WBB Game 17: Marshall (7-9, 2-3) vs ODU (13-3, 3-1)
This Saturday at 2, ODU will play the Thundering Herd of Marshall. You should hear lots of "We are Monarchs". I mean...."We are Marshall" chants. ;-) Head coach Tony Kemper is entering his third year at the helm. He went from 9 wins to 17 wins his second year. He also nearly doubled the average attendance in his second year. His wife Sandra works as a professor at Marshall in the communications disorder department. (that is just cool trivia--nothing to do with the game)

For the season, Marshall is 7-9 (2-3). They have an RPI ranking of 237 and SOS of 239. Two of the team's wins are against non-Division one schools that do not factor into the RPI

Vs Kentucky Christian University W 89-40. (non-division one school)
Vs Norfolk St W 75-69 Record: 8-7 RPI: 156
@ Ohio L 51-67 Record: 9-6 RPI: 93
Vs Coppin St W 60-47 Record: 0-16 RPI: 342
Vs Morgan St L 52-57 Record: 4-11 RPI: 297
@ Evansville L 62-66 Record: 2-12 RPI: 327
Vs Alderson Broaddus W 85-41 (non-division one school,
@ Indiana St W 72-60 Record: 2-14 RPI: 268
Vs Bowling Green L 69-82 Record: 5-9 RPI: 191
@ Rutgers L 41-66 Record: 16-2 RPI: 24
@ Towson L 56-59 Record: 5-8 RPI: 207
@ Rice L 43-81 Record: 10-6 (5-0) RPI: 118
@ North Texas W 68-59 Record: 7-10 (1-4) RPI: 257
Vs Middle Tenn St L 55-75 Record: 11-6 (3-2) RPI: 46
Vs UAB W 61-56 Record: 10-7 (2-3) RPI: 159
@ Charlotte L 46-52 Record; 11-4 (2-2) RPI: 51
@ ODU Record: 13-3 (3-1) RPI: 37

So the team's best wins of the season based off RPI are Norfolk St and UAB. Okay....

The Thundering Herd's starting Five

04 Wheeler, Savannah G 5'6" Fr 12.4 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.3 spg, 39.6 FG%, 29.3 3P%, 84.1 FT%, 27.3 mpg

Top Bench
00 Sivils, Kia G 5'7" So 3.1 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 1.3 apg, 36.7 FG%, 27.3 3P%, 42.1 FT%, 20.5 mpg
32 Shy, Paige G 5'10" Fr 2.3 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 0.2 apg, 22.7 FG%, 18.4 3P%, 71.4 FT%, 10.8 mpg

Freshman Savannah Wheeler was the 2019 Miss Kentucky basketball and I think she is going to be a really good player in this conference. Already she leads the team in ppg and assists.
So let's get this out of the way. 42..2% of the team's overall shots are from behind the arc. And consider that starter Ashley Saintigene hasn't taken a three point attempt all year, that shows you how much they rely on the three. Saintigene by the way is a beast on defense, averaging 3 block per game and is has a career field goal percentage of just over 50%. They are known as a defensive team too. (4th in conference)

Ast/ TO ratio:
Marshall: 0.9, ODU: 0.8

Marshall is a team that you have to guard the three point line first and foremost. They are a solid rebounding team. So this could be a fun game for the Monarchs. It was nice to see Dejah Carter have her best game of the season against WKU. (10 points in 15 minutes) Hopefully she can build off that. But right now ODU has three players that average double digits. Morris with 11.9 ppg, Wayne 10.8, Edwards 10.0, and Amari Young averages 9.2 ppg. That makes this team such a challenge to guard. We are playing with a high degree of confidence right now. They are a lot of fun to watch. Let's just keep on rolling. Go Monarchs!

Con USA Standings

Best of luck with this game. Not a tall team, so Monarch should have a rebound edge. With a rebounding advantage, ODU should be able to get the ball out and down the floor quickly.

Ladies give up 15 point lead (only scored 2 points in the 3rd) to eventually win by 11.

Not a pretty game to watch, especially in 3rd quarter, but a win is a win. 14-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play isn’t shabby. Way too many missed foul shots for a team that usually doesn’t miss that many. On to Florida for a couple of games. [/b]

Solid win. But how in the heck do we only score 2 points in the whole 3rd quarter? Pretty sad, I would say. But, just win baby, just win!

Yeah, got too close for comfort when the ladies only scored two points in the 3rd quarter. It felt like the wheels were beginning to unravel. But this goes to the point I made under a separate thread a couple or so weeks ago. We are not quite there yet, but the ladies are beginning to find ways to either hold on to leads or conjure the will of a championship team to help carry them through to a dub. Although the game wasn't pretty, progress is gradually being made and I love seeing the ladies develop the tenacity of a winner. Go Monarchs!

You're seeing the difference between having a real basketball coach (Nikki) and a cheerleading coach (KB). BTW, decent crowd yesterday. Love seeing some of the new football staff showing their support for the ladies...
