OT: What happened to once Big East Miami Canes
Miami was clearly the team of 80s. They won 5 national championships. They almost repeated it 2002 against Ohio State.

They are in the most fertile recruiting soil (South Florida) and they have the pedigree and history.

Why couldn't they remain competitive? Is it coaching? Is it administration? They are in a really big market.

They are the U and they were one school "revolution" (even with the bad boy image). They are the best example of pop culture and college football. They were COOL.

I live in Florida and I am a UCF fan. But I am just wondering the demise of UMiami Football.

Very OT.

They have lost what made them for he U when they moved out of the orange Bowl near campus and moved across town. They lost their mojo and what made them the U. They should have just built a new stadium for themselves when the dolphins moved out on the site. A 50000 person stadium would have been perfect for them.

Plus they can’t cheat as easily as they used too.

Did not hire Frost.

Hiring Diaz is a step in the right direction. Give him a couple of years, and you will see UM contend for the ACC title.

Can Miami ever bring back their program to once it was? They are in the most fertile recruiting territory in the country. They have the history. They are in a big city which guarantees a large fan base. Is the U ever coming back?

they are no longer brash and cool. they are quite lame actually. their cool factor died when they went to the ACC. now SEC teams are taking south florida players that wouldn't have dared to reject THE U of old.

I’d say the Nevin Shapiro thing set them back. They lost some of the successful culture that turned into individual success and look at me. The current Miami is not a family that fights for each other. This season the back and forth at the QB position really split the team and the fan base.

I don’t think Diaz is the guy. If you’re Miami you shouldn’t be allowed to lose to FIU and keep your job. The FSU win saved Diaz and he’s lucky. He has no control of the team. Rumors that Williams skipped practice and still got playing time in the game. I think they need to convince Mario Cristobal to come home to his Aluma Mater.

I don’t think a “player” coach that tries to be buddy buddy with these guys are going to work. The personalities at the U are too big. They need a disciplinarian, not some guy who gave them a chain that they can post on the gram

The Nevin Shapiro hoes and blow are gone.
The local Orange Bowl mystic is gone.
The easy Big East wins are gone.
The great recruits have gone back to Florida and Florida State (Their criminal records have gone back up).
The hefty NCAA sanctions from past cheating experiences has taken its toll.

Simply put, they are not getting the dudes they once got. Everyone is recruiting FL now, including the SEC, B10, other ACC schools and a couple In the B12.

What happened to Nebraska?
Notre Dame?
Penn State?
Tennessee?
Michigan?

Nebraska won 3 natty's [2 outright] in the 90's. If it weren't for the hiring of Nick Saban you could add Alabama to the list too. Top programs can't always maintain the highest level of success. It can be due to any number of factors. Not the least of which is coaching. Who did Miami, FL have at the helm during their chip runs?

Howard Schnellenberger [1983]
Jimmy Johnson [1987]
Dennis Erickson [1989, 1991]
Larry Coker/Butch Davis [2001]

That's a select group of head coaches. I included Butch Davis because Larry Coker [Miami OC] took over after Butch left to coach the Cleveland Browns. Butch had built Miami up to be a national contender and Larry benefited from that.

Who has coached Miami, FL since then?

Randy Shannon
Al Golden
Mark Richt
Manny Diaz

Miami got away with many violations during their rise and heyday. The coaches after that, such as Shannon, Richt, and especially Golden, were hired to clean up the cesspool. Problem has been the donors and admin are extremely impatient and expect national title contenders immediately.

No question the culture changed some but those coaches from Shannon forward are not in the same class as the previous coaches IMO.

You cant compare any of those programs to that coke filled, ho paid trash fiasco that was Miami.

Pure trash mercenaries. A stain on the game.

RE: OT: What happened to once Big East Miami Canes
Donna Shalala decided that the University of Miami should be an elite educational institution instead of a football team with a college attached. She more or less succeeded. She emphasized the football program having character (Shannon, etc.), cleaned up the booster issues (Shapiro etc.), and reigned in the football team. And she succeeded at building a top notch university. I feel like Miami will be the next institution invited to the AAU, which was not something really on anyone's radar before Shalala started as president.

Donna Shalala: University of Miami presidency (2001–2015)

Her decision to abandon the BIG EAST was the beginning of the end for Miami(FL), look at their records and scandals since then.

Again, changing culture and self-policing for infractions are a part of it. Miami sure as heck isn't the only program to have those issues. That said, anyone who believes that Shannon, Al Golden et al. have the same coaching chops as the ones prior to them is not very well informed.

No. They had a thing back in the day from playing some big games. But Miami's only real rival now is FSU and to a lesser degree UF. I'm sure BC and Syracuse want to see some sort of rivalry, but those are minor at best.

They've embraced the ACC culture, which emphasizes basketball and academics.
