Exactly, and you just saw why PJ left here.....did you see that field overflowing with fans going crazy???? That’s atmosphere!
We couldn’t recreate that on our best Saturday afternoon (or Tuesday night)

We're here to stay, the admin loves the MAC and so does most of the fanbase apparently. This is exactly why students don't go to the games, no atmosphere, not fun...
Wrong. Admin tried keeping PJF. Admin would jump to be in the P5. But the P5 isn't so excited about bringing new members in, and we don't have the budget to outbid the P5 for PJF.
Let me know when we're in the Big 10, hosting Penn St, UMichigan, Michigan St, Ohio St, etc, and you'll see atmospheres like that consistently.
Also, Monmouth, Georgia St, CMU, had great atmospheres and lot of people were having fun. If you don't like being a fan of a MAC school, then go ahead to Walmart & buy some Michigan St/UMIchigan/Minnesota gear.

Not sure what's wrong w/ being 1st place in a MAC division when you're in the MAC. Hard to be leading the Big 10 West when we're not in the Big 10.

Exactly what I was thinking. Okay to be talking about Fleck & be excited, but taking it a step further and bashing Western Michigan football is a step too far.

You can't will yourself out of the MAC, unless you want to be independent (bad idea). You need an invite from another conference first, and that's not happening to us or any other MAC school.

On a side note, since this thread is about non-WMU games anyhow... If anyone wants to witness a true DEFCON-5 message board meltdown, head over to the MSU board.

One CAN make it big -- but the problem being in B10-land is that you need to have a Consistent GOOD team. Capable of beating MSU or UM in one of their non-optimal years when you're having an optimal year. AND when you're not having an optimal year, being 8-4.
Basically being like present-day Boise who's almost always ranked somewhere (no need to be old-school Boise who was REALLY big). Consistency on that level.
We've had our moments. Back in optimal Darnell days, and with PJ. Maybe Lester (wishing/praying/hoping/sacrificing virgins) could bring us to that point in a few years? I'm not holding my breath though. But if we did, he'd stick around longer than other coaches would since it's his palace. He wouldn't have chosen Minnesota for $3.5m for 4 years over WMU for $3m for 10 years. I think at WMU he (unlike PJ and up-and-coming HCs) wouldn't have a great chance of turning around a flailing P5 into a division contender. Instead, IMO, WMU is where he'll get the most + have the most tolerance for him staying.

A P5 wouldn't bite on TL, but a MW or AAC team would/could bite.

I absolutely love that we are in a mid-major/non-power 5 conference. I've lived the UM experience for nearly 25 years -- after year five, I was over it. It's an over-hyped, expensive, pile of non-sense. It's NFL 2.0. Go to Walmart, buy a Michigan t-shirt, and you're now one of them.
WMU is what college football was meant to be: students and alumni. I travel from Ann Arbor to Kalamazoo for an hour and a half for that experience. Fleck was able to bring our program to the heights of D-1 showing what we capable of -- I can only hope Lester can do the same...

100% spot on!
I love the midmajor chip on my shoulder, and wouldn't change my WMU degree, or my rooting interest for anything. The opportunity to play and potentially beat P5 schools is priceless; particularly against UM and MSU.
I would much rather experience a game at Waldo than at any of the P5 venues. I am glad my kids attended midmajors too. Both of them had the option to go to UM, and neither had any interest at all. I brainwashed them well.

OK genius. Where would WMU go if they left the MAC? You got really deep pockets to finance a move to a 'better' conference? You forget that a conference has to WANT a new member, there needs to be a desire to add them, that they bring something to the new conference. I don't see any of them lining up for WMU or ANY MAC school. Maybe Buffalo.
As for PJ, I have stayed out of the back and forth because I'm not invested in him and or his success at a B1G school. He did great things at WMU in his short tenure, then moved onward and upward. He gone. Watching yesterday, I saw a well coached team that believed it would win and played lights out, which reminded me of our teams under PJ. They're legit.

My wife’s nephew went to Minnesota and was in the Marching Band, so we have been to quite a few games there (including when WMU played a few years ago). I have never seen anything even close to the atmosphere they had in that stadium Saturday. Every game I attended there the stadium was half empty and the crowd was kind of kind of dull. That was definitely something special for the Gophers yesterday.
