We had nerds trying to equate Josh not winning tourney games to how Coach K almost got fired at Duke. Penny is 14-5 in year two with NCAA hopes still very much in play and this is how it goes?

Wow.

Wow is all I could say as well.

Half of these goobers still have a thing for Josh.

Meanwhile Penny has lost two NBA level players in James Wiseman and Rayjon Tucker (who is actually on the Utah roster and playing) from his number 1 recruiting class and has still kept this train on the tracks.

If he can coach this team to the bubble after losing DJ Jefferies then he has done a wonderful job through a ton of adversity, regardless of the opinions of some of our "fans".

I forgot about Rayjon. We've had our share of adversity. Let's come out swinging tho! We have talent. We have a group that plays together. A coaching staff that has their stuff together.

It's February. Let's go! We're not in the Consolation Bracket yet. Let's win. There are some Quad2 wins to be had. I'll cheer for the buttchuggers to win so that we keep that Quad1 win and we'll see what happens!

Don't expect Lester, Precious, ALo, Tyler H, Malco to lay down. It's time. LET'S GO TIGERS!

Edit: For the record, making NCAA Tourney would be a BIG accomplishment. Just saying I haven't given up on the remaining, active Tigers. I was bummed AF when DJ went down. Can't change it. I'll continue cheering for those with Memphis across their chest.

Wow.

Now we have mods starting troll threads

Negative. Stating facts. Big facts.

Where are the big facts of your OP or thread title - was it the laughter? Yes, the "slogan" turned sour. But let's rewind back to the infamous comment...

“That’s what we want,” Penny Hardaway said, by way of the Commercial Appeal. “You know, this is Memphis. We don’t bluff. We want all the smoke. We want everything. We want everything to be about Memphis. … If we want to win and hang our first banner in this building — or especially downtown at FedExForum — we are going to have to get talent, and with talent comes expectations and that’s what we want. That puts us in the conversation.”

I feel some of you have forgotten that he was using the slogan in a positive manner about the city and the team. Things changed (JW would say hello, if his momma would let him). I understand if you're trying to take the program places it's never been, then it's going to be tough and things might not always work out. There are plenty of naysayers out there to remind Penny of things whenever they take 2 steps back. I just don't think our own fans should pile on.

Look, I've always appreciated your posts and perspective on things. But if you can't admit the thread was a troll thread - and it had it's desired effect - then not sure how you could be a mod to begin with.

This is a forum, nothing inappropriate about the thread title by anyone including a mod given it has been the team theme since the class was signed.

Like I said earlier, I may have over-reacted but at it's core this thread does appear trollish given the laughter. Had he omitted that I could have easily perceived it as mere disappointment in our failure to live up to the expression, including it made me think it was meant to demean and deride our coach and as such was unbecoming of a mod who is tasked with holding the rest of the board to a high standard of behavior and decorum.

It's not the thread title, it was the baahahahahahahaha. If he'd stuck with 03-weeping then it would have been fine as an expression of disappointment in our failure to fulfill the ideal behind this new motto of ours. There may be an object lesson and a learning opportunity for a rookie mod here to perhaps consider the potential for coming off as petty and mean. As a mod one should be held to a higher standard. But that's just my own humble opinion.

Be that as it may this thread did become quite humorous.

Good to see discussion on a tough topic without folks resorting to insults. We are all Tiger fans and many of us have strong opinions. Engaging in a back and forth without throwing out personal insults makes for a better message board.

RE: #WeWantAllTheSmoke
I made this thread after the SMU game, obviously. I used the #WeWantAllTheSmoke as the thread title, because that has been the team mantra for this season. One of you linked what Penny meant by that mantra, and it definitely represents what he and all of us should be thinking about in terms of Memphis basketball but also the city of Memphis.

Did things happen to derail our season, sure. It happens and that is part of the unknowns that can occur during a basketball season/campaign.

But lets go back to why I made this post. Again, I am a fan. I am not belittling anyone, but I am making fun of that mantra for the season. The day I posted this thread, as I mentioned, we had just lost to SMU - at home - when we were up and didn't score a single bucket, I think in the last 6 minutes (if I recall) ... AND coming off a 40-pt thrashing in the previous game at Tulsa. You can't do what Memphis did in the SMU game, at home ... all of this while the team is continuing to turn the ball over at a high clip and the FT woes continue - year after year.

That is why I made the thread and that is why I put a "bwhahahaahahahaa" comment as the first statement and then a crying-emoji after ... because the mantra doesn't match up with the product on the court.

Honestly, I am sure - especially this season - a lot of fans at different schools are questioning their team's college slogan/mantra for this season - because its been a crazy collegiate bball season this year. Lots of volatility and everyone's preseason aspirations may be in question.

The emoji alone would have been perfectly acceptable, the laughter sure makes it look as if you were laughing at the coach and the team and by continuation even the fans who bought into the whole expression, even if you weren't. Perception is a funny thing.

Like I said earlier, perhaps this can be an object lesson for you going forward and a learning experience. You are surely aware that as one in a position of authority you are expected to perform at a higher standard and rightfully so.

That even a few of us perceived it as a slight should be enlightening. Please be better than those over whose time here you exercise control.

In business I was taught to read, then re-read, then read again any emails I sent out before hitting send so that I could avoid offending the recipient or making myself look foolish. Almost losing a major account drove that message home.

I agree with constructive criticism and definitely welcome the feedback. Appreciate you stating it so eloquently. I do follow the same practices you mentioned in your last paragraph as well.

Nonetheless - me being objective to any Memphis sports' team will continue - I am just judging what I see on the court, I'm sure you would do the same.

I'm closing this thread up now and moving to smack. It doesn't do any good on this main board.
