I listed the above games from UC's best seasons from the past 12 years. Games UC basically survived, needed a miracle, over came some sort of meltdown or injury. Good teams find ways to find ways to win no questions asked.
You need to add Fresno State to the 2009 list. The Bulldogs ran all over us with 290 yards to our 57 that game. The game was close 21-17 until the 4th quarter. I remember it being an extremely frustrating game.
Greg(?) Carey, a former QB from Elder who switched to defensive end, intercepted a pass at the line of scrimmage that preserved the win for UC after Fresno State had advanced to about the UC 15 yard line with about two minutes to go and with the chance to go ahead. Fresno had a RB whose name I cannot remember but he played about six years in the NFL and was both durable and a very, very good runner. Fresno always had good QB's as well.

Love that angle. The intensity in @CoachFick's face when the camera abruptly focuses on him...priceless.
So look... I know that I am "out of sorts" right now... On Thursday, I learned my mother is dying of renal failure and Friday and Saturday I drove down to be with her. That alone is enough to screw with emotions. The score of the Bearcats game, which I did not get to see (because I had more important things to tend to) but which I followed via ESPN.com's "Game tracker" thing did not help.
All is not "gloom and doom" and I know that. Life just kind of sucks at the present time.

The bottom line is you do whatever it takes to get outta dodge with the "W." They went with what worked and so did ECU. I liked his comment, and believe him wholeheartedly, that they will be a better team because of how this game played out. You need a few games like this to get punched in the mouth when not at your best and fight through it. It's not good for the stomachs of the coaching staff and us fans but I think it will build some grit and character in these kids.
I do think the one issue with this team - still pretty young overall - remains how they handle success. They were 11-2 last year and one of only two AAC teams to win their bowl game. They came in this season with some hype and high expectations and once you get ranked other teams are going to try and play their best to knock you off. You take a team like UCF over the past several years and they've carried themselves quite well with the rankings, hype, and expectations. I feel like our guys are still growing into that mindset and it may be next year when we really see that take shape across the whole team.
Here's another thing that sux. Throw out BDF's first season and he's 18-3 since. Most of us picked the Cats to finish 9-3 this year but win a toilet bowl [10-3]. To keep the negative Nancy's at bay, let's assume the season finishes out that way so Fick's record after the past two seasons would conclude at [worst] 21-5. That is a trend projecting in an incredible direction for next season and beyond. With some of the recruit talent coming in you're talking about a UCF, Boise St type consistent level of success. Just sucks man.

Have we been a 5 TD favorite over an FBS team in recent memory? Ideal time to get some starters a blow in the second half especially for those knicked up.

Sorry.
Sorry to hear this Jerry. This really sucks. Life is more important than sports. I lost my grandmother a few months ago, I was born to a teen mother and she basically raised me for my first 8 years of life.
BTW... there are always going to be negative game thread posts in close games or games where UC plays below expectations. It's part of the emotions of being a fan. Also some fans are inherently pessimistic in how they watch games (my father was very much that way, though I'm probably the opposite). I like to call out some of the particularly absurd negative posts at times (it's in fun I promise), but don't let it take away from the success of the season so far. The last two years have been an incredible turnaround from the Tuberville disaster. UC is 12th in strength of record (a measure that tries to evaluate the strength of a teams wins). That tells you what a great season it has been. I hope everyone is enjoying it and I think despite some of the negativity that inevitably comes out, people are.

We'll probably be 50th after this weekend (thought I'd throw some pessimism in there! ).
Honestly, though, great post Mark! You are spot on. We live and die with our teams and sometimes we don't feel very confident after a not so great game. My father in law is a very pessimistic fan - "the Bearcats always play to the level of their opponent" - and don't get him started on the Bungholes (they live in eastern Indiana and now are Colts fans and watch "real football"). UC is my school and the Bearcats are my teams. I watch every game I can, even when they are painful. These past two seasons have been great and, even the one prior was pointing us in a positive direction. I was hoping for just a bowl game last year and hopefully competing for a championship this year. Fickell's Bearcats have exceeded my expectations.
