Utah 476,017 Top 26-50
California, Santa Cruz 147,536 Top 26-50
Dartmouth 204,360 Top 1-25
None of those Universities are being considered for the 12th member of the AAC ...

The UC system is far and away the best state university system in the country. UC schools place three institutions in the top-10 worldwide for STEM research and education (UC Berkeley, UCSD, UCLA).
Every school in the AAC should strive to be AAU members whether as an aspirational goal or a concrete milestone.
I completely agree that the AAC should strive to be AAU members, we can start by adding Buffalo (AAU Member) as the 12th member of the AAC and I would argue that the SUNY System is as good if not better than the UC System...
The difference being that the SUNY System does not feature big time athletic programs, but rather places it's emphasis on education.
No No No No! When will you people learn that academics and success on the field are completely different?? If the happen to coincide, then great. But in no way, shape or form is Buffalo a worthy AAC candidate.

If you asked people outside of the United States to compare the relative academic merits of the UC system and the SUNY system (and I only use that so that it completely removes the athletics argument from the discussion), I bet you wouldn't find 10% of them who would say they're even in the same stratosphere. In fact, I would bet that most people in general would struggle to name more than SUNY campuses. Sure, most would probably pull off Buffalo and Stony Brook, and then they'd start fidgeting and staring at their shoes. Most probably aren't aware that Cornell is affiliated with SUNY.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say SUNY is a bad system, but the UC system is top notch and it's not even close. I would probably argue the public universities in Texas would rank ahead of SUNY, too.
Across the entire SUNY system, they've had 16 Nobel Prizes:
https://www.rfsuny.org/rf-news/nobel-laureates/
Berkeley alone has 39 who were on their faculty:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_No...,_Berkeley
And you can count an additional 19 just between UCLA and UCSD:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_No...ffiliation
If you go by research funding, here are some relevant statistics for you:
https://ncsesdata.nsf.gov/profiles/site?...ce&ds=herd
#3 = UCSF ($1.4BB)
#7 = UCSD ($1.1BB)
#12 = UCLA ($1.1BB)
#13 = Cornell ($984MM)
#26 = UC Berkeley ($771MM)
#30 = UC Davis ($738MM)
#59 = Buffalo ($402MM)
#65 = UC Irvine ($361MM)
By no stretch of the imagination could anybody legitimately "argue that the SUNY System is as good if not better than the UC System."
