My brother in law is in his mid 30s and a huge Bernie supporter. There could be some really interesting equal protection, 14th Amendment, etc arguments for similarly situated people who worked and saved to pay for college or pay off their loans and who do not get similarly compensated.

Has a class action lawsuit ever been filed against the US Govt? No way it would win but would be interesting given how many people would sign on and the dollar amouts that would be involved.

There really are lots of people who think that they can simply confiscate trillions of dollars of wealth from people to pay for these things and that they won't have any say in the matter, or any negative consequences.

A lot

Also would the loan forgiveness qualify as income under IRS regs and form 1099 C? If not, why?

So much of this is so half baked and not thought through. Typical liberal proposal.

Of course it would Rath, but that's not a concern... at least not until they don't get their 'refund' check that's 10 times what they put in to get refunded...

but that's a minor point, really.... I mean, other than collectively.

Just guessing but I suspect that the lost refunds (money the government isn't paying out) will cover 10% or so of the actual loans.

What's disgusting is currently student loans are one of the few debts that aren't discharged under bankruptcy court. How does Warren justify all the people who had their lives buried by student debt that started over (with the student debt) and managed to survive. This is typical democrat the gubmint will protect you from your bad decisions.

So everyone's debt is forgiven tomorrow then how does it work.

Free college for everyone starting that same day..or the next semester? If all of a sudden you forgive the debt but college is still not free...where do you get the money to pay for next semester?

Surely if you are forgiven peoples debt you are not going to stand behind those same people taking out more loans? We all know nothing is free the government will have to pay for schools to keep their doors open, in "free college for all"

So even if Warren thinks she can bypass congress on forgiven the debt Congress would have to pass laws on how to fund those colleges. So again with what we have in place today students would still need to take out new loans to cover it. Our government would still be standing behind those loans.

Also will the government still be handing out pell grants with "free for all" tuition and books are only part of the cost of going to college. You still have food, clothes, housing which a decent part of those student loans when for.

Errrrr,

Until they are paying in perpetuity for others “free” college, right?

We did it the right way too. Drove used cars for245k miles, skipped vacations, cooked our dinners.

For, why?

To have funds if and when our children wanted to go to either trade school or college.

One will be done in May. Other will be done in May next. So we’re done, right?

OK, I've been thinking about this for a bit and I might be persuaded to get on board as long as they add mortgage and car loan forgiveness to the plan.

Quote:A state official said families were dropping private coverage so their children would be eligible for the subsidized plan.
"People who were already able to afford health care began to stop paying for it so they could get it for free," said Dr. Kenny Fink, the administrator for Med-QUEST at the Department of Human Services. "I don't believe that was the intent of the program."

How much you want to bet that if his spouse and him had their own insurance through her companies policy that they dropped it as soon as he got elected so they could get that Free Health Care State Officials get.

I work in healthcare
Although I'm ALLOWED to keep my children on my policy, it's cheaper for me not to, even if I pay their premiums.

To think that I'm the only person who knows this is silly. I did the math back when Obama proposed it and it was the same result then even without the subsidy. Insurance for 20 yr olds is very cheap, especially if you have fewer than 2.4 (or whatever the actuarial tables on a 'family' policy say)

In other words, too bad, now you get to pay taxes for those whose debt is excused too.

Quote:The father of a college student was seen confronting Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren about her plan to cancel student loan debt in a video that went viral earlier this week.

The dad chastised Warren over her plan, and got especially heated after the senator and 2020 presidential candidate told him he could not get the money back that he saved to pay for his daughter’s school.

“My daughter is in school. I saved all my money. Am I gonna get my money back?” the dad asked.

“Of course not,” Warren replied.

“So you’re gonna pay for people who didn’t save any money, but those of us who did the right thing get screwed?” the man asked.

The man mentioned that he worked a “double shift” to pay for his daughter’s education, and accused Warren of mocking his life story.

You’re laughing at me!” the man said.

Warren denied that she was laughing, but the dad was not buying her explanation.

“That’s exactly what you’re doing!” he said. “We did the right thing and we get screwed!”

Warren unveiled a $640 billion plan last year to eliminate student loan debt, a plan that would be funded by a tax on the ultra wealthy.

Link

He makes a great point. If you do things the right and honest way, you get screwed. Same with those that immigrate into the country legally. They do things the right way and get screwed.

If she or any other democrat get into office, they'll make you pay for everyone else's "free" education too.

Warrens Social Security example is a poor metaphor because nobody paid into Social Security until the day it was established. In other words, everyone who paid into it could reasonably expect to benefit from it eventually.

Warrens current student loan plan is like telling everyone who didnt pay their taxes for the last 4 years that their unpaid tax debt is forgiven----and everyone who DID pay their taxes will receive no refund, and instead---will get a small tax increase to cover the cost of tax forgiveness for those that didnt pay. Warren is an idiot....and a dangerous one at that.
