Time to speculate if Freeze will leave after the season? I don't expect an SEC school to hire him as I've heard that a school hiring him would have to get the conference's blessing and that's a long shot based on how he left. I won't rule it out but I'll consider them behind other conferences.
So who are these other conferences? I will rule out the Pac 12, Big Ten, G5, and any other independent. Freeze likes the south, ruling out half the ACC and some of the Big 12. Let's look at some schools who may fire their coach after the year:
ACC
I really don't see any jobs opening up here right now. Florida State won't fire their coach after one year. Miami looks good enough barring a complete collapse that should get Diaz another year (I don't think they're "back" as everyone claims). I think Babers at Syracuse has too big of a buyout and Freeze wouldn't go there. Louisville has a new coach recently who did well last year even if they are really struggling this season. I don't think Duke would get rid of Cutcliff without a scandal or something really bad going down. Nobody else really looks like they are in trouble at this time. If Clemson loses Dabo to the NFL or Alabama, I wouldn't expect Freeze to be their choice when they could have almost anyone.
Big 12
Does Texas pull the trigger? I'm 50/50 on whether they do. I could see them hiring Freeze. They are DESPERATE to get back on top of the football world and it must eat them up that Oklahoma has completely lapped them over and over after Mack Brown's departure. They had a lot of trouble hiring after Mack left; Saban rejected their full court press and had to settle for Strong which went very poorly. Then they settled for a G5 coach (Herman) when a school like Texas should be able to poach almost anyone.
Oklahoma could open up if Riley goes to the NFL. I don't think they would go for Freeze as they are one of the tops right now and should have their pick of the choices. Baylor just changed coaches last year and Texas Tech is in year two with their coach. Maybe Les Miles gets canned at Kansas but I think he'd be too expensive to get rid of right now. I thought that was a bad hire when it happened and it isn't looking any better after 1.5 years.
SEC
Let's get the boring ones out of the way: Vanderbilt could make a change even early in the coach's tenure because they are so bad. But that's pretty expected there and they don't seem to care about anything besides baseball. Does Tennessee make a change? They may be really disappointing (as always) but they have a killer recruiting class coming in and may want to try to keep it all together and run it back for one more year with Pruitt. Barring an epic collapse, I'd give him one more year.
South Carolina is interesting. I don't think Muschamp is the answer and I'm a little surprised he's lasted as long as he has. If they make a move, I think Freeze would be near the top of their list and Freeze would be interested. Maybe they would prefer to try to steal Venerables from Clemson, which is smart but risky. South Carolina isn't a premium job but Freeze was at Ole Miss so he's used to winning at a less prestigious football school.
The most intriguing school is Auburn. I do think they clean house there unless some weird things happen and Auburn finishes with a NY6 bowl win or something unlikely. Would Freeze be a candidate there? If I were Auburn, he would be. He's used to beating Alabama and has winning history in the SEC West. I think Auburn would be perfect for Freeze and Freeze would be perfect for Auburn. I just don't know if it would happen.
I don't see a whole lot out there that Freeze would be interested in. He's been at Arkansas State, Ole Miss, and now Liberty. He graduated from Southern Miss. Liberty is the clear outlier for good reason. He's likely to go south, and I just don't see many avenues in which he gets there after the season. I'm not guaranteeing Freeze will be coaching on our sidelines next season, but I would be surprised if he wasn't as of right now.
