likely if one was an officer and the other was not because then they would have different living quarters and places to eat, but still possible either way. Maybe one or both had their appearance change so much that they simply didn't recognize one another.

It’s actually very likely because most sailors stay in their ‘hood’. If you’re an engineer rating, you have little reason to visit decks above the hanger. Same thing for the air det in reverse.

That's reasonable, but then again everyone is in the Hangar Bay at times for one reason or another if for nothing else than special occasions, Change Of Command ceremonies, etc. It is a lot of people though so still very possible to get lost in the crowd.
