Turns out that hiring a high school coach whose only college experience is grad assistant work isn't a good idea. Also, not too often you see a G5 coach fired the same season they beat an SEC school (albeit Vanderbilt).

He did a lot of good fundraising for the school. Got money for a practice facility and raise the academic standing of the team.
He would make a good deputy AD.

Will be very interesting to see what kind of hire UNLV makes. With the new Raiders stadium on the way, the school has great resources for recruiting moving forward.

They are in a recruiting black hole in a general area that isn’t all in on football. Ask the UTEP folks what it’s like to have nice facilities, but a non-cartel recruiting budget and a less than ideal location.

There isn’t a magic fix for UNLV other than hiring the right guy and suffering along with him as he builds something out of nothing.

UNLV can easily recruit California with the right coach. It’ll be easier with the brand new stadium.

They can also recruit Arizona and Texas. The problem is, so can a lot of other FBS programs, and half of them have a lot more money to do it with.

It’s a lot easier to build a winner at the non-cartel level if you have strong recruiting grounds in your backyard. UNLV doesn’t. It’s going to take a very creative coach who is as skilled at fundraising as he is at coaching to produce results there.

There are good coaches who’ve been fired out there (Riley, Bielema, Zook).

California has a ton of players and LA is just a few hours drive. They’re going to scoop up a lot of talent once the Raiders are in town. 04-cheers

Nevada has decent recruits, they just get raided hard as a state. Top players would rather go to even an iffy P5 than stay home and play for a bad MWC program like UNLV, and who could blame them?

Graham should be #1 on UNM's list. He can recruit Texas and California. He may not have succeed at ASU, but based on his results at Rice and Tulsa, I think UNM could do a lot worse. That or they need to hire whoever Davie's OC was when they had their good years running the Pistol-based triple option.

This should prob be on the David thread, but...

The Georgia Southern OC, Bob DeBesse.

Their rushing stats with him at UNM:

2013 - 4th
2014 - 4th
2015 - 9th
2016 - 1st
2017 - 24th

He got fired after the lackluster 2017 season. A little about their offensive attack:

Yeah, it's a heck of an offense. Somewhat similar to what Willie Fritz does as well. But both are based to some degree on Rich Rod's offense at WVU. I miss that real spread option look with the QB running with the slot receiver for an option and the WR motioning into the backfield to create a triple option look. That was a lot more entertaining than nonstop zone reads.

er

...if all the traditional corporate sponsors don’t simply switch to the raiders and forget about UNLV. Then there is the issue of a school drawing flies playing in a cavernous NFL palace.

It’s 45 miles from downtown Las Vegas to the state line. Another 100 miles puts you roughly in Victorville, which is still a couple of hours from downtown LA. More like three to six hours from Victorville during daylight. And your reward is competition from every FBS and FCS school north and west of Texas.

These are barriers, but not insurmountable ones to a good, creative coach.

Hmm, Todd Helton coaching football. Well, he did play QB at Tennessee. Probably more qualified than some of the clowns out there. 02-13-banana
