Original Monday Musings
Another week another sweep. The "era of good feelings" that was the start of the basketball season has ended and enter back into the Great Depression.
Is the Convo cursed?? I am starting to think it is... WE might be under .500 all time there. No I don't have a solution
Toledo is spending heavy for new members of the coaching staff will it pay off? Not sure.. Sometimes I wonder what Toledo would be if some how it was still in Michigan....
Recruiting offers are going out for 2021 players and many of the guys we are after are 6'7 linemen type.. I like it I love it I want some more of it! Wish we could go back to the days where offers were committable on the spot.

I update the 2021 offers all the time. I believe it to be one of the most comprehensive listings for EMU sports fans. I don't have time to post other offers and hudl videos but have added height and weight.

The Convo has never been a good building for EMU basketball. There's nothing that kills atmosphere more than empty seats. It's just too big.

Dear ljmhurons,
I disagree with your comment about empty seats. I've said this before about Rynearson, people do not come to watch losing programs. The same holds true of the Convocation Center. Regardless of twenty game winning seasons, Eastern's Men's program has not had really good teams in twenty years. It will be a long haul, if our program truly gets turned around.
Remember the Convocation Center was originally built to house graduations.

You are correct, sir.
It was the house that Boykins built, but once Boykins, et. al. graduated, it was an arena built for a previous era.
But the idea was, if Bowen seats 5K why build a new arena which seats 5,500??? (yeah, i know Bowen was older than sin and more or less a h.s. gym...)
As mentioned many times here, the hope was that we'd see B1G teams and big crowds. Didn't happen.

you know what kills the mood? a boring average team.
the school makes money on it by renting it out though.

I agree. Most fans of other schools are very complimentary of the Convo as a facility. The problem is the team on the court. Plain and simple. At least we make some money off the Convo.
I couldn't find numbers all the way back to 1998 (somebody else can look it up if they feel like it), but our record at the Convo since 2003 is 173-86 (.668). That's a pretty solid winning record. For reference, the worst in the MAC at home over that period is NIU who is .564 at home.

RE: Original Monday Musings
Thank you for the research Frank. Seems like most of the game I go to there (I have attended at least 2 games every year since 2013) we are taking some big losses, momentum losses, confusing losses, etc. I have to say since Heather was AD the atmosphere for games has improved.. Just when the ticket office calls me sometimes I went to scream at them LOL.

I wonder what our team record is if you take out the non-D1 wins we have accumulated.
Not that other teams don't play them, but it seems like we max out the opportunities (four), while others play one or two games.

By my math (someone correct me if I’m wrong), we are 78-36 at home in D1 games under Murphy. I counted first round MAC tournament games in that total, as well as the two CIT games we hosted over the years.
It’s been rough lately, but Murphy had a three season stretch (13/14-15/16) where we went 35-9 at home against D1 teams. We used to be very strong at the Convo.

Because I was curious I pulled up the media guide online.
Since the opening of the Convo (1998-99) Eastern has gone 43-0 against Non-D1 schools.
Barnes: 2-0
Boone: 6-0
Ramsey: 6-0
Murphy: 31-0
Other schools' games against non-D1s in that timeframe:
Akron: 20
Ball State: 15
BG: 28
Buffalo: 11
Central: 34
Kent State: 25
Miami: 12
Northern: 20
Ohio: 20
Toledo: 11
Western: 21
Disclaimer: There is a slight margin of error here because not all teams have been D1 since 1998 that were on the schedules, but I think I stayed pretty true to their division and era.

78-36 at home against D1 programs isn't bad! I bet only Braun had A better 9 year run........Murphy I guess hasn't been as bad as we think then, but Zero MAC championships, or NCAA tournament appearances! What's Creighton's home record against D1 opponents? Over his 6 seasons.........I guarantee, it's not that high of a percentage! We're sooooo hard on Murphy, and tend to give Creighton nothing but praise.........

The Convo is too big for our fan base, even our potential fan base.
It's fine for other uses, just not for our basketball team.

Interesting that Barnes coached EMU two seasons and probably had one cupcake to warm up each season.
I’m not surprised that EMU leads the MAC in non-D1 games. There’s simply no vision from the ADor Murphy. EMU fans wake up and demand more and don’t accept Wetherbe and Murphy!!!
Thanks for the great information!

I’d have to go back and double-check, but I am pretty sure I just went from the opening of the Convo (Barnes first two seasons) and didn’t include his stint that we called Bowen home. Just for everyone’s information.

i 100% hear you on this. at face value, it seems like different rules for different guys. the difference for me is that Murphy has a hard ceiling on how much his teams can achieve given the incoherent offense that is a hallmark of Murphy ball. with Creighton we can see him growing, and he at least tries to do well on both sides of the ball.
