RE: OT: ASUN Conference wants to create new multi sport conference
I’m not sure I completely understand why they are doing this....I read most of that article and still don’t understand. Might be because I’m still half asleep and reading it between getting the kids ready for school.

But the ASUN is already a multi sport DI conference.

RE: OT: ASUN Conference wants to create new multi sport conference
The biggest thing is, it’s an idea, an “exploration”. But, as stated in that article, it’s smacks of the BigEast taking their (basket)ball, AND name, and going home. Sounds like maybe a big chunk of ASUN member want to be a hoops conference. The new entity needs teams that have played (no obligation to keep playing) at least 6 sports together for 7 years. If those guys wanna keep the name, cut down to hoops and a few other small sports, that’s what’s being explored.
The rest, who wanna keep going big guns, are gonna have to find programs to bring in, and start life anew under the new name. I’m sure it’ll be easier to attract some “D1” opportunities. Of coarse, LU will be king of that hill. Likely land AQ bids in just about every sport. Who knows, they may even be driving the change. First teams I’d see them targeting are Kennesaw St and North Alabama.

RE: OT: ASUN Conference wants to create new multi sport conference
Hav said the ASun will start FBS, with FCS upgrades like JMU, Stony Brook, Albany, Delaware from:the CAA and Jacksonville St, Youngstown St, E Kentucky, and NC A&T but that’s been shot down so many times on the main realignment board.

Now the main realignment board posters are spouting that the ASun will receive eastern teams from CUSA and the Belt like Ga St, Ga So, Appy St, Old Dominion, Marshall, Charlotte etc. But there should be fb action in 2023, so why leave an existing CFB conference for one without any CFP money until 2025. That’s total foolishness, and besides, they would have to pay exit fees.

Moreover, why would Ga St join a conference with Kennesaw St? Those two Atlanta based schools hate each other’s football programs.

All I know is, UNA and UAB have been hanging out a lot lately as far as officials from both schools.

The are probably gearing up for the FBS TV contracts that expire in a few years. Be ready to pounce amid any shake ups coming.

RE: OT: ASUN Conference wants to create new multi sport conference
So if I understand this correctly 7 members of the current ASun Conference have been invited to join the CCSA which is attempting to become an all sport conference and the ASun is attempting to invite new members to remain an all sport conference itself?

All members of the ASUN...

The 7 is the schools that have to join to make it a reality. If 1 of the 7 say no, it's dead in the water. But all 10 will be invited. The other 10, supposedly, will all be current FBS schools. That way an FBS conference can be established.

It will be 20 all together

RE: OT: ASUN Conference wants to create new multi sport conference
So does the ASUN stop existing??? Why doesn’t the ASUN just start playing football and move up to FBS??? Why does this take a new conference??? I’m still confused about this process..... 01-wingedeagle

I can't see too many FBS members leave conferences with CFP money and Bowls in place for a new FBS conference that has none.

That's a good question... why would UNA and UAB officials be courting each other? Idk, just seems like something is going on.

I think there is a rule against that. With this scenario, it may provide a loophole...

Could it be that UAB are wanting to advise y'all to get a conference closer to home that's more suited for you? Looks to me like UNA has very little in common with other ASun schools. Being in a conference, say with Jax. State or UWF where there's a better footprint. Seems to me like North Alabama has a lot of potential waiting to explode.

UNA just made the move up to DI, don’t see them making the jump to FBS just yet.

They wont, football would still be FCS, for a while.

UWF is D2..
So no. I wouldn't mind them moving up though
