RE: Is it time to ban vaping?
I am amused when I see those who clutch their pearls over vaping (usually while talking about it being bad to consume a recreational drug and repeating over-hyped medical claims not supported by the data). I always wonder how many of them are doing this before or even during having a hot cup of coffee or an iced tea or a Coke, oblivious to their own hypocrisy while feeling morally superior and self-righteous.

If you're going to ban a substance it needs to be beyond redemption. Beyond that teach people some responsibility and discipline. It's harder to solve problems using the bottom up approach, but if you do it tends to solve a wealth of other problems too along the way.

RE: Is it time to ban vaping?
Quote:The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that the number of possible cases of severe respiratory illnesses among people who vaped nicotine or cannabis-related products has more than doubled, to 450 in 33 states.

"Although more investigation is needed to determine the vaping agent or agents responsible, there is clearly an epidemic that begs for an urgent response," David Christiani of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health writes in an editorial published Friday in The New England Journal of Medicine.

In a media briefing Friday, the CDC suggested people should avoid using e-cigarettes.

"While this investigation is ongoing, people should consider not using e-cigarette products," says Dr. Dana Meaney-Delman, incident manager of the CDC's response to the vaping-related lung injuries. "People who do use e-cigarette products should monitor themselves for symptoms, for example, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea and vomiting — and promptly seek medical attention for any health concerns."

Late last month, the CDC said the number of reported vaping-related cases stood at 215. Three people have died — in Illinois, Oregon and Indiana — and a fourth death is under investigation, according to the CDC.

Quote:Minnesota health officials on Friday confirmed the first vaping-related death in the state, bringing the total number of such deaths nationwide to four.

Minnesota State Epidemiologist Dr. Ruth Lynfield said the patient, who was over 65 years old and died in August, was hospitalized with a severe lung injury that was associated with vaping products containing illicit THC, a compound found in marijuana.

“Our sympathies go out to the family of the person who died,” Gov. Tim Walz (D) said in a statement. “This tragedy and the serious injuries suffered by others show the stakes of this outbreak. Health officials are working hard to determine a cause and share information to prevent additional injuries.”

“One death from this outbreak is one death too many,” added Minnesota Commissioner of Health Jan Malcolm. “We are working with our partners around the state and the nation to find out everything we can as quickly as we can to prevent additional illnesses and deaths.”

The state's Department of Health said it currently has 17 confirmed or classified cases as well as 15 potential cases with lung injuries. Of those who have been interviewed, all reported vaping illicit THC products, while many also said they vaped other products, including those that contain nicotine.

Nope.

People need to start taking responsibility for their own actions. If you are over 18 and you want to vape, smoke, drink, do drugs, skinny dip, ride without a helmet, drive without a seat belt, play russian roulette etc... then have have at it as along as you don't bother anyone else.

This.

Ban banning ****. People should be free to be as dangerous to their own bodies as they choose.

I quit smoking weed after 20 + years of it because I had become so detached after - surprise - the cartridges came into my life. With thc content of over 90% it was no wonder I couldn't function anymore.

I still eat mushrooms fairly regularly and I will till I die. I don't go anywhere when I do and hang out in the backyard. No threat to anyone. I'll also take DMT or Ayahuasca if given the opportunity. Again, only when in a safe place.

Freedom is a beautiful thing and should be protected at all costs when it doesn't infringe on anyone else.

To play devil's advocate, the demographics of your typical tobacco users are lower income people. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/...story.html

NFW do they have the means to take care of their own medical bills WHEN they need extra medical care to deal with the side effects of nicotine use. The way our system is set up today, we are ultimately on the hook for their poor decisions. That's an infringement on one of our inalienable rights - property - IMHO. Considering that the money the various levels of government have is due to the consent of the governed - they are holding that money in trust for us and spending it in ways to maximize our benefits. Paying the healthcare costs for those who make stupid decisions is ultimately money taken out of our pockets. The same thing goes for those who abuse food, alcohol or any other vice.
Show me evidence that they cost more to the system over a lifetime...

Most people don't die peacefully in their sleep. Most people end up costing the system a schitload of money, be it when they are 60 or 90. Doesn't matter. I have never seen evidence smokers cost more. It is an empty claim.

When we're talking about a low income person who abuses tobacco... Where do you think the money comes from to pay for his/her medical bills? It's not coming from his/her own savings.
What about the low/no income guy that lives until he is 90 tobacco free? You think 10 years in a nursing home is cheaper than a massive heart attack?

But isnt a pod enough to be like smoking many packs of cigarettes? Mach was confusing the "pod" with one fill of the vape pipe.

So if someone was a pack a day smoker they are getting 3/5 to 4/5 less nicotine if the pod on avg last 3 to 5 days

About 8 months ago I talked my son into going back to the nasty pouches that he puts in his mouth and stop vaping. I hate it but the tobacco we know about.

Quote:3-5 days
Most refillable pods last 3-5 days, although that approximation depends on how often you vape. An important aspect is knowing the signs of needing to refill your pod. Two warning signs that you need to change your pod is a reduction in flavor and a reduction in vapor emitted from your pod.Dec 22, 2017

Quote: One JUUL pod contains 20 cigarettes worth of nicotine.
The amount of nicotine in one standard JUUL cartridge is roughly equal to the amount of nicotine in a pack of cigarettes, or about 200 puffs

So mouth cancer instead of lung cancer.
Probably neither. Chances are about 3% for tobacco users and .5% of non users. Heart disease is the bigger risk.

nicotine is the addictive agent that introduces all the other chems....it's the carcinogens that kills cells or opens up the cancer gene...

where's Mach and his Juul cods when you need him...NYSE:MO - Altria bought them out some time ago...down ~15% over the past 6 mos.....sweet dividend though with a marginal PE....

they're now packaging thc levels and chemicals that I wouldn't consider vaping in any version of sanity....much less any version that is nicotine based...

disclaimer: 420 is only 1.2 hrs. away...is quite safe, non-addictive, and healthy for the belly and mind if you know the 'source'...

blame the stupid and propaganda for what you are now seeing on the streets....

I saw MS garnered enough signatures to put medical marijuana on the ballot next year. Good to hear.

we actually tried to get get a much better version on the ballot before that a couple of years ago....

the 'sip always seems to be late to the dance...

I posted about this back then....I'm crying to legally grow my own and allow our farmers to get back into the hemp industry waiting to boom again...

here's a linky if one cares to review....

100's of thousands of deaths annually due to tobacco..and it is still legal. Think about that for a second.

I'd vote for "gender reveal parties" as the douchiest thing in the past 10 years.

Adding to the douchiness: they're invented by the same generation that says gender is a social construct.

How is that determined? Kind of like the drunk guy that was rear ended while sitting at a red light. Goes in the stats as "alcohol related", but the alcohol had nothing to do with the cause. Also why nobody believes anything the government of special interest organizations puts out. Tobacco is definitely bad for you, but smoking a cigarette isn't going to kill you. Chronic, long-term use may hasten your death a bit and you might drop dead of a heart attack at 60, but if it wasn't the cigarettes, who is to say it wouldn't be something else? Or who is to say that someone that gets a heart attack at 60 wouldn't have gotten on anyway even s/he didn't smoke. Lung cancer is pretty unique to smoking and affects about 3%. If you want to attribute those deaths to smoking, I'll give it to you, but it isn't hundreds of thousands per year. If you want to blame the cigarettes on every death of someone that happens to be a smoker, well, that's why nobody believes it and it is still legal.
