RE: Let's say that California law gets enacted most places
As some have said, this rule could lead to more transfers if G5 athletes prove themselves superior and P5 schools offer them endorsement money to transfer. But as for overall competitiveness, I think that will remain about as it is so long as the 85 scholarship limit in fb and 13 in mbb remain in place. If those go away then Texas, Alabama, Ohio St, etc, will each have 150 fb players on full scholarship and the rest of us are playing club fb.

in ~3 yrs. when the current tv contracts expire, none of that will exist in the next version of realignment....

the ncaa in football and hoops is over as you know it.....it just hasn't happened yet....

the leftovers will form whatever, and create a playoff system that doesn't involve any form of ncaa bs horsepuckey....

@capiche

The big boys want the ncaa to stick around because they need the facade of amateurism. The P5 have the best of both worlds now: they have convinced customers that they have a very valuable product, and convinced the customers that the people making the product don’t deserve workman’s comp or any other workplace protections that state and federal laws give to employees, including the rights to workplace organization that workers have in some states.

So they get all the profits, none of the liability. They don’t want to lose that.

The players becoming actual employees would be a huge disaster for them.

which is against NCAA 'rules'....

Correct, once the athlete's season starts they are not allowed any employment until it is completed.

Yep....I couldn't get any of the USM golfers to play in a 2 dollar nassua back in the late '70s and '80s at the 'goat ranch' for fear of losing their scholly....not even the Canucks...however, we partied our arse off....they made it up in a different way on 'other' dime....

we'll find out in ~3 yrs., eh?

Saban has already alluded to such....

it's why I told Monk, "this is a golden op if you stay for year 4." and why I told Carr, "you're in a pickle barrel."

do not underestimate the power of 'dark money'....

But thats just it--the rule actually undermines the 85 scholarship rule. Right now, Bama gets its pick of who they want---but they can only get 25. After that, its purely walk on opportunities.

But with this name and likeness rule, coach Saban can simply say to the potential player, "Dont worry about it being a being a non-scholarship slot---that wont be an issue for you. A guy named Billy Bob is going to talk to you about that."

Billly Bob, a Bama booster, will then explain how he is going to give that athlete a $35K check for an "appearance fee" at his daughters 3rd birthday party if the kid agrees to come to Bama as a "walk on". Now the athlete has enough money pay his tuition and get a free ride---just like any other "scholarship" player. Turns out, Billy Bobs's daughter celebrates her birthday numerous times each year. Using this sham, Bama could effectively have 105 players on "scholarship".
