Temple's prospects looking a little brighter after winning @ UCF, 62-58.

Temple's RPI has moved up to #14 after their two recent wins.

The Owls are now 5-2 in road games (3-0 away, 2-2 neutral).

Their NET-based Q1/Q2 record is currently 3-3 (1-1, 2-2, 3-0, 3-0).

Their RPI-based Q1/Q2 record is currently 4-2 (1-2, 3-0, 1-1, 4-0).

Keep in mind that RPI is not used at all by the selection committee. It is no where on the team sheets

True. I only include it because the site lists NET and RPI Q1/Q2, and because it's of interest to know how others compare with the NET.

Temple’s half-court offense did not look good today. Offense took a step backwards. Better shooters not shooting often enough.

Temple shot poorly on two’s, and it’s half-court defense didn’t protect the rim.

It’s pressure defense in the second-half primarily responsible for Temple winning the game. Till Dre Perry and Moorman become more involved in Temple’s half court offense, Temple will continue to have trouble going forward winning conference games.

62-58 = a defensive struggle.

The important thing for the Owls is that they and their rookie Head Coach found a way to win their third away game (3-0) against a very well coached team with which they were pretty evenly matched. It's the first time they've started out 1-0 in conference play in years, and it positioned them well heading into one of their toughest stretches this season.

McKie continues to win games by playing a 10 man rotation whenever possible. Not every player plays well in every game, and at least one is typically out with an injury, but in 9 games, various other guys stepped up when needed to pull out a win.

Impressively, the Owls won the game despite the fact that PF Forrester had an off-performance, while Center D. Moore could only play 3 minutes, and PF Arashma Parks was out with an aggravation to his shoulder injury (will be "day by day"). PFs Perry, Hamilton, and Moorman stepped up vs the Knights.

Similarly, guards A. Moore and Scott were ineffective, but Josh Pierre-Louis stepped up to bolster the back court play of Rose and Josh's brother Nate (NPL).

.
5 of the next 8 games are against top 100 teams:

@Tulsa (Q2?), vs. Houston(Q2)/Tulane/Wichita State(Q1), @ SMU (Q2?), vs. Cincy (Q3?), @ Penn (Q2), @ UConn (Q2)

If Temple could win 5 of the next 8 (4 home/4 away), they could get to 14-7 and Q1/Q2 6-6. To get to 21-10, there are 7 winnable games after that, unless they can upset @Memphis, @Wichita State, or vs. Villanova down the stretch.

Winning 6 of the next 8 could get them to 15-6 and Q1/Q2 7-5, giving the Owls a chance to finish the regular season with 22 or 23 wins and an NCAA quality Q1/Q2 of 8-8.

Looks like bubble city for some time to come.

I don't know which 12 people have voted for UCF, but they should be forced to watch the final 8 minutes of all of our close games as punishment. We will be lucky to make the NIT this year.

They may need to work on closing out games, but Dawkins is a very good coach, and UCF has been on an upward trajectory.

The Knights led a good (#36 or #42 NET; #14 RPI) Temple team until the closing minutes. They should win most of their home conference games and some away games, and might surprise some people.

I believe a more realistic appraisal is that Temple has won only three of it’s last five games (not that Temple is 3-0 on the road), that UCF is a rebuilding team, and that Temple had to rely solely on it’s pressure defense to win the game 62-58.

Should also be acknowledged, that Temple’s’s offense was virtually non-existent, except for Temple’s three-point shooting and advantage at the foul-line.

Too early to make any prediction about final conference results, until quite a few more conference and remaining non-conference games are played.

The GAMER model is currently predicting that Temple will end up with 22 regular season wins, and that might be attainable.

Temple has 10 more home games this season. If they can go 8-2 or 9-1 at home, that would get them to 17 or 18 wins. There are also 6 or 7 potentially winnable away games, and a potential 1st round win in the AAC tournament.

To win 22 games, Temple would need to go 13-6 the rest of the way, or 13-8, including the AAC tournament.

The matchup @ UCF was one of six tough, but potentially winnable away games this season (along with UConn, Cincy, SMU, Penn, and Tulsa). Winning that game and being 3-0 in away games to date suggests that the Owls have a shot to win 22 games and snag an 11 seed in March.

Temple will probably have to win at least 5 more away games to have any chance at making the NCAA tournament. They might be able to pick up wins @ ECU and @ Tulane, but will need to take 3 of 5 games @ UConn, Cincy, SMU, Penn, and Tulsa, or 4 plus a 1st round AAC win.

The Owls will probably have to win at least one of three home games vs. Houston, Wichita State, and Villanova, while sweeping the rest. Two of those three would be huge.

1) it’s an absolute pleasure to wade through dozens of posts about teams not even relevant or included in this poll. I know it’s been said elsewhere but you clowns ought to either kiss and make up or GTFO. IT’s way past tiresome.

2) From waaaay out in the bleachers Ima say SMU. As much as I want to see Jank replaced I’d be thrilled if he proves us doubters wrong and this team finishes among the concensus top three.... Memphis, WSU, Houston.

The whupping administered to USF was SMU’s best 30 or so minutes this season. Jank has used every excuse available following both defeats by decent teams AND defeats of crappy ones. He has said (and I agree) that this will be a late-blooming team due to all the new faces AND the late additions of Davis and Jasey.
One concern has been the lack of a bench and both Bandoumel and Ray showed up at home against USF. That’s encouraging.

It’s a very narrow margin of error but I’ll speculate that if SMU stays undefeated at home, wins the ones they should on the road and slides into the AAC tourney semis they’ll squeak in.

A one home-game conference sample ain’t much to go on but we hopin’ here.

I hope so, too.

Under a lesser Head Coach, UCF would be going through a typical "rebuilding year," with little chance of finishing over .500 for the season.

With Johnny Dawkins at the helm, UCF actually has a real chance to make the NIT field. If not, they will probably be one of the stronger teams in the CBI field, which is not a trivial consideration, given the boost that USF got out of winning last season's CBI.

Temple was fortunate to pull out a last minute win at UCF. Good teams like SMU, UConn, Tulsa, and Cincy may not be quite so fortunate.

Looking at the way WSU had to fight to win @ ECU, the Knights may even be able to hold serve against the Shockers if they play a perfect game or if the chips fall their way.

A 9-2 SMU team is doing great things for the conference, which is now once again firmly ensconced as one of the "Major 7" BB conferences, after a slightly bumpy start.

Temple sustained a recent loss to Missouri at home, and Miami on a neutral court. Some of the teams you have Temple beating are better than those teams. Temple’s scoring and opponent points scored have fluctuated widely as of late. I’m concerned going forward about Temple shooting 2’s poorly, and making excessive turnovers in the UCF.

Better to wait till Temple plays way more games, rather than rely on computer models that predicts in many instances that Temple will play many close games. No reason to give any credence to computer models as they are always being updated.
