There were a lot of calls in favor of SMU and the TV people finally had to say something about it.
Feel for Joey after they stole his kick off return TD on a phantom block in the back. Then turn around later in the game and pick up a flag on SMU for a blatant block in the back. Not to mention ignoring a very blatant block in the back on SMU first TD and not to mention the facemask and horse collar on the same play in the first half with the game official looking straight at the play with nothing blocking his view.
Unfortunately that was a block in the back. Bad thing is, the actual block was in the front, but the blocker's helmet was behind the shoulders which is all they need to call a block in the back.
My issues were the no-calls against SMU. The facemask and several illegal blocks that were right in front of them and they didnt call them.
The guy being blocked turned as he was being blocked. A BS call that is not made against 'power' teams.

Ive seen that call made against power teams plenty of times. It is what it is, plenty to complain about with the game last night.

Still, it wasn't a block in the back.
What's next?
10 yard penalty for block in the side?
AAC officials have been shafting Memphis the last few years.
Maybe this will change?

RE: Ref. calls...?
What this game reminds me of is the UCF game where Henderson had that long TD called back on a totally bogus holding where they wasn't even anything close to a hold. Like the refs think "SMU is ranked higher so Memphis must be doing something illegal to win" and just throw a flag. Very suspicious. To wit, terrible calls against us
1. Reversed TD on 1st drive. Um, you can't see the nose of the ball on any of the replay angles so you can't tell definitively it didn't cross. Play should stand
2. Block in the black on runback: He really didnt block him he just ran in front of him and they hit. Terrible, terrible call.
3. Pass interferences against us for long SMU plays
4. the missed facemask (after calling back a TD on a weak holding call). I don't know how you miss it, by the way he was tackled the defender could only be holding his facemask.
5. The pooch punt where the defender grabbed the ball and threw it in the air into the endzone and they said it was down at the 2. Huh???? Is this a rule I'm not aware of where they give you the ball wherever the defender touches the ball and it doesn't matter if the ball then goes into the endzone?

You really want to die on a hill defending those refs? It was a BS call.

I hope we send some tape to the AAC. Cant we afford competent refs. I recognized some of those goobers, but I wont name them. Very fishy

RE: Ref. calls...?
Replay is a problem
Watching some plays right now. Gibson’s TD overturn looks like the right call but man it is hard to be 100% sure exactly when his elbow touched. Overturned
SMU then drives for a TD. They catch a ball around the Memphis 25 for a first down. Looks like a catch but ball hits ground while kid holding the ball and looks like ball moves a little. SMU runs quick play, which they should, no review at all
Joey’s overturn, everything else equal, cost Memphis from having about an 80% or better FG attempt to be what would now be 9-0
Change the standard from incontrovertible to IMMEDIATELY OBVIOUS
There are times where it is instantly clear that a knee was down or a ball bounced or a foot touched out of bounds etc. If not immediately obvious, give them 30 seconds, keep the play. Have replay reviewers able to get several angles quickly, and if they have to rerun a tape Zapruder style, then the call stands
A few very close calls might end up wrong. But that seems to be happening now

read thru the game thread. i was active there along with others. we all saw it the same. and i definitely showed no bias ... even calling out Memphis plays and/or SMU ones which were valid, like the one amazing catch (Rice, i think) on the sideline, when initially the refs called it out ... it wasn't. it was a catch all the way ...
With an obvious push off by Rice.

I think the AAC, and all of the G5 programs, are apt to try and protect their highest ranked team. The P5 schools are going to get their money, but the G5 conference that slots a team in the NYD bowl gets the 4 million dollar payout. UCF was that team last year, and SMU was positioning itself to be that squad this year.

J/K Win it fair or not at all.

If AAC ever wants to be considered a power conference, they have to invest in better officiating.
I don' think the refs have any agenda, I just think they are super incompetent.

When they showed it on the big screen I didn’t notice how bad that was or that a referee was right there
Holy crap
We kicked a FG on that drive but clearly should have had a few more opportunities to get a TD
Man what a miss
Then later they see pass interferences on Memphis for, er, not touching receivers and turning for under thrown passes
Really bad last night
Feels like it should have been something like 63-34

All of those were bad, but #4 and #5 were the absolute worst. No way that was NOT a touchback!

I'm assuming he was filing a report with the officer for aggravated assault on Gainwell's behalf.
(But seriously, I read somewhere he threw a beer)

I’m no conspiracy theorist, but it’s happening every single week.
I think that was the one where they called it "PI for handholding" or something like that. That's how bad they thought that call was.
