It really was. I don't think it gets the appreciation it deserves. Maybe because most of the sequels were pretty weak. Although I do like the end of the 2nd movie.
Climate change is the new nuclear war boogeyman
While what you say is true, the ramifications of it are hilarious, since the nuclear nightmare whether by war, or accident, is still the much more likely of the two, and by a wide margin.
Planet of the Apes lost it with me after the 2nd installment. I had a hard enough time with Roddy McDowell as an ape (as he was irritating enough as a human) but when Paul Williams became one I called it quits.
Still, Bullet's point is a valid one about suppression of negative news. However the culprits today are the corporations who don't like negative news to be broadcast or published for a variety of reasons not the least of which is news that might impact stock valuations or present their corporation in a bad light. One news company owned by a conglomerate sends all of their local publications to a central site to be edited, but not for truth, spelling, grammar, etc, but for information that impacts the parent organization.
Products that are feel good products aren't purchased as often in stressful times. So suppression of negativity in general is seen as productive for sales. People tend to get tighter with their cash when they sense a crisis.
The political crisis however serves another end. The more discontented the public, the less faith they have in government, the more likely they will be to turn to alternative sources for crisis avoidance or solutions. The IBC is, IMO, working toward becoming an alternative to elective government and are behind many of the world's political crises because it makes them look like that solution. In a world without nation states, corporations would rule by edict.
