RE: FOX WINS MOUNTAIN WEST RIGHTS FROM ESPN
Not a lot of detail yet, but its looking like there is the potential for their level of exposure in this deal to surpass the AAC's exposure with ESPN. The devil is in the details---but it looks like they could have national OTA games on FOX and CBS. Thats a pretty big deal as far as exposure goes.

From the Ourand and Smith SBJ piece: "CBS will take at least three games to its network channel. Fox games could appear on FS1 or the network"

Nice exposure and a bigger number than most anyone here expected, definitely more than I expected.

Nice deal for the mwc

not even close, i just mentioned this in the other thread

they just sent 80% of their good games to cbssn and fs2 ... 70% of their basketball game and 25% of their football arent accounted for any tv network, and they have to go look for a 3rd tier partner willing to air bad content

there are only 3 confirmed OTA games (3 with cbs...and from the wording in the release fox has the option to put it on fs1 or fox, and isnt required to specifically put it on fox)

thats less than what we had in the old deal

I believe I said it has the "potential" to give better exposure. They have a minimum of 12 games on FOX or FS1---so they could potentially end up with several OTA FOX games each year. Additionally, "3 CBS OTA" games is the minimum they are required to show on CBS OTA----the MW could easily end up with more than 3---especially now that the SEC will be leaving CBS. We need to see how their new deal actually plays out for a few seasons before we can say its "not even close". The SEC leaving CBS could be a huge factor for both the AAC and the MW---as thats 15 OTA slots opening on CBS OTA and as many as 15 OTA slots closing on ABC (they arent sticking that #1 SEC game on ESPN2). On the up side, there are now about 20 or so new openings on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU due to the Mouse losing the MW.

Time for top AAC to get on the horn with Thompson and ask for a BS-u type deal

RE: FOX WINS MOUNTAIN WEST RIGHTS FROM ESPN
This is a great deal for the mwc overall.
- They definitely got paid. They continue (2019 ratings numbers) to get about 30% of the AAC's viewers and got around 50% of the $$$
- Exposure - OTA and top cable linear (ESPN, ESPN2, FS1) better than they were, and approaching the linear exposure we were happy about in the AAC - ESPN deal. Time will tell how many of even BSU get Fox vs FS1 etc.
- And they did it in a shorter timeframe than the AAC 12-year deal. I remain pro- the AAC deal, but my biggest reservation was that I would have preferred 8 or even 10 years to the 12 year deal - not least because 8 years / 2028 seemed the sweet spot to capitalize on the next restructure.

Caveats on the mwc declaring victory:
- Can't wait for the mwc fans' tortuous logic that $3.5M = $7M
- They still have late kicks for that money. Remember all the unhappiness that 8pm-11pm in the mountains in October-November hurt ticket sales? On balance the money makes sense (when your average attendance is 20k, you need an earlier kickoff time to bring a sustained increase of 25%-30% ticket sales to offset a million dollars in TV revenue) but there are medium to longterm effects.
- Streaming is IN PLAY for the mwc...waiting for revisionism on the (admittedly disproven) $2M production costs.
- Still have money distribution inequities. Right below the self-congratulatory thread on the mwc board is a slightly less active thread bitching about Boise's sweetheart deal.

So let's see this coming season what actually gets on what networks, in what timeslots, and what ratings numbers they get, and what attendance is, and what gets streamed.

Wow the MWC will actually get games on CBS and FOX OTA and get 3.75 mil a year? Damn fine deal for them.
Only 6 years...
Retain their 3rd tier rights?
12 years and ESPN plus for the AAC...well now I’m not really sure about anyone from the MWC coming to the AAC after all...

we have games on cba and abc ota,
and the mwc would love to get the 60% of their revenue sports not picked up by this deal on espn+

10 football games a year on cbs, fox and fs1...atleast 6 of which contractually, potentially all 10 could go to boise...

the rest of the MWC which are going to cbssn, fs2 and likely stadium (facebook) will keep them from wanting to leave?

Lol SDSU, UNLV and UNM basketball 3rd their rights will be worth something to the local affiliates in those respective markets. No way Facebook stadium gets any of those games

SDSU, UNLV and UNM tier 2 rights is on fs2 the worst rated nationally broadcast sports channel..theyve stopped sending their ratings to Neilsen because it was so bad, but before they stopped in 2015-2016 fs2 averaged 1-4k viewers a game (and that was with big east games)...(for context espnu averages 150k-300k around that time, espnnews 40k-100k)

fox and cbs didnt want the tier 3 or theyd be included in the deal...espn+ is their best case scenerio buyt we were just hating on that ..local only is an option, but they are likely to want some national option........stadium (facebook) who they already have a relationship with, the mountain west digital network (conference website) ..or some completely out of the blue app like dazn

With the SEC gone off CBS I sure hope so.

we've always be 100% espn owned...we worked a contract through espn to allow us to sublicense games to cbs...in the old deal

cbs has the ability to do that again with our current deal...but nothing has happened on that front yet

With ESPN + I doubt there will be any sub licenses to CBSSN.

espn's president spoke about it...he says they are willing to sublicense games to cbs or local networks and before july all things would be talked about

aresco in interviews has indirectly hinted he wants as little cbssn as possible because of its limited availability, and loving the idea of the majority of the aac in one place but would like to retain the cbs OTAs we have

something ive noticed is that cbssports isnt tryng to replace the AAC slots .. your commish said its the same amount of cbssn games as the last deal..mwc has excess content they could have bought....they arent bidding on the g5

my guess is that cbs is going to try and re-up on our deal with the same terms and slighlty larger payout...even though we just want the otas

Nice catch. Thats actually a pretty interesting point. Sub-licensing to CBS-SN is likely worthless to us as far as additional revenue (unless this deal is radically different on that issue), but it is additional linear coverage which is always good. Its also another way for ESPN to make a money off our content.

CBSSN could fill those slots with CUSA games as they are the main rights holder for CUSA.

aresco in interviews has indirectly hinted he wants as little cbssn as possible because of its limited availability, and loving the idea of the majority of the aac in one place but would like to retain the cbs OTAs we have

something ive noticed is that cbssports isnt tryng to replace the AAC slots .. your commish said its the same amount of cbssn games as the last deal..mwc has excess content they could have bought....they arent bidding on the g5

my guess is that cbs is going to try and re-up on our deal with the same terms and slighlty larger payout...even though we just want the otas

Nice catch. Thats actually a pretty interesting point. Sub-licensing to CBS-SN is likely worthless to us as far as additional revenue (unless this deal is radically different on that issue), but it is additional linear coverage which is always good. Its also another way for ESPN to make a money off our content.
CBSSN could fill those slots with CUSA games as they are the main rights holder for CUSA.

that c-usa deal is active now...between this year and next year (no longer on cbssn)..cbbssn hasnt added anything that could be seen as replacements..

but like i noted, aresco has pointed that we might not want cbssnn..and just want cbs..who knows what happens

The devil is in the details---but it looks like they could have national OTA games on FOX and CBS. Thats a pretty big deal as far as exposure goes.

not even close, i just mentioned this in the other thread

they just sent 80% of their good games to cbssn and fs2 ...

At what time slots? Late night? UH is in the west, who gets picked for those slots.

Misread the post. Sorry.

Does ESPN own 100% of the AAC contract or does CBS & CBS SN still get some games like now?
With the SEC gone off CBS I sure hope so.

With adding the MWC, CBS Sports has options.
