I have.

Fresh Air in Macon, Fincher's in Warner Robins to name a couple. And honestly, I'll probably get stoned for this but I was never really impressed with Vandy's in Statesboro....not that it was bad, I've just had better.

Georgia Bob's here in Middle Georgia was also way better back when they were just in the gas station before they branched out to multiple locations.

Georgia bbq isn't for everyone though, I'll admit. But just because you're at a barbecue place in Georgia it isn't necessarily "Georgia barbecue" either.

Sounds more like you're a BBQ connoisseur.

Question: Is there one type (universal) of Georgia BBQ (meaning pork and sauce), or does it vary by region? Most people who have visited NC would be aware there are two distinct types of BBQ separated along an imaginary line between Durham and Lexington.

Typical Georgia barbecue (in my experience) is pork, smoked with pecan wood, and the sauce has a mustard and vinegar kick but is tomato based. Chopped pork is what's typical, and a lot of what I've seen is shoulder and hams mixed together.

Also Brunswick stew is a big thing here, even if it didn't initially start here. I've made it a lot with my dad in a huge cast iron kettle that would take hours to cook, and it's an actual stew....it can be a meal in and of itself cause it's so thick (think hash in South Carolina but better). Other areas use it as a way to use up pork leftovers but we always dedicated pork just to the stew.

My family used to make enough stew and sauce at one time to last us for the most part of the year. Those were some really busy days.

What you're looking for is a barbecue sandwich and a side of stew as the staple meal.

Now, you can get a lot of other stuff here in the state. What I'm talking about you probably won't really find in the Atlanta area though, although I haven't been to a lot of bbq places up there. Lots of people make good ribs and even brisket. But those don't fit under the umbrella of what I've seen as "Georgia style barbecue."

Arrived at the hospitality tent and enjoyed BBQ pulled pork and fixins' and peach cobbler. Enjoyed mingling with other Jag fans and yelling out some cheers prior to settling in our seats watching Jackson State and South during warm ups (not that they needed them, temp was 95+ Ds) and meeting some friendly JSU fans nearby. That was a great experience as those Tiger fans were a lot of fun and very congenial. The game was about the same as we expected as JSU played the Jags tough and never quit fighting. The Ladd games are soon to be history and it's sad to see the ole lady deteriorating and in BAD need of repair. Was once a pearl for the city as I saw my first game there in 1948, between Alabama and Vanderbilt.

I've found the only way to survive the square after tailgating all day at my age is to immediately take 2-3 shots when I get out there. Nephew's has $2 you call-its until like midnight or something before anyone is in there. If I try to just go to the square and drink beer at a normal pace I just end up with a night hangover and want to go home.

If the Cajuns can win the next three, which will be extremely difficult, the Wednesday night matchup against App St may bring a great midweek crowd.

+2 This description right here is Georgia Barbecue. We also add sweet cornbread with butter as a side with the Brunswick stew.

Texas BBQ destroys everything. After Texas, Kansas City is king, followed by Memphis. Charleston is quickly becoming a BBQ Mecca.

I like it all. I make brisket and pork butts without discrimination. My wife is from the Texas/Mexico border near McAllen and Brownsville. So we jokingly fight about whether pork or beef is real BBQ. But I just like good BBQ regardless of it being Texas brisket with charro beans from South Texas, Pulled Pork and slow cooked baked beans from Central Georgia or a whole pig in a "Caja China" or in the ground in South Florida. What I have found is there are good and bad places everywhere. And Georgia and even Atlanta has some real good places. Making me hungry. I wonder if I can make it to Old Hickory House in Tucker for breakfast?

I agree with Panama. I like and dislike all types of bbq, no matter the geographical location.

Every trip to Miami involves not eating much for a week and planning my naps.
